Edinburgh alcohol shop granted permission to fit seating area after 14-month battle
The Leith Bottle Shop has been granted permission to fit a seating area in their premises.
The Licensing Board granted a license following a 14-month battle which saw the owners of the shop sit in front of the board on three occasions.
Thirsty Leithers will be able to get a cold pint at a -pop-up' in a few weeks with the owners also planning on installing a cellar in early 2026.

Leith Bottle Shop offers a range of locally sourced and unique products including craft beer which is produced in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Alex Harriss, owner of Leith Bottle Shop said: 'We're thrilled to have finally been given the go ahead to allow our customers to sit in for a drink as well as offering takeaway. Leith has a fantastic range of craft beer on offer, and we hope we can play just a small part in helping make Leith the place to go for beer lovers in Scotland.

Leith Bottle Shop opened at 30 Great Junction Street in May 2022 and sells over 450 different craft beers, wines and local spirits, with a continually rotating range.
Leith has the densest concentration of breweries of anywhere in Scotland with nationally renowned breweries including Newbarns, Pilot and Campervan.

An Edinburgh coffee caravan has been forced to close after 'irreconcilable differences'. Isle Coffee, who operated in Joppa, made the announcement with 'great sadness'. We hope in the future to find a workable solution and that we may be able to return to our new home. We are devastated to have caused so much consternation, it was never our intention to bring anything other than good vibes and great coffee when we moved to Joppa. "We have loved meeting so many wonderful, friendly and joyful locals - it is a truly fantastic place to live and we have been made feel so welcome by so many people, we just hope we can sort things out and come back to Joppa." Edinburgh home owner fumes after 'party Airbnb' reappears on platform
Edinburgh residents say they feel furious after noticing a previously suspended Airbnb return to the platform. Located in Faulburn, the flat is the only known short term let (STL) in the block, with neighbours complaining of problem parties and loud guests wreaking havoc on their peaceful suburban lives. Edinburgh Live spoke to business owner Fraser Ramsay in February 2025 after a late night party saw youths falling around the street, acting aggressively with one another and consuming alcohol at the Airbnb property. Following the report by Live and complaints from residents, the property was suspended from the Airbnb site for 30 days. But locals were enraged when they discovered the flat had been listed on for several months before it reappeared on Airbnb in May 2025 when its suspension ended. 'I had to go down there as there last night (Tuesday May 27) is a man staying in the flat and I could not sleep from the noise,' Fraser said. 'I told him to keep the noise down or I would phone the police and he agreed to do so but then I heard him through the night again. 'It ruins your next day, I'm a business owner, and going out to working not having a good sleep isn't great. The owner of this Airbnb needs to sell up to someone who will live here long term or rent out the flat to a proper resident. 'At least if it is a permanent neighbour in the block we will be able to build relationships and have common courtesy. At the moment there is a security issue as well because these are strangers. 'People are going at all hours of the night and there is no real soundproofing despite the owner making modifications. It is ridiculous. He cannot get away with this. 'End of the day it is important this comes to an end. When it all kicks off it is horrible.' Fraser has been in regular contact with Edinburgh Council to try to get answers as to how the owner was able to re-list the property for short term rentals on Airbnb. Correspondence between the home owner and the council stated a notice had been given to the STL landlord ordering them to cease operating the Airbnb unless they are able to lodge an appeal by late June 2025. It is understood Airbnb suspended the property originally due to a party taking place at the property which is a breach of the platforms rules. However the property owner is understood to have carried out 'sound proofing' alterations to the property, which led to the ban being lifted. Airbnb protocol states the company will potentially deactivate a property if they are contacted by a relevant local authority which believes the listing is operating illegally. It is understood the council have not made contact with Airbnb regarding the above property. The property owner has until 25 June 2025 to appeal the notice. 'If he fails to do so by this date, then he would require to comply with its requirements i.e. cease the use of the property as a short term let by 25 July 2025.' Councillor Joan Griffiths Planning Convener said: 'We have issued an enforcement notice requesting that the owner of this property ceases to use it as a short term let. They have until 24 July 2025 to comply with this notice unless they appeal.' An Airbnb spokesperson said: 'We take feedback from local residents seriously, and this listing was temporarily suspended in line with our policies and the host has since taken steps to address this issue. Parties are banned on Airbnb and we may remove this listing if further policy violations occur. "While issues on Airbnb are exceptionally rare, residents can contact us 24/7 via our neighbourhood support line and we investigate all reports received through this channel.'

