Ruben Amorim delivers verdict on Cunha's Man United debut
Manchester United commenced their pre-season with a goalless draw against Leeds in Stockholm. New signing Matheus Cunha made his debut, with coach Ruben Amorim noting his aggressive play as a key attribute the team requires. Amorim acknowledged the connection between the Brazilian and Bruno Fernandes. Eighteen-year-old left wing-back Diego Leon also featured for the first time, with Amorim praising his potential despite his recent arrival. The squad is preparing for a pre-season tour of the United States, where they will face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton, which Amorim believes is vital for team bonding and development.

Amad Diallo insists Man United fans will need to be 'patient' this season and reveals expectation for Red Devils - as he looks forward to playing alongside £70m Bryan Mbeumo
Amad Diallo insists that Manchester United fans will need to be 'patient' this season but that he expects United to compete for silverware in the upcoming campaign. 'I think they have to be patient with us,' said Amad. 'There's a new manager, with new players and new tactics. We know last season wasn't really good for the team, but I think this season we will win a lot with him (Ruben Amorim) and I hope this season that we are going to achieve a lot of good things by the end of the season,' the 23-year-old added. Pressed on what would be a good season, Amad insisted that qualification for the Champions League would be a success for United. 'A good season will be top five. I hope we can achieve top five at the end of the season,' he said. Matheus Cunha made his debut for United in a pre-season friendly against Leeds on Saturday, after making a £62.5m move from Wolves while Bryan Mbeumo is also set to join Amorim's side after a deal with Brentford was agreed, worth in excess of £70m. Asked about Cunha, Amad said: 'He's a good player - we need good players in the team and he'll bring a lot to the team. I hope he can give us some different things. Especially last season, we missed a lot of good players in the final third. He (Cunha) scored a lot of goals last season, so I just wish him all the best.' On Mbeumo, Amad added: 'Of course I'm looking forward to playing with him. We need good players in the team who can bring something to the final third. We are really excited to have them in the team and I hope that together we can give something to the fans at the end of the season because they deserve it.' Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is in talks with Barcelona over a potential loan move but Amad refused to discuss the situation. 'The only thing I can say is good luck to him, but I'm more focused on United and my team,' the Ivorian said. Alejandro Garnacho, another one of Amad's teammates, is also heading out of Old Trafford with Amorim insisting that the 21-year-old is not part of his plans. 'I think this is not really my problem,' said Amad, when asked about Garnacho. 'The only thing I'm thinking right now is how we will learn together as a team.' United will now head to America for three games as part of the Premier League Summer Series.

New-look Man United struggle for pace in goalless draw with Leeds, Amorim calls for improvement
LONDON, July 20 — Manchester United have plenty to improve on and need more pace in their midfield, manager Ruben Amorim said after the Premier League side began their pre-season preparations with a goalless draw against Leeds United. United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and also failed to qualify for the Champions League as they lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. The Old Trafford side failed to impress in the draw with newly promoted Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, despite the inclusion of new signing Matheus Cunha in the starting lineup. 'We suffered a little bit when we tried to press high, they kick the ball, win the second ball and they were a danger in that moment,' Amorim told MUTV. 'We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel it, (so) that's hard to bring the ball (forward). But we created chances. We have a lot to do but it was a first test against a Premier League team, with two different teams, so it was a good test… 'As a group, we have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all the details, so, yeah, we are going to improve.' United next play West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 26. — Reuters
