ICE deports former Mexico governor serving federal prison sentence in Illinois
A former governor and presidential candidate in Mexico serving a federal prison sentence in the U.S. for money laundering was deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this week.
Tomas Jesus Yarrington Ruvalcaba, 68, was removed by ICE on Wednesday and turned over to Mexican authorities, whom he was wanted by, the agency announced on Friday.
Yarrington was the governor of Tamaulipas, Mexico, from 1999 to 2005, and ran as a presidential candidate for Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party in 2005.

Before he was transferred to ICE custody last summer, he was serving a 108-month sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution Thomson in Illinois after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in 2021.
Yarrington was moved from the Illinois prison to continue immigration hearings, and on Feb. 27, a judge with the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review ordered his removal. The ex-politician waived his right to appeal.

Mexican authorities were awaiting his arrival at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California to take him into custody for charges he is facing there, which include organized crime and transactions with illegally obtained resources.

Court documents showed that he accepted bribes from individuals and private companies in Mexico during his time as governor of Tamaulipas to do business with the state, ICE said. He used the bribery money to purchase properties in the United States, but used nominee buyers in an attempt to hide his involvement.
"Yarrington laundered his illegally obtained bribe money in the United States by purchasing beachfront condominiums, large estates, commercial developments, airplanes and luxury vehicles," ICE said.
Yarrington was caught traveling in Italy in April 2017 under an assumed name and fake passport. He was taken into custody there on a provisional arrest warrant following a May 2013 indictment for various money laundering and drug-related charges.

Canadian drug trafficker on "Most Wanted List" sentenced in Detroit federal court
A Canadian man who led an eight-year drug trafficking conspiracy in the United States was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. Khaophone Sychantha, 43, was convicted of one count of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, ecstasy, and BZP, one count of possession of methamphetamine, ecstasy, and BZP with intent to distribute, and one count of possession of ecstasy and BZP with intent to distribute. At one point, the press release said, Sychantha was listed on the Homeland Security Investigations' Ten Most Wanted List. Because Sychantha is not a United States citizen, he will be deported back to Canada after serving his sentence. The Homeland Security Investigations team led the case. "This sentencing brings Sychantha's cross border criminal enterprise to a fitting end," Murphy said. "The collective effort by the case agents, the prosecutors and our international partners is astounding, and I commend them all for a job well done." Evidence at trial showed that Sychantha led an organization for about eight years that directed several couriers to transport hundreds of thousands of pills and tens of thousands of dollars in drug proceeds across the United States-Canada border. His couriers — many of whom were caught and convicted themselves — traveled within multiple states. The sentence was issued by Chief United States Judge Sean F. Cox.

Crypto ‘kidnap' mystery deepens as sources say alleged victim's parents ‘received texts' and didn't know anything was wrong
The parents of the man allegedly held captive and tortured by crypto bros in Manhattan got regular updates saying he was OK, The Post has learned. Italian national Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan, 28, was allegedly held from May 6 to 23 in a luxury apartment on Prince Street for by John Woeltz and William Duplessie, who stand charged with tying up Carturan and torturing him for his digital wallet containing an estimated $28m in digital currency, according to cops. No missing person report was filed by Carturan's family, who were shocked when they found out what had happened to him and immediately went to ground. The parents then traveled to New York, where they met with the Italian Consul General in New York. Woeltz was arrested the same day, Duplessie a few days later. Woeltz, dubbed the Crypto King of Kentucky, is said to have a private jet and live a high octane party lifestyle alongside Duplessie. They are both held in custody on charges including kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, assault and weapons possession. At Duplessie's arraignment last week his lawyer claimed the criminal case will 'begin to unravel' as more details come out. 'The facts here are hotly disputed, his involvement is hotly disputed,' attorney Sanford Talkin told the judge during the hearing.

Private prison operator blocked from housing ICE detainees at shuttered facility
A judge in Kansas issued a Wednesday ruling determining that a private prison operator could not use its shuttered facility to house detainees from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Leavenworth County Judge John Bryant granted a temporary restraining order blocking CoreCivic from housing individuals in the custody of ICE. The order was issued after a March lawsuit was thrown out in May on technical grounds, according to the Associated Press. CoreCivic did not immediately reply to The Hill's request for comment on the ruling. Earlier this year, executives applied to use their 1,033-bed facility to help the Trump administration facilitate removals in its crackdown on illegal immigration. CoreCivic said it would lose $4.2 million each month it wasn't open, according to legal files reviewed by AP. The company applied for a permit to use the grounds for ICE operations but withdrew its application in May alleging it didn't need permission from the city to determine which detainees to house. 'It became clear to CoreCivic that there was not a cooperative relationship,' said Taylor Concannon Hausmann, an attorney for the private prison operator, speaking in court, as reported by the AP. However, city attorney Joe Hatley urged the company to 'follow the rules' and obtain the proper permit for operations. The CoreCivic property is located 10 miles away from the Kansas City International Airport and has previously worked with federal officials to house pre-trial detainees, according to the AP. In 2021, the Tennessee-based company stopped working for the U.S. Marshals Service after former President Biden urged the Justice Department to cease contracts with private prison operators. Multiple inmate violations were flagged in addition to reported suicides and killings. The Trump administration has been working with the private sector to undertake deportation efforts, including the GEO Group, which is planning to reopen New Jersey's Delaney Hall to hold individuals awaiting removal. Democrats have protested the use of the facility for federal purposes citing concerns about federal operations within Newark, a designated sanctuary city.
