‘Megaflash' lightning bolt traveled over 500 miles, setting a new record, study says

Lightning is a familiar sight in stormy skies, but a new report has revealed just how far some bolts can travel — in one case, more than 500 miles.
That astonishing bolt sparked to life in eastern Texas and stretched all the way to Kansas City, Missouri, traveling 515 miles in seconds. It struck during a thunderstorm in October 2017, but the bolt's exact distance was finally verified in the study, published Thursday in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.
'We call it megaflash lightning and we're just now figuring out the mechanics of how and why it occurs,' said Randy Cerveny, one of the study's authors and a professor of geographical sciences at Arizona State University.
Researchers discovered the record-breaking megaflash while re-evaluating satellite data with new computational methods. The data from the satellites also provided much greater detail than previous observations, letting scientists determine individual megaflashes in these past storms.
'Flashes at this extreme scale always existed, and are now becoming identifiable as our detection capabilities and data processing methods improve,' the paper says.
It's helping scientists and forecasters better understand what lightning is capable of and the dangers it poses.
All lightning is an electric discharge — much like a static shock, just on a larger scale.
Inside a thunderstorm, ice and water particles collide and exchange electrons, creating a buildup of electric charge. Lightning occurs when that charge becomes too strong for the atmosphere to hold onto and discharges it in the form of a bolt either through the cloud or down to the ground.
Most lightning stays within 10 miles of the storm where it originated. When it travels more than 60 miles, it's considered a megaflash.
Michael Peterson, the report's lead author and a senior scientist at Georgia Institute of Technology's Severe Storms Research Center, said megaflashes tend to form in the weaker, outer parts of a storm system — not the intense core most people associate with lightning — and often after the storm has moved on.
The record-breaking 2017 flash followed that same pattern, creeping through the broad cloud layers that trailed a cold front across the southern Plains. Flat, sheet-like clouds stretching from Texas to Kansas City formed a shallow layer that could easily conduct electricity — creating ideal conditions for lightning to travel horizontally for hundreds of miles.
As the megaflash travels through the clouds, it can shoot off multiple ground-striking bolts. 'You might have an entire thunderstorm's worth of lightning, cloud to ground strokes, in one flash,' Peterson noted.
Megaflashes are rare: Fewer than 1% of thunderstorms produce them, according to satellite data analyzed by Peterson in the study. The storms that do are also generally long-lived and massive, covering thousands of square miles.
That expansiveness is key, Peterson said, and is likely 'the primary driver' of megaflashes, as smaller storms can't support as much horizontal travel.
'But the thing is that we don't actually know exactly what sets of conditions actually allow these flashes to occur at these scales,' Peterson added.
The 2017 megaflash may be the longest ever verified, now beating out a bolt of 477 miles in April 2020, but scientists don't expect it to hold that title for long.
'Oh, we'll find more,' Cerveny said. 'We are still in the process of evaluating data.'
The satellite-based lightning mappers that made this discovery possible have only been operation for about 10 years — a short window in climate science terms — and there's a lot more data to analyze.
The tools used to track extreme events like the Texas-to-Missouri bolt are opening new frontiers in lightning research, said Chris Vagasky, a meteorologist with the National Lightning Safety Council who was not involved in the study.
'What I'm looking forward to is seeing how does the location of where lightning occurs change?' Vagasky said. 'It is going to be really useful from having all of these datasets, ground-based or satellite- based, to help us really understand what is going on with lightning and thunderstorms.'
While megaflashes are rare, their risks are very real.
Peterson said they represent a kind of worst-case lightning scenario: Powerful discharges capable of sparking wildfires or causing damage far from a storm's core.
'You don't see where they come from. You only see where they strike,' Peterson said. 'The extent of the hazard and then the fact that it's unexpected both contribute to why it's important to understand for public safety.'
Many lightning injuries happen because people underestimate how far a bolt can actually travel from a storm and how long the danger can linger.
Cerveny, too, emphasized the importance of correcting the misconception that lightning can strike 'out of the blue.'
'These megaflashes really point out one of the severe problems that is associated with thunderstorms,' said Cerveny. 'A lightning flash can start in a thunderstorm very far away, and travel, as we've just shown, 500 miles before it ends.'

