Marcus Rashford diagnoses Manchester United's problems after loan move to FC Barcelona: 'Direction is always changing…'
A childhood fan who has played for the Premier League giants since his days in their academy, Rashford nonetheless had scathing criticism of how United have gone about their business as they try to return to the top of world football.
Appearing on the Stick to Football podcast alongside former Barcelona and England great Gary Lineker as well as Micah Richards, the 27-year-old put all the cards on the table to explain what has gone wrong with the team not having won the Premier League in 12 years.
"You see it with any team that's been successful over a period of time: they have principles that any coach that comes in, any player that comes in, has to align to these principles or be able to add to these principles,' explained Rashford regarding his time at United. 'Whereas at times I feel like United have just been: we're hungry to win, so we'll always try to adapt and to sign players that fit this system. But it's reactionary.'
'You might win some cup tournaments…'
Since legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, United have gone through six different permanent managers, with Rashford himself having played under five in his nine years since his senior debut.
"If your direction's always changing, you can't expect to be able to win the league. Yeah, you might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you do have a good coach and you do have good players and you have match winners in your team - you're not there by accident,' explained Rashford, who has helped United to FA Cups, League Cups, and the Europa League, but never to a league title.
'You have to make a plan and stick with it…'
The England international further went on to explain that his time away from United, first with a loan at Aston Villa at the start of this year and now following his move to Spain, has helped him understand why the team he supports has struggled in such a way.
"We've been way below where we deem United to be. But then if you take a step back, which I've been able to do, especially over the last six months - what do you expect? People say we've been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition,' said Rashford.
'So it's like the actual transition's not started yet,' explained the winger. "To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. So this is the thing that I feel - it's not easy. Because if it's not going well, the fans demand [change].'
"But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is. I feel like we've had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win … you end up in the middle of no man's land,' concluded Rashford, who will be trying to play his part in a first league title with Barcelona, with an eye on the Champions League as well.

On this day: 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar scores his maiden Test century in heroic rescue act, a sign of things to come
35 years and ninety-nine international centuries ago, the greatest modern batter of our age scored the first of many centuries throughout his storied career. A 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar, who had already put the world on notice through his precocious batting talent, registered the milestone to go with it, as he had Old Trafford on its feet with a display of grit and quality that could have fooled you into thinking this was a man twice his age. Sachin Tendulkar walks out of Old Trafford after scoring his maiden Test century to rescue the match for India. In just his ninth Test match, against an England team that had already won the opening Test at Lord's and had set the Indian team a massive target of 408 now at Old Trafford, the wiry Tendulkar had his task cut out for him. He had scored an impressive-looking 68 in the first innings, taking an hour to get off the mark in seaming conditions. But walking in at 109/4 as the pitch began to deteriorate and misbehave, a little bit more would be needed. Tendulkar, who had debuted the year prior and was still finding his footing at the Test level, joined captain Mohammed Azharuddin during what is considered the latter's legacy-defining Test summer. Azhar had scored a formidable 179 in the first innings, but it wasn't to be this time: he was dismissed for 11, and all the weight was suddenly on the young Tendulkar's shoulders. Teenaged Tendulkar holds off English behemoth It is a position he would grow very familiar with over the years, the expectations of a nation on his back, but here was a teenager still trying to find his footing, facing up against some fiery pace bowling and an English captain with the stature of Graham Gooch. Most cricketers would have wilted in that moment, and understandably so. But Sachin Tendulkar has never been and will never be remembered as 'most cricketers'. Playing the kinds of flourishing back-foot punches and square drives and flicks off his legs that he would immortalize over his long career, Sachin provided a glimpse of what to come: the sort of remarkable talent and ability that blessed him with the ability to change games. Kapil Dev was dismissed to make it 183/6, but despite India staring down the barrel at that point, Sachin struck up an iconic 140-run unbeaten partnership with Manoj Prabhakar, seeing out the remainder of the match and helping India to a hard fought draw. Give the Master Blaster some more time, and he likely would have won a famous Test for the Indian team as well. It would take Tendulkar another 18 months to get his next international century, but after that, he never showed any signs of stopping. But those who were turning in on the August evening in Manchester caught an early glimpse of the greatness that was to come.

