HGTV named the best roadside attractions in New Hampshire, Maine. They're pretty sweet

Yahooa day ago
Summer's almost over, why not end it with a classic family road trip?
And these two stops might be the road trip destinations you're looking for.
HGTV ranked the top 50 must-see roadside attractions in the United States, with one for each state, and the Home and Garden Network named two locations as New Hampshire's and Maine's best roadside attractions.
"Most of these stops are located right off major highways for easy hop-out and hop-back in photos," HGTV said. "But there are a couple of gems worth the county road detour that we couldn't resist including."
Here's what HGTV picked as the best and most eye-catching roadside attractions in New Hampshire and Maine.
Chutters, Littleton
HGTV chose Chutters as New Hampshire's most stunning roadside attraction because of its record-breaking confectionary feat as well as its historic longevity.
What HGTV said about it: "No road trip would be complete without snacks, and if you're driving through New Hampshire, you have to stop at Chutters—especially if you have a sweet tooth. Home of the world's longest candy counter, this sugary shop in Littleton, New Hampshire, has been on Main Street for more than 100 years, and it features 112 feet of glass containers with all kinds of rare, nostalgic confections. And while the candy is most famous, don't miss Chutters' homemade fudge and chocolate, too."
You can find Chutters at 43 Main St. in Littleton, New Hampshire. It operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"Grab a bag and choose from the vast array of sours and gummies, gourmet and traditional jellybeans, chocolates, licorice, caramels, and nostalgic pieces," the Chutters website said. "Chutters is a treasure trove of tasty treats!"
Wild Blueberry Heritage Center, Columbia Falls
HGTV chose the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center because of how it highlights one of Maine's most prized culinary achievements: cultivating the wild blueberry.
What HGTV said about it: "If you didn't make a pitstop for a lobster roll, you didn't road trip through Maine. However, The Pine Tree State also boasts another hallmark eat: wild blueberries. And the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center (formerly Wild Blueberry Land) on Route 1 in Columbia Falls is the place to get your fix. Handbuilt by wild blueberry farmers Marie and Dell Emerson in 2001, the bakery-meets-museum is literally shaped like a blueberry, with additional quirky structures to pose with. There's a blueberry pie canopy, a blueberry throne, and inside you'll find tasty treats, from fresh-baked pies to wild blueberry coffee."
You can find the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center at 1067 U.S. Route 1 in Columbia Falls, Maine.
The heritage center operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., opens its doors starting June 27, and closes its doors on Oct 13, the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center website said.

Southwest Teasing Major 'Getaways' Announcement August 19

This year, Southwest Airlines has been implementing some major changes, with another one coming August 19. Some of the new initiatives, like ending the "Bags Fly Free" and unassigned seating policies, have not gone over well with customers. Early returns on the shuttering of several direct flights are not positive either. Other programs seem to be faring better, including the airline's new recent partnership with Priceline. This brings us to Getaways by Southwest, which will be fully unveiled on National Aviation Day, which is Tuesday, August 19. The news about the Getaways program isn't fresh; Southwest actually announced it last September. However, all of the details and destinations will be out Tuesday. Southwest has been teasing the launch of Getaways by Southwest on Instagram over the last few days. What is Getaways by Southwest? Getaways by Southwest officially brings Southwest's vacation service in-house. Previously, the operations for Southwest Vacations were outsourced to Apple Leisure Group. Six markets-- Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay--have already been announced. "Getaways will launch with 30+ markets, including popular locations like Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay," says the official Southwest website. "Confirmed partnerships include casino-hotel Caesars Entertainment, and all-inclusive brands Playa Hotels & Resorts and Sandos Hotels & Resorts, with more to come." What the service offers Southwest executive vice president of transformation Ryan Green told Travel Weekly last September that Getaways by Southwest will offer a variety of benefits, including the ability to purchase packages using Rapid Rewards points. Each customer will get two free checked bags, the ability to make changes to their flight up to 10 minutes before and the ability to cancel up to 10 minutes before and still receive a travel credit. "It will be very friendly and flexible," Green said. Southwest will also have direct partnerships with hotels and ground transportation, opening the door for more potential customer rewards. Southwest Bringing Back 'Bags Fly Free'--But There's a Catch

