Fire trio reunites: Shabana Azmi recalls how Farhan Akhtar's input changed the ending

India Today3 hours ago

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi recently reunited with director Deepa Mehta and co-star Nandita Das, celebrating 25 years of their landmark film Fire. Along with a photo where the trio is seen in matching black outfits, Azmi reflected on the film's legacy, surprising creative decisions, and Farhan Akhtar's small contribution to the film."The #Fire trio! 25 years later the film continues to be a point of reference all over the world," Azmi captioned the post, emphasising the impact of the 1996 film, which was part of Mehta's Elements Trilogy.advertisementAzmi revealed that 'Fire' originally had a different ending, which was eventually changed on the advice of a young Farhan Akhtar. 'Few know that it had a different ending. It was young @faroutakhtar who advised that the ending should be changed to what is finally kept,' she wrote.
Another interesting detail involved the film's language. Azmi shared that 'Fire' was initially intended to be shot in Hindi. However, the dialogues didn't resonate authentically in translation. 'So literally two days before the shoot, Deepa Mehta decided to keep the original English, greatly approved by producer Bobby Bedi. Thank god the actors were bilingual and could rise to the challenge,' she added.advertisement'Fire', which told the story of two women navigating desire and freedom within the confines of a patriarchal household, stirred controversy upon release but has since achieved cult status. Lauded for its bold narrative and emotional depth, it remains a seminal work in Indian independent cinema and LGBTQ+ representation.Speaking at a masterclass session during the Mumbai Film Festival 2024, where Azmi was in conversation with actor Vidya Balan, she had discussed the ending and how Farhan Akhtar's advice changed the film's climax."What's interesting is that Farhan is younger than Zoya and I had discussed this film with him back then. He was very young, and I told him to read the script. And he loved it. He said, 'I don't like the end because this woman (Radha) dies. It will ruin the whole purpose of the film, and people might think, you did something wrong'. He said, 'She must survive'," Azmi said, adding that she shared the feedback with Mehta.Directed by Deepa Mehta, 'Fire' starred Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi, Jaaved Jaaferi, Vinay Pathak and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.. Directed by auteur Anurag Kashyap, the noir thriller has already created ripples on the global festival circuit — from Cannes to global showcases — and will now be part of NYIFF's stellar lineup. Bhat's performance in Kennedy has been widely applauded for its haunting intensity and layered depth, earning him accolades and devoted fans along the way. While the film has wowed audiences internationally, Indian fans are still eagerly awaiting a domestic release. Both Kashyap and Bhat have expressed frustration over the ongoing delay, which has only heightened anticipation. The actor recently landed in New York and marked the moment with a post on social media, writing: "Brace yourself NYC, Kennedy is here." Ahead of the festival, Bhat also shared a touching fan message that reflects the emotional resonance his performance has had with audiences. The note read: "From the moment we met at #iffigoa I knew I met someone special... The peak was when I saw him in Cannes... Rahul has made it then and since never turned back... Joining Bhat in the spotlight at NYIFF is Nawazuddin Siddiqui, also nominated for Best Actor, and Anurag Kashyap, nominated for Best Director — underscoring Kennedy's powerful presence at this year's festival. Meanwhile, Bhat is also making moves beyond Indian cinema. He is preparing for his Hollywood debut with Lost and Found in Kumbh, which he presented at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival — marking another major leap in his evolving international career. India's unique AI integrated virtual production hub announced in Tamil Nadu

In a move set to redefine film infrastructure in South Asia, UK-based SRAM & MRAM Group and Paradigm Pictures have announced a ₹3,000 crore investment to develop a 100-acre, tech-integrated virtual production campus in Tamil Nadu. Unveiled during SRAM & MRAM's 30th anniversary at Raven's Ait on the Thames, the project blends advanced AI-rendered environments with real-world sets to create a hybrid model of cinematic production. The complex will feature twelve LED volume stages, equipped with AI-driven rendering engines and 360-degree 4K displays, allowing filmmakers to build photorealistic virtual worlds in real time. This technology, popularized by productions such as The Mandalorian, is expected to see rapid global expansion. Research from Deloitte suggests virtual production could cut traditional film shoot times by up to 25% and reduce production costs by nearly 30%—a transformative impact in an industry constrained by rising budgets and logistical complexity. Unlike traditional backlot studios, the Tamil Nadu hub will also incorporate fully operational physical sets—including functional hospital wards, university classrooms, village streetscapes, and urban replicas of cities like Mumbai and Chennai—all designed to extend seamlessly into virtual environments. Proprietary anti-glare display systems and adaptive lighting technologies will ensure realism during mixed-reality shoots, eliminating post-production masking typically required with green screen. Powering this infrastructure is a 30MW solar farm, aligning the initiative with global moves toward sustainable media production. By minimizing location-based shooting and reducing construction waste through modular digital-first design, the campus is projected to lower environmental impact by up to 80% compared to conventional facilities. In a notable integration of education and production, the facility will also launch a tech-forward training academy in partnership with National Award-winning and BAFTA-affiliated talent, aimed at building regional capacity in visual effects (VFX), virtual cinematography, and real-time rendering. Mr. M.G. Sekhar, former MP from Tamil Nadu, and Mr. Vengateshwaran Sekhar of Sapthagiri Group of Colleges are collaborating to bridge educational, governmental, and community linkages. Cinematic strategist Mr. Asish Pandit, known for his decades of experience across Indian and international productions, will oversee implementation. 'This project is not just about building sets—it's about building ecosystems for a new generation of storytelling, where AI, design, and physical craftsmanship coexist,' he stated. The film city will also feature AI-controlled smart residences, AR-enhanced visitor experiences, and a digital asset management system for storing and licensing content. Early projections estimate the facility could create over 10,000 skilled jobs and contribute ₹1,200 crore annually through film tourism, post-production services, and tech exports. By positioning India as a viable location for large-scale virtual production, the project offers a future-facing blueprint for how the global film industry can evolve at the intersection of culture, sustainability, and technology.
