Vikings two-time Pro Bowler makes admission on Patriots defensive line

USA Today8 hours ago
The New England Patriots' defensive front made a strong impression on Minnesota Vikings' two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Brian O'Neill.
He was complimentary of the unit after seeing them in action during the two joint practice sessions between the Patriots and Vikings last week. Coach Mike Vrabel made it a point to add more firepower along the defensive front in New England.
Milton Williams, Harold Landry III, Khyiris Tonga and K'Lavon Chaisson signed with the team in free agency. They also spent draft picks on defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and edge rusher Bradyn Swinson. Couple those additions with two incredibly talented defenders in Christian Barmore and Keion White and it's clear why the unit is finding success right out of the gate.
'They got some players,' O'Neill said, via Boston Herald's Doug Kyed. 'It was a good test for us to see (Christian) Barmore back out there today. That's obviously going to make a big difference for them. I got a ton of respect for Harold (Landry). I played against him before, and just everything I hear about him is true professional. And then Milton (Williams has) got some juice for sure, too, sure so. And Keion (White) is pretty good, too, off the edge, and he's able to do it from both sides, which not a lot of guys can do. So they play hard. You can tell they're really well coached. It was a really good two days of work for us.'
Historically, defense has been the calling card for the Patriots, and that is not expected to change under Vrabel.
Hearing the early praise should be music to the ears of Patriots fans. There are still some questions at edge rusher, but the defensive line should be one of the strongest units in the league.
It's going to be a fun group to watch under a talented defensive mind in defensive coordinator Terrell Williams.

Bears CB Jaylon Johnson's pregame workout is positive sign for Week 1 return

Chicago Bears superstar cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been missing throughout training camp and preseason due to a leg injury suffered before training camp. But there was reason for optimism ahead of Sunday night's game against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Ben Johnson has reiterated that Johnson is on track to return for the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings, and this most recent update shows a big step in Johnson's recovery. Matt Zahn of CBS Chicago posted a video of Johnson getting a workout in on the field at Soldier Field on Sunday, noting that the cornerback looks much improved from his recent leg injury. Johnson's health will be key for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and defensive backs coach Al Harris, who undoubtedly need their top player healthy when the regular season begins. With Johnson and Kyler Gordon (also injured with a hamstring injury that has him week-to-week) leading the way, the Bears are expected to have one of the most talented and productive secondaries in the NFL. And Johnson, who is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro selection, will look to build on his previous success. Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

Vikings Facing Backlash Over Major JJ McCarthy Decision

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Minnesota Vikings are just weeks away from J.J. McCarthy's first career start, yet there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency in Minnesota. After McCarthy missed his entire rookie season with a meniscus injury, the 22-year-old quarterback is expected to be the team's Week 1 starter in a primetime matchup against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The stage couldn't be brighter for McCarthy, who played a series in the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans. The Athletic's Derrik Klassen took issue with McCarthy's limited workload, questioning his readiness and the Vikings' decision to hold him out of the second preseason game against the New England Patriots. Photo by"Unfortunately, it was not as many reps [in the first preseason game] as I would have liked," Klassen said on an August 15 episode of "The Athletic Football Show." "I think the starters were only out there for a drive, and I would have liked to have seen two or three." Against the Texans, McCarthy led a 10-play scoring drive, completing 4 of 7 pass attempts for 30 yards. Klassen referred to a throw to receiver Jordan Addison in the preseason opener that went for an 18-yard gain but was slightly off-target and caught by Addison with a spectacular diving effort. Read more: J.J. McCarthy Faces Brutally Honest Take After Vikings Camp "Baker Mayfield can throw it through a keyhole the way that we saw from J.J. McCarthy on that throw to [Jordan] Addison," Klassen added. "He also, because he's doing that, sometimes you grip the ball a little too tight and you just overshoot a guy by four yards." It's a fair critique that McCarthy may be holding the ball a bit too tight in the first game he has played in a calendar year. However, Addison was held coming out of his break on an anticipation throw. McCarthy was also hit as he threw. I feel this was J.J. McCarthy's 'best throw' of the one series he played in the pre-season opener vs. Texans. It was also his longest completion of the game (18 yards). McCarthy finished the day 4/7 (57.1%) for 30 yards. He averaged 4.3 yards per pass attempt. Stats: ESPN — FIRST ROUND MOCK (@firstroundmock) August 9, 2025 Klassen wasn't entirely pessimistic about McCarthy's preparedness for the season. "I'm just hoping that's something he cleans up a little bit more as he gets used to feeling how the bullets are flying again. Because, again, once you haven't played for a year, it can be tricky to feel the timing of all that," Klassen said. Read more: Vikings Coach Offers Cryptic J.J. McCarthy Update While McCarthy did not play against the Patriots on Saturday, he put on a show in joint practices, which head coach Kevin O'Connell has used as his main evaluation of his quarterbacks in the past. According to The Athletic's Patriots beat reporter Chad Graff, McCarthy looked like a "star," completing 17 of 20 passes for six touchdowns against New England's starters on the second day of joint practices. Where should fantasy managers look to draft TreVeyon Henderson?

Yahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and Justin Boone examine the fantasy outlook for the Patriots rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson through two preseason games. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The star of the preseason, let's say, is Travon Henderson. I think he's probably going to be the picture on this show. Um, you know, we had a clip that got posted last week when we talked about him, and I always find it funny when you talk about a player who's kind of on the rise like this, especially a rookie, especially in the summer, and you get people responding to it and some people are responding to it saying like, yeah, obviously, we already know that guy's great. How, how, why are you talking about him? It's a waste of time, right? And then you get people like, you know. Mad that you're going to push his ADP up, that they don't want you talking about him because they're not going to be able to get him at the same price that they've been getting him at in their mock drafts. Like, all of that is so funny to me. I love those comments. Keep them coming. I laugh when I see them, and we're not going to stop talking about guys that are on the rise, even if they are obvious players, because we're trying to throw that blanket over all of this, right? And there's some people that no ball and are hardcore fantasy players, and there's some people like some of my friends that just show up. This time of year, and they're trying to play catch up on who's on what team and what's going on, and we got to do stuff for them as well. We got to make sure they know about somebody like Travon Henderson who has just been crushing it, right? And we don't have to spend a ton of time because we've already talked about him on the show, but he continues to look great. 8 touches for 50 scrimmage yards and a touchdown through 2 preseason games. It just gives you like that glimpse of what he's capable of. And Rhamondre Stevenson is still going to be involved. I said this when we did the running back show the other day. When Jamir Gibbs had his rookie season, David Montgomery was still involved, and Jamir Gibbs on a per game basis was the RB 11 in half PPR fantasy points per game. So we could see a very big season from Henderson even if Stevenson is still getting a lot of work in that offense. I'm going to take him in the 4th round. That's a smash pick in the 4th round, even though we were getting him in the 5th and maybe even the 6th earlier this summer. Take him in the 4th. The third, I've seen him going in some leagues, that might be a little bit rich for me. He might pay that off, but I don't think you need to go that high with it. If someone wants to take him in the third, I'm gonna let them do it, and I'm gonna find somebody else. Close
