Cops arrest 11 in firearms case

Pune: The Pune city police crime branch, in separate actions, arrested 11 men and recovered 12 country-made pistols and 15 rounds from them between July 30 and Aug 14. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nikhil Pingale on Saturday said the investigations into firearm cases revealed that most criminals released on bail acquired knowledge for procuring weapons from different places in Madhya Pradesh from other criminals currently lodged at Yerawada Central Jail. Pingale said the arrested men are not users, but they procure the weapons from contacts for approximately Rs 15,000 and sell them to prospective customers and criminals for Rs 40,000 or more. The weapons are used for maintaining status, security purposes, and personal vendetta, he said. SC grants bail to Laxmi Road shoe shopowner murder accused

1 2 Pune: The Supreme Court on August 13 granted bail to Anil Sapkal (52), one of the seven accused in the murder of Laxmi Road shoe shopowner. A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta stated that they were inclined to grant bail to the petitioner, Sapkal, considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the period of his incarceration of more than five years, and the fact that the co-accused, Ajinkya Dhumal, was granted bail. The court said it would be open for the prosecution to press before the trial court for determining stringent conditions, considering the role of the petitioner (Sapkal) and the seriousness of the matter. Sapkal was arrested for allegedly conspiring in the abduction and murder of Laxmi Road shoe shopowner Chandan Shevani for failing to pay an extortion of Rs5 crore. The incident occurred at Bopdev Ghat on January 4, 2020. It stated that the trial court or state could approach the SC for recalling this order in case they found that the petitioner was delaying the trial. SC lawyer Sana Raees Khan argued that Sapkal was implicated in the murder case as a prime conspirator based on a belated statement of a gang leader's wife after former's arrest. Khan said no call details record (CDR) of the gang leader's wife was annexed to the chargesheet to corroborate this allegation, and the basis of Sapkal's arrest was not established. Khan prayed to release Sapkal on bail because the evidence collected by the Pune police had no conclusive evidence to establish that he was a member of an organised crime syndicate. Constant calls with the criminal on record was not enough to indict Sapkal in the murder in the absence of a transcript of the CDR, which was not a substantive piece of evidence, she added. The police filed a chargesheet against seven accused, including criminals on record Parvez Hanif Shaikh (47) and Preetam Ramesh Aambre (41) as the prime accused, and Sapkal, in the Shevani murder case. The chargesheet stated that the accused shot him dead after he repeatedly expressed his inability to fulfil their extortion demand. Margao : Six women were booked for creating a disturbance and assaulting a police officer at Fatorda police station on Thursday, following the arrest of a man in connection with another criminal case. The group of women, led by Alvina Pereira, gathered at the entrance of Fatorda police station after her husband was brought in for questioning in connection with another criminal case, police said. According to the complaint filed by lady police sub-inspector Sukhada Prabhudessai, the six accused women — Sheetal Gunjikar, Shoba Gunjikar, Priyanka, Anjela Fernandes, and Neelam Naik, apart from Pereira — created a commotion through their 'loud behaviour'. When Prabhudessai attempted to address the situation, the women allegedly used criminal force against her by grabbing her collar, physically preventing her from carrying out her lawful duties, police said. The police booked a case under sections 132 and 221 of the BNS, 2023, which deal with assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty, and obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions.
