In Kalba, where coastal landscapes merge with artistic expression, the delegation toured various installations that reflect diverse artistic perspectives on identity, migration, and cultural fusion. Among the highlights was the Ice Factory, an immersive space featuring sound and musical performances, engaging visitors through innovative sensory experiences. Other works integrated natural and historical elements, illustrating how societies evolve through time.
The council members were particularly drawn to artworks that used natural materials and contemporary techniques to revisit the region's rich maritime heritage, showcasing the deep relationship between humans and the sea. These installations offered visitors a multi-sensory experience, connecting past and present through artistic expression.
Artistic narratives on environment and heritage in Al Dhaid
In Al Dhaid, the artistic experience took on a different dimension, focusing on environmental themes, heritage, and the human connection to place. The council toured an exhibition at the Old Clinic, where a striking sculpture depicting the region's geological history stood as a reminder of the ancient sea that once covered the area millions of years ago. This installation offered visitors a moment of reflection on the passage of time and nature's influence on shaping societies.
Several works also tackled sustainability and climate change, highlighting the impact of urbanisation and environmental shifts on local communities. These interactive installations encouraged visitors to consider their role in environmental preservation.
One of the key stops for the delegation was an exhibit inspired by Al Dhaid's agricultural traditions, particularly its historic date palm groves. Through innovative artistic techniques, the works explored the relationship between agriculture, sustainability, and cultural heritage, blending tradition with modern interpretations to present a unique visual perspective on the region's farming legacy.
Acknowledging the impact of Sharjah Biennial 16
At the conclusion of the visit, Dr Al Nuaimi expressed admiration for the artistic and cultural depth of Sharjah Biennial 16, noting that it serves as a global platform for creative expression and dialogue. He emphasised that the Biennial has the power to transcend geographical boundaries, showcasing diverse artistic perspectives that deserve global recognition.
He praised the efforts of Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi in organising the Biennial and her dedication to cementing Sharjah's status as a leading centre for arts and culture.
Dr Al Nuaimi also highlighted that the visit was not merely an official engagement but a cultural and intellectual experience, allowing the council to witness firsthand the immense dedication that has shaped the Biennial over the past 32 years. He credited His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his unwavering support for the arts and belief in the power of creativity to unite people and express global issues through an artistic lens.
