Tim Bagley claims he couldn't audition for 'SNL 'because 'they wouldn't hire openly gay people'

Yahoo21-06-2025
Tim Bagley says any dream of his to join the Saturday Night Live cast was crushed early on.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM's The Julia Cunningham Show, the 67-year-old comedic actor claimed that despite having a promising start as part of the Groundlings — an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe that launched the careers of many SNL stars — in 1989, he couldn't audition for the sketch comedy series because he was out as a gay man.
"I was out as a gay man and people knew that they would not hire openly gay people," Bagley alleged about SNL boss Lorne Michaels and late manager Bernie Brillstein.
"[They] had kind of a thing where they did not hire gay people, so I never got to audition," the Somebody Somewhere star continued. "All my friends did, and I was always kind of a standout at the Groundlings, but I was out. That [was] the problem with being out back then was there were no guardrails. I mean, if somebody didn't want to have you on their show, they just [didn't have to]. They weren't trying to seek out LGBTQ people back then."
As it happens, Bagley is not the first person to accuse SNL and Michaels of having issues with hiring openly queer people during the peak of the show's popularity. Comedian James Adomian told the Daily Beast in 2018 that he thinks being openly gay kept him from getting a spot on the cast, though he did get to audition several times in the early 2000s.
"It certainly didn't help that I was openly gay," Adomian said. "I think that Lorne Michaels is afraid of America's dads."
Still, Bagley — who has proven his comedic chops with guest appearances on shows like Will & Grace, Seinfeld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm — noted that SNL has boasted its LGBTQ+ representation over the years, especially with cast members such as Kate McKinnon and Bowen Yang becoming prominent figures on the show.
"It's taken quite a long time... he was the actual first conscious, you know, gay person hired," Bagley claimed. "It's taken a long time, but the SNL machine has kind of changed or shifted, and I know that there are people that have come out since."
SNL's first openly gay cast member was actually Terry Sweeney, who Michaels brought onto the season 11 cast when he returned as executive producer to the show after a five-year hiatus in 1985.McKinnon, who had joined the cast after starring on the Logo sketch comedy series The Big Gay Sketch Show, became the first openly lesbian cast member in the history of the show when she joined in 2012.
John Milhiser joined the cast as an openly gay man in 2013, followed by more LGBTQ+ cast members such as Yang, Punkie Johnson, and the show's first nonbinary performer Molly Kearney. Other LGBTQ+ cast members who were not out professionally during their time on SNL include Denny Dillon, Danitra Vance, and Sasheer Zamata.
Yang started at SNL as a writer in 2018 before being promoted to cast member the next year for season 45, becoming the show's first Chinese American cast member and one of only a few out gay stars in the show's history.
He's made a name for himself at the legendary sketch show with impressions of JD Vance and Fran Lebowitz, and out-of-the-box "Weekend Update" characters like the Iceberg That Sank the Titanic and viral baby pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng. Not to mention, Yang has also scored four Emmy nominations during his time on SNL, including making history in 2021 as the first featured player to be nominated.
He's also the lead of a fan-favorite sketch from last year in which the actor "reveals" himself to be a toxic straight man that the night's host fall in love with. The OG sketch featured Sydney Sweeney and the sequel, titled "Bowen's Still Straight," included Scarlett Johansson.
Yang can next be seen in Wicked: For Good, coming to theaters later this year.