The team has established the apple snail as a new research organism for investigating eye regeneration, which may hold the key for restoring vision due to damage and disease. KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Snails are slimy, simple creatures yet one species, the apple snail, has an unordinary feature with an extraordinary capability. The eye of the apple snail is unusually similar to a human eye—but, unlike human eyes, it can regrow itself if injured or even amputated. New research from the Stowers Institute for Medical Research has established the apple snail as a novel research organism to study eye regeneration, paving the way for how humans may one day be able to do the same. The study, from the lab of Stowers President and Chief Scientific Officer Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D., published in Nature Communications on August 6, 2025, describes a new system to study sensory organ regeneration in the apple snail, Pomacea canaliciulata. Led by former Stowers Postdoctoral Research Associate Alice Accorsi, Ph.D., now an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Davis, the research team discovered that the apple snail has complex camera-type eyes like humans and developed tools to alter its genome, resulting in snails with stable gene variations that can help researchers better understand the process of regeneration. "Our eyes are extremely important for perceiving our environment, yet when damaged are unable to recover," said Accorsi. "Essentially we had no way to identify solutions for treating conditions like retinal degeneration or physical injury to the human eye," added Sánchez Alvarado. "But nature has answers for us. We now have a tractable system for investigating which genes are responsible for camera-type eye regeneration." The process of apple snail eye regeneration from amputation to full restoration occurs in four stages over 28 days: wound healing, formation of a special cell mass, emergence of a lens and retina, and the maturation of all eye components. Because vertebrates including humans can only perform the first stage, wound healing, the researchers are looking at where regeneration and development diverge and are trying to identify what switch snails use to reactivate new eye development. Apple snails have eyes that are anatomically similar to vertebrate eyes, including those in humans, with a lens, cornea, and retina. The researchers identified that a gene called pax6—known to play a crucial role in vertebrate and fruit fly eye development—is also present in apple snails. "A key gene governing eye development in vertebrates is pax6, and we showed for the first time that apple snails not only have pax6 but also that this gene is critical for their eyes to develop," said Accorsi. In the lab, the team optimized the gene-editing technique CRISPR-Cas9 for apple snails that allowed them to disrupt pax6 gene function. The new line of snails was healthy yet noticeably missing their eyes. "There were two big moments where I felt this was something that could be important for the entire scientific community," said Accorsi. "The first was discovering that the snail eye was just like a human eye. The second was observing these tiny embryos without eyes after disrupting pax6, and realizing we can use snails as a system for understanding gene function." "To have a research system that regenerates eyes, combined with the ability to do genetics in that system is among the first efforts in the history of science to gain a mechanistic understanding of the processes that underpin the restoration of a sensory organ as complex as the eye—from injury all the way to its regeneration," said Sánchez Alvarado. For each stage of eye regeneration, the team collected and analyzed gene activity. This information about the timing of gene expression can be used to narrow down which genes are likely most promising for eye regeneration. "We now have a list of candidate genes," said Accorsi. "Going forward, we plan to disrupt these genes to test if they are required for regeneration and development of the eye." "With a little bit of effort, a little bit of ingenuity, and a great deal of persistence, biology that seemed inaccessible is no longer a pipe dream," said Sánchez Alvarado. "Our work with the apple snails is proof positive—it really is possible to bring something that was far beyond what we thought we could do into the realm of real possibility to advance biological knowledge." "It was a big risk," said Sánchez Alvarado. "But it worked." Move over, baseball. Like it or not, "scrolling" has become the nation's pre-eminent pastime. "Yeah, it's super tough," said Carly Decker in Dallas. "I'm personally glued to my phone because of various jobs, and all require I be on call at all hours. So, it is tough to find a balance." Texas lawmakers aim to reduce classroom distractions with a new law banning cellphones, tablets, and smartwatches during the school day. "I'm in agreeance with it," said Stephanie Paresky. "I think that they should not be in the classroom. They need to be focused on learning and not all the distractions." Paresky says her elementary school-aged child is still too young for a cellphone, and they are holding the devices at bay for as long as they can. Limited screen time is the norm for her family, but a glance around most public spaces shows that attitude is rare. "Four people can be having dinner... like out at a nice restaurant," said Josh Briley, Ph.D., a team lead psychologist at Parkland Health, "and all of them are on their phones. None of them are mindful, none of them are present in the moment." The anxiety associated with being without those devices has its name: nomophobia. Briley says it's not an official medical diagnosis, but he's warning parents and educators of the school day consequences of the ban. "There's going to be short-term implications with anxiety, depression, irritability, anger," said Briley, Ph.D., CCTP, FAIS. "Due to technological advances, we have become, as a society, very dependent upon our devices." Briley says parents will have a big impact on how well their students adjust to the change. "If the parents do nothing but complain about it and talk about the downside, then the student is going to be more resistant." He urges parents to lead by example—putting down their own devices. Begin to schedule "technology-free" time at home and during short car rides. And he says, don't forget to acknowledge the positives. "They will be less distracted in class, so they will be paying more attention," Briley said. "Their social skills will improve. They'll learn to talk to each other face to face, and have conversations that don't involve texting each other." Briley also reminds parents to acknowledge their own anxiety about not being able to reach students during the school day. He suggests reaching out to school administrators beforehand to learn about emergency contact protocols. "We miss so much in our children's lives when our noses are buried in our phones," shares Briley. "I'm not saying, 'don't ever use your phone'... but this is a good time for families to evaluate."

