A.P. govt. to guarantee for ₹1,000-crore loan for developing seven airports

The Hindu7 days ago
The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday agreed to give guarantee to the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL) for obtaining ₹1,000 crore as loan to undertake the development of airports at Kuppam, Dagadarthi and Srikakulam —for land acquisition and external infrastructure creation— and Amaravati (for external infrastructure), and to extend Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support for airports and clear the urgent pending liabilities of the APADCL.
The G.O Ms. No.8 issued by Secretary (Infrastructure & Investment- Airports) N. Yuvaraj said that the government intended to develop eight greenfield airports at Srikakulam, Bhogapuram, Tuni-Annavaram, Tadepalligudem, Ongole, Kuppam, Dagadarthi and Nagarjuna Sagar, besides operationalising the international airport at Bhogapuram, for enhancing air connectivity and supporting regional economic growth.
The government also desired to establish a greenfield international airport at Amaravati.
In response a proposal made by the APADCL MD in this regard, the government accorded in-principle administrative sanction for ₹1,570.64 crore to acquire land for developing the above airports.
It also directed the MD to approach financial institutions for mobilising the funds. Accordingly, the MD submitted that the development of Kuppam, Dagadarthi, Srikakulam and Amaravati airports was being taken up under Phase - 1.
It was further mentioned that the Techno-Economic Feasibility Report (TeFR) study has been completed for Kuppam and Dagadarthi airports, while the same is in progress for the remaining two airports.
The MD sought 'shortfall government guarantee' for securing ₹1,000 crore loan from the HUDCO for developing the airports.

KSEB seeks approval for grid-scale battery storage systems at four more locations to manage surplus solar power

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has sought approval for grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) at four more of its substations to handle the large volume of surplus solar power being generated in the State. The power utility has sought the State Electricity Regulatory Commission's approval for implementing BESS systems with a combined capacity of 125 megawatt/500 megawatt hour (MW/MWh) at its substations at Sreekantapuram in Alappuzha district, Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram, Mulleria in Kasaragod and Areacode in Malappuram. In a BESS system, the MW rating denotes the maximum amount of power that it can deliver at any given moment. MWh indicates the total amount of energy that the system can store. The BESS projects at Sreekantapuram and Pothencode will each have a capacity of 40 megawatt/160 megawatt hour (MW/MWh), while the ones planned in Mulleria and Areacode will have a capacity of 15 MW/60 Mwh and 30 MW/120 MWh. KSEB proposes to implement these projects through NHPC Ltd, which has been nominated as a BESS Implementing Agency (BIA) by the Union Power Ministry under the Viability Gap Funding scheme for the development of BESS systems. The KSEB has also sought the commission's approval for the monthly capacity charges quoted by four project developers shortlisted by NHPC. The tariff quoted by the developers would remain fixed for a period of 12 years, with a provision for extending the project life by another five years with appropriate adjustments in the applicable tariff. The power utility had already announced plans to set up a BESS at the Mylatti substation in Kasaragod. In seeking the commission's approval for the four new proposals, the KSEB has cited a growing requirement for energy storage in the State, given the 'increasing solar power penetration, rising peak power demand, the installed capacity within the State, and the prevailing price of peak power.' BESS systems will increase the internal power handling capacity of the State and reduce the dependence on the inter-State power transmission corridor, according to KSEB.

ACME Solar signs agreements with NHPC for setting up two battery energy storage system projects in Andhra Pradesh

ACME Solar Holdings, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, has signed Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreements (BESPA) with NHPC Ltd. for setting up two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Andhra Pradesh with a total capacity of 275 MW/550 MWh. The projects were awarded through an e-reverse auction held late last month at tariffs of ₹2,10,000 per MW per month for 50 MW/100 MWh and ₹2,22,000 per MW per month for 225 MW/450 MWh. The projects will be implemented under the Government of India's Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, which provides financial support of ₹27 lakh per MWh or up to 30% of the total project cost, whichever is lower. Expected to be commissioned within 18 months from signing, the BESS projects will help stabilise the grid by storing power during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak demand. They are also expected to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are inherently intermittent. The initiative is a significant step in India's energy transition, introducing a pioneering 'BESS-as-a-Service' model where capacity charges are payable for storage services, setting a new benchmark for future storage deployments in the country.

Tata Power inks 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage purchase agreement with NHPC for Kerala

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has signed its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement with Government-owned power major NHPC Limited. The project, secured under NHPC's BESS tranche-I tender through a competitive bidding route for Kerala State Electricity Board Limited being the end user of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) asset, involves setting up a 30 MW/120 MWh battery storage system at the 220 kV substation in Area code, Kerala, according to a Tata Power statement released on Friday. The project will play a vital role in addressing peak power demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and enabling seamless integration of renewable energy in Kerala. It is part of the NHPC's broader initiative to develop 125 MW/500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity in the state of Kerala, under a tariff-based competitive bidding framework supported by Viability Gap Funding, the statement said. The initiative supports the Government of India's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Implemented under Ministry of Power guidelines, the project will operate under a 12-year BESPA. The project is slated for commissioning within 15 months, positioning storage as a key enabler of round the-clock renewable power and grid resilience, the statement explained. In addition to this upcoming project, TPREL is already operating a Solar and BESS project at Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh. This project comprises a 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant integrated with a 120 MWh utility scale BESS, developed under an EPC contract awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited. The project with NHPC marks TPREL's first win in the standalone BESS segment. With this addition, TPREL's total renewable capacity now stands at approximately 10.9 GW, including 5.6 GW of operational projects, comprising 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind, and 5.3 GW under various stages of development, the company statement added.
