Putin tells Kyiv, Europe not to 'create any obstacles' to peace

LBCI2 days ago
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine and its European allies should not create "obstacles" to peace as he spoke alongside U.S. counterpart Donald Trump after their Friday summit focused on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Putin said Moscow expected "that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles, will not make attempts to disrupt the emerging progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigues."

Hamas agrees to new Gaza ceasefire proposal

by Naharnet Newsdesk 18 August 2025, 18:12 A Hamas source told AFP on Monday that the Palestinian militants had agreed to a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, devastated by more than 22 months of war between the Islamist group and Israel. "Hamas has delivered its response to the mediators, confirming that Hamas and the factions agreed to the new ceasefire proposal without requesting any amendments," the Hamas source told AFP, requesting anonymity. A Palestinian official earlier on Monday told AFP that mediators had proposed an initial 60-day truce and hostage release in two batches.

Hamas delegation in Egypt receives a cease-fire proposal

A Hamas delegation has received a new cease-fire proposal for the Gaza Strip from mediators in Cairo, a Palestinian official close to the matter told AFP. "The proposal is a framework agreement to launch negotiations on a permanent cease-fire. Hamas will hold internal consultations within its leadership," and with leaders of other allied groups on the new proposal, the source told AFP. The document reprises the main points of a previous U.S. proposal, providing for a 60-day truce and the release, in two stages, of Israeli hostages abducted on Oct. 7, 2023, during Hamas' unprecedented attack in Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza. Earlier, Saudi channel al-Hadath reported on the new proposal sent to Hamas and other Palestinian factions, which called for a swift response "in the next few hours." Al-Hadath and Qatari outlet al-Araby al-Jadid also indicated a meeting will take place in Egypt during the day between mediators, with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammad al-Thani in attendance.

Israel says will deliver humanitarian aid to South Sudan

Israel on Monday announced it will provide emergency humanitarian aid to South Sudan, one of the world's poorest countries in the midst of renewed violent political instability. The announcement by Foreign Minister Gideon Saar comes after media reports that Israel held talks with the African state to resettle Palestinians from Gaza — a claim South Sudan has firmly rejected. The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, now in its 23rd month, has created a dire humanitarian crisis for the Palestinian territory's population of more than two million people. "In light of the severe humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, [Israel] will deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations in the country," a statement from Saar's office said. "South Sudan is currently struggling with a cholera outbreak and facing a severe shortage of resources," the statement added. "The aid will include essential medical supplies for treating patients, water purification equipment, gloves and face masks, as well as special hygiene kits to prevent cholera" and food packages, the statement added. Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel paid an official visit to the country's capital Juba last week. Meanwhile, U.N.-backed experts have warned of widespread famine unfolding in Gaza, where Israel has drastically curtailed the amount of humanitarian aid it allows in and convoys have been repeatedly looted. Rights group Amnesty International on Monday accused Israel of enacting a "deliberate policy" of starvation in Gaza and "systematically destroying the health, well-being and social fabric of Palestinian life". Israel has rejected claims of deliberate starvation. The war in Gaza was triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's offensive has killed at least 62,004 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza which the United Nations considers reliable.