Edinburgh Hibs fans hail Sir Tom Farmer a 'hero' as they say final farewell
Edinburgh locals have shared moving stories and memories of Edinburgh philanthropist and Hibs icon Sir Tom Farmer Hundreds gathered to pay their respects on Wednesday afternoon at Easter Road stadium as Sir Tom's coffin was driven by around 12.45pm. He passed away on May 9 at the age of 84, and many Hibs fans and locals have been left saddened by his death. Described as a 'true gentleman' and a 'hero', Sir Tom owned a majority stake in Hibs for 28 years. Speaking to Edinburgh Live at Easter Road, Lorraine Meedham, 62, said: "We are here for everything he did for the fans. "Back in the 90s, Tom really stepped in and saved Hibs. We are also here because of everything he has done for charity. He is a really good man and we wanted to show our respects." Alan and William Budge are lifelong Hibs fans and were also in attendance on Wednesday afternoon. Alan, 60, said: "He saved the club. We needed to be here just for the fact he is an incredible man who rescued Hibs." Stuart Graham, 55, who said he will "die a Hibs fan" added: "It's all because of Tom that Hibs are still alive. If it wasn't for him coming in when he did, the club wouldn't be where it is today. "I have been a Hibs supporter all my life - born a Hibs fan and I will die a Hibs fan - it was extremely important for me to be there for him today." Theresa Ferguson, 67, teared up as she described the Edinburgh icon. She said: "Tommy was a hero. My uncle worked for him when he had Kwik Fit - he was a family man and a true gentleman. "We are so sad to have lost him and it was devastating to find out he had passed." Nicky Ferguson, 37, added: "I have been a Hibs fan for 37 years. "The turnout shows how much he was loved and the difference he made for the fans. He did so much for the club, if it wasn't for him, the club would not be here." His hearse was driven past Hibernian FC's Stadium and it's understood a memorial service will be held for Sir Tom later in the year to commemorate his contribution to civic and public life throughout the country and beyond. Details are yet to be confirmed. Sir Tom, a former director of MyTravel Group and ScottishPower, was hailed by Scotland's First Minister John Swinney as a "generous individual to so many causes in Scotland". According to the Sunday Times Rich List from 2020, he was worth an estimated £126million. He grew Kwik Fit to become an international chain before selling it to Ford for £1 billion in 1999. His business career is well documented, as was his commitment to philanthropy, his many public roles and his unwavering support and appreciation for the communities and people that he lived his life within. "More than anything Sir Tom was a family man. Born in Leith, Edinburgh, in 1940 he was the youngest of seven children. He frequently spoke of the love, care and attention that was bestowed upon him by being the youngest in such a large family. "Leith provided a wonderfully supportive environment for him growing up as a child and he retained a lifelong affection and connection to the area. Along with his three sisters and three brothers, the siblings formed strong bonds from a young age that they continued to enjoy and cherish throughout their lives. "Sir Tom had many nieces and nephews to whom he was proud to be an Uncle to them and their families. In 1966 Sir Tom married his dearly beloved wife, Anne. "They met at their local church, St Mary, Star of the Sea, and were married for 57 years up until her death in 2023. In later years, when asked about the secret to his success he would often say it was because he 'married a girl like Anne'. "They lived their whole married life in Edinburgh and are survived by their two children and four grandchildren. Sir Tom's Roman Catholic faith was present throughout all areas of his life. "He attended mass weekly in Edinburgh and enjoyed the friendship and company of many people with the Catholic community both here in Scotland and further afield. Sir Tom will be remembered by many for his deep commitment to his family, his work and his faith and for being at all times a proud Scotsman."
