2025 UCLA Football Predictions: Bruins Ranked 48th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where UCLA lands in my Ultimate 136.
UCLA ranking: 48
Last year's ranking: 74
Top player: QB Nico Iamaleava: Owns an 11-3 record as a starting QB; totaled 2,930 passing yards, 21 passing TDs, 435 rushing yards, and 6 rushing TDs in his career at Tennessee.

RJ's take: As QB Nico Iameleava's relationship with Tennessee grew more acrimonious, it became clear that a divorce was in the making. DeShaun Foster saw an opportunity, and he took it.

In what looked like a straight swap, projected Bruins starter Joey Aguilar transferred to Tennessee after Iamaleava transferred to UCLA. And, for the first time in his short career at UCLA, Foster has a former five-star at QB. But Bruins fans know that alone won't fix their problem of breaking through in the Big Ten. They had Dante Moore, who will start for Oregon this season, and all they managed to show for it was a single top-25 win, a city championship over rival USC and an 8-5 record.
With Iamaleava at QB, the team feels like it should have a better passing attack, another capable rusher on the field at all times, and a playmaker when the play breaks down. But that won't matter much if UCLA doesn't improve its rushing attack after ranking 132nd among 134 FBS teams last season.
The slate isn't kind either. UCLA will take on Utah and UNLV in its non-conference schedule, while also playing Penn State, at Indiana, Nebraska, at Ohio State and at USC.

Rumors fly surrounding Oklahoma QB John Mateer and 2022 UCLA-USC football game
There's a new, strange sports betting rumor swirling around the internet, with Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer being placed under review for any gambling activity. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Oklahoma is aware of the situation and is reviewing Mateer for any possible gambling activity. Mateer is entering his first season with the Sooners after playing with the Washington State Cougars the past three years. College Sports Wire writer Riley Donald explained on Tuesday why Mateer is unlikely to be the last player caught in this sort of entanglement. 'While college sports feature ads for different gambling sites every other commercial, the act of collegiate athletes gambling is still strictly prohibited and often a fast-track ticket to suspensions or worse. The latest saga around gambling activity in the college football world has the spotlight shining squarely on the Oklahoma Sooners and their new transfer quarterback John Mateer, just before the 2025 season is set to begin.' Donald wrote. The rumors began after Mateer's Venmo transaction history was posted online, with Mateer having some suspicious payments that allude to sports betting. Perhaps allude isn't a strong enough word, as Mateer had one payment titled simply 'Sports gambling (UCLA vs USC).' Mateer claimed that his transactions were an "inside joke" and that no illegal activity had occured. Mateer shouldn't be viewed as guilty simply off his Venmo transaction history, but the date of Mateer's transaction referring to USC and UCLA came just one day after the Bruins lost to the Trojans 48-45 back in 2022, which only makes it more likely that he had a wager on the game. Three days later, Mateer had another Venmo payment, receiving a payment titled 'Ultra sports gambling fifa World Cup' that was completed three days after the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. These sorts of scandals, it will be argued by some, will continue with the continued acceptance of sports betting in American society, with professional and collegiate programs signing deals with sports betting companies while holding the expectation for players, both pro and collegiate, to not participate.

Is Titans HC Brian Callahan to blame for slow starts?
The Tennessee Titans held their first of two joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday. A second session will occur on Wednesday, and the two sides will conclude their collaborative week with a preseason game on Friday. The Titans struggled at Tuesday's practice, arising concerns from various veteran leaders. Jeffery Simmons voiced his disdain for the Titans' slow start. 'Guys have to come out ready,' Simmons said. 'If we start out slow during a game, we saw it last season, we're down 28-0. We keep saying we're starting slow. We started slow [joint practice] in Tampa [and now we started slow] in Atlanta. It's time to start fast.' Simmons wasn't the only Titans player to make the connection. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. used an expletive to describe Tuesday's performance. Tight end Chig Okonkwo expressed similar concerns. Simmons referred to last season's 42-19 blowout defeat to the Washington Commanders in which they trailed 28-0 in the second quarter. In Week 3 versus the Green Bay Packers, they were down 20-7 at halftime. Brian Callahan has taken unique approaches this offseason to alter the mindset. Callahan's effectiveness as a head coach remains questionable after a 3-14 debut campaign, and hopefully slow starts aren't a staple of his leadership. Last week, Callahan chewed out the offense for a terrible performance at practice. Cam Ward and the Titans responded the following day by enjoying a significantly better session. Ideally, you'd like to see the offense (and defense) respond in similar fashion in Wednesday's second joint practice with the Falcons, and again in Friday's exhibition game. Callahan is entering the 2025 campaign on the hot seat. GM Mike Borgonzi didn't appoint him, Ran Carthon did. Callahan got his wish with Ward at No. 1 overall, so there's pressure to improve on a horrific 2024 campaign.

DeSean Bishop has 'grown tremendously' in pass protection ahead of 2025 season
Tennessee practiced for a tenth time during fall training camp on Tuesday. Redshirt sophomore DeSean Bishop enters his third season with the Vols in 2025. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound running back appeared in 10 contests during the 2024 campaign. Bishop totaled 455 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on 74 attempts in 2024. He also recorded one reception for 10 yards in the Vols' season opener against Chattanooga. Following Tuesday's practice, running backs coach De'Rail Sims discussed Bishop's improvement during the offseason. 'I think he's taken a step in terms of leadership, number one,' Sims said. 'He's been a dynamic guy in the room, in terms of holding guys accountable. If somebody is not living up to the standard, he's the first one to get on them, and that's including all factors. 'I think from the pass protection standpoint, he's taken the next step too. From a physicality standpoint, an eye discipline standpoint, he's done a really good job. Running the ball is natural to him, I mean, you're talking about a guy that was highly productive in high school and rushed for a ton of yards, so that came natural.
