Matheus Cunha responds to 'what people don't understand' about Man Utd transfer
Manchester United unveiled their £62.5million new boy Matheus Cunha on Thursday following his big-money move from Wolves, and the Brazil international is determined to change the club's fortunes
Matheus Cunha is delighted to have joined his 'dream team' - insisting there is "no-one else like United." The Brazil international is determined to help Manchester United bounce back from their worst season in 51 years.
The 20-time English champions are in the midst of a rebuild under Ruben Amorim, having limped home 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to fellow strugglers Tottenham. The defeat in Bilbao cost them Champions League qualification, meaning United will spend a first season without European football since 2014-15.
But the Red Devils' issues did not deter Brazil international Cunha, who completed his eagerly-anticipated £62.5million switch from Wolves on Thursday.
'It is the most common phrase that you can say at this moment, but this is the dream come true,' he told MUTV. 'Maybe outside, I think maybe my decision, they don't understand. But when you have always dreamed to play here, it's easier to pick this decision.
'For me, no-one else is like United. Of course, I know it's been a hard season for everyone. I think my decision shows what this club is for me and what I believe this club can be.
'And, of course, I'll do everything that I can to manage this inside of me, to play for my dream team and put my dream team to win.'
Cunha loved United growing up and spoke of his admiration for Wayne Rooney, along with many other members of the triumphant 2008 Champions League side. The Red Devils are a long way from even qualifying for that competition right now, yet the forward has lofty ambitions.
'I don't think we have one player who comes here and then doesn't think about the glory days in Man United,' Cunha said. 'To remember all the times that they win the Premier League, how many titles it was, and of course to qualify for the Champions League. This is what I think about United, you know to put this club on top.
'Then what I can do is everything to show them I'm here to help the team, to conquer these kind of things.'
Cunha is the first of Amorim's summer recruits and the Brazilian, who has signed a deal until 2030 with the option of another year, is excited to work under the United head coach.
'I really believe in him, everything that he did in Portugal,' he said. 'I hope he can conquer the world like he did in Portugal.
'But of course I think he needs the players that can do everything like I'm open to do and help the team, help him. All the conversation that we have had made my decision easier.'

Man City ready to accept defeat weeks after transfer listing Jack Grealish
Jack Grealish's Manchester City future remains unclear as he and the club look for a resolution with loan and permanent exits on the table for the £100million man Manchester City are prepared to loan out Jack Grealish if no permanent home can be found for the out-of-favour playmaker. The ex-Aston Villa star is tipped to seek pastures new this summer after falling down the pecking order. Grealish cost City £100million back in 2021 and they had been looking to recoup around half of that fee. The 29-year-old has not been included in the squad that headed to the United States for the Club World Cup, furthering underlining his decline. Those at the Etihad have been looking to land £50m to part ways with Grealish, who is earning £300,000-a-week. However if no buyers come forward then those on the blue half of Manchester will consider a loan, reports the Guardian, where they may have to foot some of his salary. There has been reported interest from Premier League clubs and those abroad. Newcastle were linked as a possible destination whilst Antonio Conte is keen on taking Grealish to Napoli, who have just claimed the Italian title. Grealish only scored three times last year with the majority of his appearances coming off the bench. He's only scored 17 times across his four seasons in Manchester with the club set for wholesale changes. Guardiola gave a passionate response after leaving out Grealish for the Fulham game on the final day. He said he was the person who "fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season and the next season". The Catalan however acknowledged that Grealish, who has two years remaining on his contract, will not be happy about his lack of minutes. He said: 'It's not [only] Jack. There is not one player in my locker room, and I think all the locker rooms around the world, that is happy [when they] do not play. "When the team is winning and winning they have to figure out how everything happens – but they are not happy. They are here to play and, when they don't play, they are not satisfied. That is the normal position in all the clubs.' City have invested more than £100m already this summer as they undergo something of a rebuild - which may further hamper Grealish's game time. They've landed Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, Wolves left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri and the winger Rayan Cherki from Lyon.

Man Utd make transfer decision on Victor Osimhen after Viktor Gyokeres blow
Manchester United are given strong consideration to a move for Victor Osimhen with Arsenal taking the lead in the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres. Both United and Arsenal are desperate to sign a new centre forward this summer with Sporting CP star Gyokeres a top target for both clubs. A bitter row between Sporting and the Sweden international has broken out this week, with the player and his representatives convinced the club have broken promises over the fee he will be sold for his summer. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with Sporting officials to discuss a deal this week with an initial approach worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons rejected. An improved offer is expected. While United are still in the picture, Gyokeres' preference is to join the Gunners where Champions League football will be on offer next season. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Ruben Amorim's side have already missed out on their top striker target with Liam Delap opting for a move to Chelsea – with United's lack of European football next season again a huge factor. With Arsenal leading the race for Gyokeres, United could now reignite their interest in Osimhen, The Sun report. Osimhen is set to return to Napoli after a loan spell in Turkey with Galatasaray where he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances. Talks to join Saudi side Al-Hilal broke down last week with Galatasaray hoping to keep hold of the Nigeria international who would still be keen on a move to the Premier League. Reports in France meanwhile talks have restarted between Osimhen and United. A salary of €12million-a-year has been discussed, according to Foot Mercato, with his parent club Napoli hoping to secure a fee of €75million. But United's failure to win the Europa League could again come back to haunt them. Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel, Osimhen's countryman who was involved in negotiations to take him to Stamford Bridge last summer, suggests while the striker could consider a move to Old Trafford, playing in the Champions League is a top priority. 'I think so,' Mikel told Metro when asked if a lack of European football could derail United's chances of signing Osimhen. 'As the top striker and player I know he is, yes I think that would be a factor. 'Maybe he would say, 'I will give it a season.' Knowing he is in the squad with a few other signings that Ruben Amorim gets in, the players he wants, it is something Victor might consider. Maybe he would think about sacrificing a season. 'We have to wait and see. But I think we want to see him in the Champions League.'