'Daily Show' Calls 'Bulls**t' On Right-Wing Defense Of Sydney Sweeney Ad

'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Thursday hit back at right-wing media figures over their reaction to backlash against Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad. Lydic referred to those accusing the ad — which declares that the blonde, blue-eyed 'Euphoria' star has 'great jeans' — of being a 'racist dog whistle' before turning to clips of conservative media figures who, in turn, reacted with a 'dog megaphone.' The supercut featured ex-Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who took aim at so-called 'nonsense where you are not allowed to ever celebrate' someone who is white and blonde with blue eyes. Fox News' Greg Gutfeld, in a separate clip from 'The Five,' imagined the backlash was due to Sweeney not being 'a plus-size swim model on the cover of Sports Illustrated' or a 'male prom queen.' Lydic — who mocked Kelly and Gutfeld for gushing over how Sweeney's body appears in the ad — swiftly advised right-wingers to 'calm down.' 'This is such bullshit, blonde women have had constant representation, OK? Inentertainment, infashion, in letter turning,' Lydic said. She proceeded to slam conservatives, 'It's not that they want to see more white women, it's that they want to see none of anyone else. For a story about boobs, it sure has a hell of a lot of assholes.' Her comments arrived moments after she called out Kelly's sudden change in tone toward Sweeney, who she once suggested to be the 'new toast of the town' due to her 'amazing breasts' roughly one month ago. The 'Daily Show' correspondent pointed to several instances where Kelly ripped famous women for their looks. 'Yeah, yeah! That's right, women, you listen to Megyn Kelly and hide your sexuality unless your body makes liberals mad, in which case it's a kickass body! Hell yeah! Go girl!' Lydic quipped. 'You motorboat those liberals here but not so much that it threatens Megyn or so help me God, she will destroy you ho bags!' Check out more of Lydic's Thursday monologue on 'The Daily Show.' Brooke Hogan explains her absence at Hulk Hogan WWE tributes

The post Brooke Hogan explains her absence at Hulk Hogan WWE tributes appeared first on ClutchPoints. Brooke Hogan is setting the record straight on why she has not attended any WWE tributes for her late father, Hulk Hogan. The WWE icon died last week at the age of 71 from a heart attack, according to multiple sources. The Brooke Knows Best star shared a post on her Instagram Story, writing, 'For those of you giving me crap for not attending my Dad's tributes, @wwe did not extend an invite.' The WWE has yet to respond to Brooke's message. The post follows Brooke breaking her silence on her father's death after their estranged relationship over the past two years. She shared in their last conversation in 2023 she shared that it was not one 'fight' that stopped them from speaking with one another. 'When he left this earth, it felt like part of my spirit left with him. I felt it before the news even reached us,' Brooke wrote. '… I know he's at peace now, out of pain, and in a place as beautiful as he imagined. He used to speak about this moment with such wonder and hope. Like meeting God was the greatest championship he'd ever have.' 'It was a series of private phone calls no one will ever hear, know, or understand,' she added. 'My father was confiding in me about issues weighing on his heart, both personal and business. I offered to be a life raft in whatever capacity he needed. I told him he had my support. I begged him to rest, to take care of himself.' Brooke, who is now the mother of twins she shares with her husband, former NHL player Steven Oleksy, shared that she supported him through his declining health. Throughout Hulk's 35 year career in the WWE, he had 25 surgeries. He told boxer Jake Paul of this last year. 'I've had like 25 surgeries in the last 10 years,' he told Jake Paul on the IMPAULSIVE podcast in September 2024. 'I've had 10 back surgeries, both knees and both hips replaced, shoulders—everything.' In addition to his 25 surgeries for WWE injuries he was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia, a form of blood cancer, that he battled privately. Brooke spoke how she was able to support him throughout the surgeries until he no longer wanted her there. 'We had been through almost 25 surgeries together, and then all of a sudden he didn't want me at surgeries…everything started getting covered in a thick veil. It was like there was a force field around him that I couldn't get through,' she continued. Hulk Hogan honored at WWE Monday Night RAW and WWE NXT It came to a point for Brooke that she had decided to stop disagreeing with her father and create space in their relationship. 'He was telling me these things, being so vulnerable with me and heard my pleas, then suddenly something shifted, and he made a choice to walk the path that clearly tore at his spirit,' she added. 'I felt a disconnect. What followed were respectful disagreements that took an emotional toll on me.' In the end, she did what was best for her emotionally and that she still loved her father despite everything. 'I know in my heart I did everything I could,' Brooke concluded. 'He knew I would run through a burning building for him. And in many ways, along the path of life, I did. He knows how deeply, how hard and how purely I loved him. I am at peace knowing this.' So far, WWE honored the late wrestling icon at WWE's Monday Night RAW earlier this week and WWE NXT on Tuesday (July 29). Despite Brooke's absence, her brother, Nick, was at the WWE Monday Night RAW event in honor of their late father.
