Another elite 2026 running back has Notre Dame in his top-5
If you haven't noticed by now, Notre Dame football has seen a surge in recruiting with the 2026 class following a very impressive run in the College Football Playoff.
The Irish currently are contenders for multiple high-level prospects and on Thursday another one included them in his top-5. California running back Brian Bonner trimmed his list to UCLA, Washington, Penn State, Nebraska and Notre Dame. The 6-foot, 1-inch and 185-pound back is ranked as the No. 105 overall prospect nationally by the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Bonner has official visits scheduled to each of his finalists, with his to South Bend starting on June 20th. The Irish get the last shot to impress the back, and hopefully that helps win out his recruitment in the end. Notre Dame currently does not have any commits at the position in its 2026 class of eleven commits.

Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day names the starting quarterback for 2025

After a few long weeks of fall camp, the Ohio State football team has its starter for the opening game against Texas on Aug. 30. Sayin had been in a hotly contested battle with junior Lincoln Kienholz, but head coach Ryan Day announced Sayin as the starter on Monday during a press conference with the media. Originally out of Carlsbad, California, and ranked as the top quarterback in the class of 2023, Sayin originally committed to Alabama but transferred to Ohio State at the end of the 2023 season when Nick Saban retired. He sat out last season when Will Howard was brought in to steady the ship as a seasoned veteran on the way to a College Football Playoff national championship with all eyes on becoming the starter this year. That will now be realized, at least against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns when the season opens. "Julian Sayin will be the starting quarterback against Texas, Day told media members. It was a close competition. I think both guys -- we all feel confident -- can win a game for us. I think Julian separated himself really over the last week with his consistent play. I think our guys are confident, again, with both quarterbacks. I think we'll need both quarterbacks. Lincoln did a lot of great things, but we're going to name Julian the starter here and give him the majority of the reps with the ones and go prepare to beat Texas." Sayin will have a major test right away after playing in just four games last season, completing 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. The matchup with the Longhorns in under two weeks will be a tussle between two of the most highly-touted quarterbacks, with Arch Manning patrolling the opposite sideline for Texas.

Gunner Stockton left off prestigious award watch list

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton continues to be underrated by several media outlets. Out of the 27 quarterbacks selected to be on the Manning Award Preseason Watch List, Stockton was not one of them. Stockton has been one of the most divisive quarterbacks in the nation after he took over for Carson Beck in the 2024 SEC championship. He has two notable games under his belt. His first career start came against Notre Dame in the Bulldogs' playoff loss in the Sugar Bowl. There's not a ton of college tape Stockton has shown, so as a result, it has left people, like Rece Davis and Paul Finebaum, to cast doubt on how well Stockton will perform in 2025. Some, such as Joel Klatt, have doubts about Georgia football as a whole because of Stockton. At the very least, Stockton is set up well for success from the skill positions. Georgia added to the wide receiver room big time through the transfer portal, acquiring Texas A&M's Noah Thomas and USC's Zachariah Branch. Colbie Young, who was suspended from the program for most of last season due to his arrest, got another year of eligibility due to the Diego Pavia rule. There are also incumbents like Dillon Bell and London Humphreys looking to make a name for themselves in the receiving core. A big concern lies in the offensive line. Last year, they helped produce the running game with the second lowest rushing yards per game in the SEC. Now, four of the five starters on the offensive line will be new. Monroe Freeling emerged as the starting left tackle in 2024, but he struggled in the Sugar Bowl. Outside of him, no one had at least 600 snaps last year. Georgia will have to rely on a chorus of Earnest Greene III, Drew Bobo, Daniel Calhoun, and Micah Morris to pick up the slack. That has been the biggest worry for analysts like Greg McElroy.

This year's race for the Heisman Trophy has a little bit of everything. Arch Manning, the well-hyped quarterback for Texas, is the favorite at +650, but there are three other players between that price at 10/1 at bet365 Sportsbook. Garrett Nussmeier, the veteran LSU signal-caller, is the second favorite at +850, just ahead of Cade Klubnik of Clemson. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, the only non-quarterback inside of 30/1, is the fourth favorite at 10/1. LaNorris Sellers, who rounds out the top five at 16/1, received plenty of hype over the summer after he finished the 2024 season in great form for South Carolina. 2025 Heisman Trophy odds Player (Team) Odds Arch Manning (Texas) +650 Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) +850 Cade Klubnik (Clemson) +900 Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State) 10/1 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) 16/1 Drew Allar (Penn State) 18/1 Ty Simpson (Alabama) 18/1 Carson Beck (Miami) 20/1 Dante Moore (Oregon) 20/1 DJ Lagway (Florida) 20/1 Julian Sayin (Ohio State) 20/1 Gunner Stockton (Georgia) 22/1 John Mateer (Oklahoma) 25/1 Austin Simmons (Ole Miss) 33/1 Jeremiyah Love (Notre Dame) 33/1 CJ Carr (Notre Dame) 35/1 Odds via bet365 Sellers, along with fellow SEC sophomore DJ Lagway, received plenty of buzz over the offseason and could wind up as two of the most popular options outside of Manning by the time the season kicks off. Another big mover was quarterback Ty Simpson, who saw his price get slashed in half after he was named as Alabama's starter for Week 1. 2025 Heisman best bets Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame (40/1, FanDuel) The Heisman Trophy is not apples to apples with the NFL MVP. While the latter almost always just goes to the best quarterback in that season, the Heisman gets passed around, with two non-QBs winning it in the last five years. Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love could make it three in six, so long as the Fighting Irish continue to trend in the right direction. There's no secret to how the Irish want to play. They're a throwback, who wants to ground-and-pound you into submission. That's good news for those looking to back Love in this market. The junior from St. Louis tallied 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries in 2024, carrying the Irish all the way to the title game. Notre Dame is expected to contend for the championship again in 2025, and if they come close, it will likely mean Love is in the running for the Heisman. Avery Johnson of Kansas State could be in store for a big 2025. AP Avery Johnson, Kansas State (50/1, FanDuel) A couple of injuries limited Avery Johnson in his sophomore season in the Little Apple, but there was still plenty to love about the dual-threat quarterback. Johnson finished the 2024 campaign with 2,712 yards passing and 25 touchdowns, and he added another 605 yards and seven scores on the ground. In a healthy year, playing for the Big 12 favorites, those numbers should tick up, which would put him Heisman-candidate territory. Blake Horvath, Navy (400/1, BetMGM) We've gone deeper on this pick here, but there's still time to get on the bandwagon for the Navy quarterback who finished last year with a ridiculous statistical profile. Horvath was responsible for 30 touchdowns for the Midshipmen in 2024, running for 17 and adding 13 more through the air. Betting on College Football? The Ohio native ranked 20th in the country with 1,254 yards on the ground, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. If Navy gets into the Playoff, which is not out of the question, Horvath could be one of the favorites for this award.