Arne Slot must focus on man management at reinforced Liverpool else all the money spent will go down the drain
In Marvel's Multiverse saga, the big bad Thanos used to collect Infinity Stones and place them in a glove called the Infinity Gauntlet to harness the powers of the aforementioned stones. Ahead of the new season, the big English clubs have all embodied the Mad Titan, hellbent on collecting huge names from all around the globe to compete for their holy grail, the glistening glory of the iconic Premier League Trophy. In the recent past, the race for the trophy had but only one destination. The Etihad with a ruthless Manchester City team refusing to relinquish their vice-like grip from the title, winning it a record fourth time in a row from the 2020-21 season to the 2023-24 season. Last season though, Liverpool under new manager Arne Slot, successfully broke the streak and won the title for the 20th time in their history. So, it was natural that the Reds would do everything in their might to hold on to the silverware for the second year running, something they haven't done since 1984. So, they needed reinforcements. In came Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayern Leverkusen, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, while names such as Trent Alexander Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez left for pastures anew. With the transfer window still active, Liverpool are also circling around stars like Parma's Giovanni Leoni, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and the biggest of them all, Alexander Isak from Newcastle. With so many signings in a single window, it does strengthen the squad but the club will also have to be adept in man management while dealing with them as the players bed in to the system. This has the potential to be a Man City-like evolution or a complete disaster of epic proportions. Only time will tell. Man City, meanwhile, are going into the new season with an air of uncertainty around them. Last year's meltdown is still fresh on everyone's minds and not even the most ardent of City haters must have had City finishing trophyless in their bingo card. But that is exactly what happened. Pep Guardiola's side suddenly sputtered, spewed and combusted, relinquishing the EPL title while also getting eliminated from the Round of 16 of the Champions League. Many will point out that the absence of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri might have been the source of City's miseries but while that might have been one of the issues, the signs were already there in the 23-24 season when they had been winless in the league for a whole month. They had recovered back then but last season with Liverpool firing on all cylinders, there was no comeback. The Citizens looked to address the concerns with new signings Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves, Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan ahead of the expanded Club World Cup. But after an initial flurry, the malaise of conceding came back to haunt them when they lost 4-3 to Saudi club Al Hilal in another Round of 16 exit. Now if you come to Arsenal, they have been the most consistent team in the league for the past few seasons, regularly finishing second from 2022-2025. This might be a make-or-break season for manager Mikel Arteta who has been in charge since 2019 and has just a FA Cup to show for it. However, his philosophy has resonated with the squad with the Gunners playing their best football in quite some time, the culmination of which came last season when they knocked out the mighty Real Madrid from the UCL quarter finals. But they still needed a proven No.9 to get that final push to glory. And they have that in Viktor Gyokeres, who last season scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, more than even Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah. They have also reinforced their midfield and defence with huge signings like Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Nono Madueke from Chelsea and goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga from Bournemouth to name a few. However, the path to the title won't be easy with Arsenal given a fixture from hell where they face Manchester United in their very first match, followed by Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle, all within their first 6 matchdays. United and recent Club World Cup winners Chelsea have also made signings that plug in the gaps in their respective problem areas with the Red Devils set to field a new look front three with Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig while also chasing Brighton's Carlos Baleba in order to secure their mostly leaky midfield. As manager Ruben Amorim looks to recover from their lowly 15th place finish last term, even he knows it's going to be a long way back with United having to navigate through a tough opening period with clashes against Arsenal, City and Chelsea lined up in their first 5 fixtures. Chelsea, meanwhile, seemed to have found their mojo after a couple of underwhelming seasons, finishing 4th in the league in the 2024-25 season and also thrashing Champions League winners PSG 4-0 in the Club World Cup final. This was courtesy of an inspired signing of Joao Pedro from Brighton who has started life at Stamford Bridge with a bang. His partnership with Cole Palmer looks almost Kevin de Bruyne-Haaland-esque which might pose a problem for the rest of the teams. The Blues, however, have also signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, Jorrel Hato from Ajax and Jamie Gittens as their squad depth looks formidable heading into the new season.