NASA has selected a yet-to-be-named Space Shuttle to move to Houston, conceding to a long-running bid by Texas senators to house one of the iconic vehicles. If the chosen vehicle is Discovery—which it likely is—the Smithsonian, which houses the vehicle, may put up a fight. The Trump administration included the shuttle's relocation in the budget reconciliation bill, signed it into law on July 4, and set aside $85 million for the move and construction of a new facility in Houston. At the time, Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn had their eyes on Space Shuttle Discovery, which has been on display at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum in Virginia since 2012. This week, a NASA spokesperson stated that the agency's acting administrator, Sean Duffy, has identified one of the retired shuttles to be displayed at Space Center Houston, without revealing which one, according to collectSPACE. It's not clear why the identity of the shuttle is being withheld or if NASA has received the Smithsonian's approval to relocate Discovery. 'There is no better place for one of NASA's space shuttles to be displayed than Space City, and I thank Acting Administrator Duffy for rectifying the Obama Administration's error and look forward to welcoming this iconic orbiter to its rightful home,' Cornyn wrote in a statement. Cruz and Cornyn first introduced the Discovery Relocation Act in April, calling on NASA and the Smithsonian to develop a plan to relocate Discovery. It provided no less than $5 million to move the Shuttle to its new home, with the remaining $80 million allocated for the construction of a new display facility at Space Center Houston. The Smithsonian, on the other hand, argues it would cost somewhere between $300 and $400 million to move the massive spacecraft across the country. It's also worried that the shuttle may be damaged during the journey to Texas. For Discovery to be relocated, NASA does require the Smithsonian's blessing, since the institution acquired the shuttle from the agency and is now considered its owner. In response to the senators' bid to relocate Discovery, the Smithsonian reasserted its ownership of the shuttle in a statement that read, 'NASA transferred 'all rights, title, interest and ownership' of the shuttle to the Smithsonian.' The shuttle is 'part of the National Air and Space Museum's mission and core function as a research facility and the repository of the national air and space collection,' according to the statement. Three other Shuttles are also on display in different parts of the country: Enterprise is at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York; Atlantis is at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida; and Endeavour is currently being set up for display at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center in Los Angeles. Given the state's longstanding history with the shuttle program, Texas understandably feels left out. The city of Houston in particular. While all of the Space Shuttle launches took place from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, more than 100 missions were managed from the control room at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. After the Shuttle program ended in 2011, NASA selected museums across the country to display its iconic spacecraft. The agency's process has been highly criticized, particularly by Texas lawmakers, who referred to it as the 'Houston Shuttle Snub.' Fourteen years later, Texans are still gunning for that shuttle. The bill doesn't specify which of the retired vehicles would move to Space Center Houston, only that it has flown to space and carried astronauts to orbit (i.e. it's a real shuttle and not some mockup). Although NASA is still in possession of Atlantis, the focus seems to be on Discovery. 'We continue to work on the basis that the shuttle identified is Discovery and proceed with our preparations for its arrival and providing it a world-class home,' Keesha Bullock, chief communications and marketing officer at Space Center Houston, said in a statement, according to collectSPACE. Whether the Smithsonian will give up its shuttle is still up for debate.
