Wimbledon: Aryna Sabalenka avoids the wobble

Time of India5 hours ago
LONDON: Whatever is said of World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka's volatile temper, that has seen her come undone in the closing stages of championships, she's as clean as a whistle in early rounds of majors.

On a cloudy afternoon at
, when the start of play was delayed on the outside courts, Sabalenka provided the sunshine, thumping 41 winners and breaking down the resistance of Czech Marie Bouzkova to score a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win to move into the third round.

Of the last six Grand Slams that the 27-year-old Belarusian has played, she has made the final five times. She has lost three of those finals, two of them the result of meltdowns which became the talking point.
Not enough is said, however, of her professionalism in the early stages of majors. She hasn't lost in the first or second rounds since 2021.
This year her Tour record against opponents ranked outside the top-20 is 29-4. 'I'm just trying to focus on myself mainly. I know that when I'm focusing on myself, I'll be there fighting for every point,' the top-seed said.
The reason why Sabalenka took to tennis was her father Sergey, who she lost suddenly in November 2019.
For most of 2020 she struggled with the loss, but broke through to Grand Slam semifinals in 2021 — at Wimbledon and the US Open. Sabalenka's game is a beast, she's easily the hardest ball striker in the women's Tour today, and maybe the hardest hitter ever, but in recent years she has worked to bring other elements to her game.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz put out British qualifier Oliver Tarvet 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Tarvet, who plays college tennis for the University of San Diego, made his major debut here. Meanwhile, Joao Fonseca extended his debut run at Wimbledon, holding off American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to make the third round.

Djokovic aims to step up history bid at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic takes on British wildcard Dan Evans in the next stage of his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam as defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova seeks to prolong her love affair with Wimbledon. Djokovic aims to step up history bid at Wimbledon After three days of stunning upsets at the All England Club, Djokovic, Krejcikova and world number one Jannik Sinner will bid to avoid becoming the latest stars to crash out in second-round action on Thursday. Eight top 10 seeds in the men's and women's singles were beaten in the first round, which ranks as the most at a Grand Slam in the Open era. Italy's Jasmine Paolini, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, was defeated in the second round on Wednesday to leave only one of the top five women's seeds world number one Aryna Sabalenka still standing. Djokovic goes into his match against Evans with a losing record against the British wildcard, although they have met only once before. Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, was beaten by Evans on the clay of Monte Carlo in 2021. The Serb, beaten in the last two Wimbledon finals, struggled with stomach issues in his four-set win in the first round against Frenchman Alexandre Muller before recovering strongly, praising "miracle pills". Realistically, he is unlikely to lose sleep over the match-up with the 154th-ranked Briton, who, at 35, is three years younger than him, but he is wary of his opponent's experience on grass and the home support. "It's a good test for both of us," said Djokovic. "I think he's been picking his form up, as well. I think his rankings are not doing him justice at the moment. He deserves to be ranked higher. "He's one of the guys that you don't want to face on grass." Evans, for his part, knows he has to have the right mindset against the sixth seed. "He's done pretty much everything in the game," he said. "But it's also my chance to win the match. I have to be competitive." Krejcikova looked in deep trouble in her opening match before cutting out the errors and finding another gear to see off Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in three sets. The Czech 17th seed next takes on US player Caroline Dolehide, whom she has faced just once, beating her on clay in the United States in 2019. Krejcikova has had a miserable time with injuries this year and arrived at Wimbledon with just six matches under her belt in 2025. But the two-time Grand Slam champion is relishing being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing walking onto Centre Court for her first-round match as a "very beautiful and just very joyful experience". "It's just great to be back," she said. "It's just great to be playing in the temple of tennis. It's just a very, very special place." Jack Draper is the new figurehead of British tennis, taking on a role filled for a generation by the now-retired Andy Murray. The fourth seed, who meets former finalist Marin Cilic in the second round, appears comfortable with his new status. "I kind of play every match like my life depends on it anyway," said the 23-year-old. Sinner, who has never reached the Wimbledon final, takes on Australia's Aleksandar Vukic, while five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek faces America's Caty McNally. smg/iwd This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

IND vs ENG: 'Two best spinners ... ' – Sourav Ganguly slams India's 'surprising' XI call at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India's playing XI for the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday has triggered widespread debate. The inclusion of three new faces — Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep — coupled with the resting of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and the omission of in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav, drew sharp criticism from cricketing legends Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri . India's recent Test form has been underwhelming, with just one win in their last nine matches — the team's poorest run in over a decade. The struggles continued with a five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Leeds. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Former India captain Sourav Ganguly voiced concern over the spin choices. 'I'm not sure whether India are playing their two best spinners,' Ganguly said on Sony Sports. 'England have chosen to field first — that's surprising. But this could be India's best chance. Put runs on the board and hopefully it works out.' 'I had two great spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the team. I used to stop the run flow on Day 1 of the Test and the two became dangerous as the match went ahead,' he added. Sunil Gavaskar questioned the exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, especially considering the pitch conditions. IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shubman Gill's statement ton, Jaiswal misses out & Karun Nair at No.3? 'I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep wasn't picked — especially on a surface where everyone says there's a bit more turn,' Gavaskar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He also stressed that batting wasn't India's primary issue. 'If your top-order isn't scoring runs, then bringing in Washington at seven or Nitish Reddy at eight won't solve that. Those weren't the batters who failed in the first Test. You scored over 830 runs — not 380 — across two innings. That's plenty,' he added. According to Gavaskar, the team needed more focus on bowling reinforcements. 'The area that needed strengthening was wicket-taking, not batting.' Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was critical of the decision to rest Bumrah, calling it a misstep in such a crucial match. 'You don't rest your premier fast bowler in a series-defining Test,' he remarked, suggesting that Bumrah should not have had the option to sit out. With Bumrah rested, India fielded Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as their spin options in the Birmingham Test.
