Sabah launches utility corridor to drive strategic infrastructure growth
KOTA KINABALU (July 4): The State Government has taken a bold step to strengthen infrastructure delivery in Sabah with the official launch of the Sabah Utility Corridor (KUS), a strategic initiative aimed at catalysing systemic development across the state.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the establishment of KUS is not merely the creation of a new entity, but a strong reflection of the government's commitment to fast-track development, streamline utility coordination and attract fresh investments into Sabah.
'KUS has been mandated to function as a one-stop agency to expedite utility work permit processes and develop a comprehensive state-wide utility asset database,' he said in his keynote address delivered by Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, at the official launch at Marriott Hotel on Friday.
He noted that this initiative aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which prioritises inclusive development and the delivery of services that are efficient, transparent and future-ready.
With the integration of digital technology and a unified utility mapping system under KUS, Hajiji said project approvals will be accelerated, overlapping of work can be reduced, and field safety will be enhanced.
'This approach will have a significant impact not just on the smooth execution of government and private sector projects, but also supports Sabah's digitalisation agenda, investment competitiveness and smart city development,' he said.
He added that this is a clear example of how public-private sector synergy can yield high-impact solutions for the people.
Hajiji also emphasised that improved coordination of utility processes would unlock more areas for development, which in turn would stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.
'Projects like this will reinforce industrial logistics and expand access to basic amenities such as electricity, clean water and telecommunications for our rural communities,' he added.
Hajiji also called on all staff of KUSSB and Qhazanah Sabah Berhad to carry out their duties with professionalism and unwavering commitment, ensuring the corridor brings real benefits to the people.
'We've laid a solid foundation. Now is the time to execute it with courage and conviction,' he stressed.

SHAH ALAM, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Selangor State Legislative Assembly was briefed today on the progress of the Hulu Langat Flood Mitigation Project Phase 2, now in the detailed design phase. State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said once the design phase is complete, the project will proceed with land acquisition and utility relocation before physical construction begins, which is expected to start in 2027. 'The project covers several areas, including Kajang town, Kampung Sungai Serai, Kampung Sungai Lui, Kampung Dusun Tua, Taman Sri Nanding, Taman Sri Jelok, and Kampung Sungai Kantan. 'The work involves river deepening, constructing embankments and water gates, as well as installing pumps and building water retention ponds,' he said during the assembly sitting here today. He was responding to an oral question from Datuk Johan Abd Aziz (BN-Dusun Tua) regarding the status of the Hulu Langat flood mitigation plan. KL Hosts 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting Amid Heightened Global Interest
The Malaysian capital takes centre stage on the international diplomatic calendar this week as it hosts the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related sessions from July 8 to 11 under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', in line with Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), the high-level event gathers over 40 foreign ministers and representatives from ASEAN member states and external partners, with the exception of Myanmar, which will be represented by a senior foreign ministry official. Timor-Leste will attend as an observer. Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin confirmed full attendance from ASEAN's dialogue partners, reflecting global interest in the bloc's strategic role. Malaysia fully supports an Asean Power Grid, says PM Anwar
RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia fully supports Vietnam's aspirations for an Asean Power Grid — an infrastructure project to ensure energy security and sustainable growth. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia supported potential investment in renewable energy in southern Vietnam, including the seabed cable initiatives capable of strengthening two-way energy networks. Anwar said this after receiving a courtesy visit from Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. "I look forward to a follow-up meeting with him at the Asean Summit this October," he said after the meeting. Anwar said the meeting provided an opportunity to assess the progress of cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam across multiple fields, including trade, investment, defence, security, maritime affairs, fisheries, green energy, and petroleum. "I also raised the need to strengthen cooperation in combating illegal and unregulated fishing activities. "I also expressed hope that a more constructive approach can be forged to ensure the sustainability of marine resources and preserve good relations between the two countries," he added. Anwar also met Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and both agreed to further elevate the relationship between our two countries through cooperation in various fields.