Southwest Airlines' "Bags Fly Free" policy may not be dead yet, but it's only going to be available under one condition. For decades, Southwest was known for its popular declaration that each passenger was entitled to two free checked bags. When that rule was abolished earlier this year, it unsurprisingly sparked backlash. Now, "Bags Fly Free" is coming back--but only if you're booking a trip under Southwest's new in-house vacation service, Getaways by Southwest, which is set to launch on Tuesday. Customers using the service to travel will have access to several perks, including two free bags. "With packing flexibility (every Customer on the booking gets two free checked bags—weight and size limits apply), change flexibility (make changes up to 10 minutes before your flight), and cancel for credit flexibility (cancel up to 10 minutes before your flight and receive a vacation travel credit), it's never been easier to getaway," the official Getaways by Southwest website says. What is Getaways by Southwest? Announced last fall, Getaways by Southwest is the budget airline's first-ever proprietary vacation booking service. Previously, customers could access Southwest Vacations through Apple Leisure Group. Full details will be out on Tuesday, but several destinations and partnerships have already been announced. "Getaways will launch with 30+ markets, including popular locations like Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay," says the official Southwest website. "Confirmed partnerships include casino-hotel Caesars Entertainment, and all-inclusive brands Playa Hotels & Resorts and Sandos Hotels & Resorts, with more to come." How has removing "Bags Fly Free" affected Southwest? Under its new policy, Southwest passengers can check their first bag for $35 and a second for $45. In addition to drawing the ire of longtime customers, eliminating "Bags Fly Free" had some unintended consequences for the airline. Instead of paying to check their luggage, fliers instead began bringing carry-ons, which led to some awkward situations. "We're seeing Southwest Airlines gate agents require checking bags early, when there's still plenty of overhead bin space left. They've given up the advantage of not having to gate check bags, right at the same time they're facing a lot of pressure to reduce the amount of time it takes to board so that planes spend less time on the ground and more time in the air generating revenue," travel insider View From the Wing wrote earlier this month. "One of the unintended consequences of customer-unfriendly changes at Southwest is that now there's a good chance you won't be able to bring your carry-on bag onboard. And there's a good chance you'll have your carry-on confiscated even when there's still space for it." The oldest standing lighthouse in NC sits on a Brunswick island. Here's how to see it.

The Old Baldy Lighthouse on Bald Head Island stands as the oldest surviving lighthouse in North Carolina. With a stair climb leading to a panoramic view of an island surrounded by water, this old lighthouse has a few views up its walls. Settled along North Carolina's coast in Brunswick County is Bald Head Island, home to the Old Baldy Lighthouse. The island is a barrier island, located south of Wilmington, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. It's one of three lighthouses in the Wilmington area, with all of them in Brunswick County: Old Baldy, the Oak Island Lighthouse in Caswell Beach, and the Price's Creek Lighthouse -- technically a range light -- located on private property in Southport. How to get to Old Baldy Lighthouse? Travelers must take a private boat or use the public ferry system to access the island and lighthouse. The Bald Head Island Ferry recommends visitors purchase ferry tickets online in advance and arrive 30-45 minutes before departure time. Once the ferry arrives at the island, Old Baldy is at 101 Lighthouse Wynd and within walking distance. Tram services are also available for ferry passengers and golf carts can be rented. There are some golf cart parking spaces at and around the lighthouse. When is the best time to go? The best times to go are around spring and fall, said Travis Gilbert, director of philanthropy for The Old Baldy Foundation. Temperatures are cooler and the island is less crowded at those times, he said. Keep up with the area's latest Brunswick County news by signing up for the How do you climb Old Baldy? The Old Baldy Lighthouse stands 110 feet tall with 108 steps, five landings and several windows. To reach the very top, visitors must climb a ships ladder. There are no ADA-accessible services available for individuals with limited mobility or those needing additional help climbing stairs. However, Gilbert said people who can make it to the second landing, around 40 steps, are still able to enjoy a nice view from a different perspective. What's special about the view? Visitors willing to climb to the top are able to experience the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the island, Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean. The sky-high view includes an overlook of preserved land between Bald Head Island and Fort Fisher, said Gilbert, noting it is surprising to see. "The view up top, you cannot beat that," Gilbert said. "It's got to be one of the better views in the area." In October, the foundation hosts a night climb called "Old Baldy After Dark" where participants can see the sunset over the water from inside the lighthouse, Gilbert added. Located next to the lighthouse is the Smith Island Museum of History in a replica of the former lighthouse keeper's cottage. The museum has historical items on display, signs telling unique history of the island scattered on the walls and a gift shop next door.
