‘Surreal': Dog walker's chilling discovery

Perth Now3 days ago
Port Lincoln locals Katie and her friend were walking up Slipway Rd on Thursday afternoon.
Just moments earlier, police had announced they had discovered a human skull in the walking trails and scrubland between Slipway Rd and Hindmarsh Rd on the eastern edge of the popular fishing town.
The discovery marked another grisly twist in the Tamika Chesser case, which has sent shockwaves through the small and close-knit Eyre Peninsula community.
'I'm relieved for the family, it's a bit of closure for them,' Katie said.
'But I feel devastated for the person that found it.'
Tyson McCallum was also walking in the area when his dog Benji the Beaglier found what police believe is a human head.
'I just went in a bit closer and kind of made the connection pretty quickly as to what I thought it was,' he told 9News.
'(It was) pretty surreal to be honest,' he added.
'I was kind of like 'No way, it's not what I think it is, surely not'. But it was too coincidental.'
Ms Chesser, a former Beauty and the Geek contestant, is accused of murdering her boyfriend Julian Story at the pair's Port Lincoln unit around midnight on June 17.
Police allege she also dismembered Mr Story's body, removing his head. The skull was found in walking trails between Slipway Rd and Hindmarsh St on the eastern edge of Port Lincoln, South Australia. Ms Chesser was then allegedly captured on CCTV in the hours afterwards walking with a bag, dogs and dressed in heavy clothing.
She was arrested on June 19 and charged with murder and destroy human remains.
South Australian Police and SES volunteers fanned out across the town to search for Mr Story's missing remains in the days and weeks following the alleged murder, but the search was suspended last week.
But in a shock development, police announced on Thursday afternoon they believed they had found Mr Story's head.
A resident walking their dog found the skull and reported it to the authorities, police said.
'Preliminary investigations and phone calls to forensic science centre (indicate) the remains are most likely human, and I believe they are the remains of Julian Story,' Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said.
'To confirm this, those remains will be subject to further testing over the coming days.

Katie's friend, who did not wish to be named, said she was no longer worried she would 'stumble across it'.
Katie said the discovery would likely reignite interest among locals in the case, which has gripped the town over the past few weeks.
'It's going to go mental,' Katie said.
Ms Chesser's case has generated widespread interest because of her glamorous former life and the brutal nature of the alleged killing.
Greg, who has lived in Port Lincoln since the 1970s, said locals discussed the case regularly.
'It was a gruesome bloody incident,' he said, speaking before Thursday's discovery.
'This town, we've never had anything like that before.'
Harley Hozer, who lives across the road from the unit complex where Ms Chesser and Mr Story lived, said the allegations had 'shook the town'.
'It shook the town a little bit,' she told NewsWire.
'We've dealt with some crime before but nothing like this.
'It shocked me, that's for sure.'
Police cars and cops patrolled the entry points to the scrubland across Thursday, with police line closing off the area.
Detectives could be seen walking into the trails.
That same day, Ms Chesser appeared at Port Lincoln Magistrates Court at 9.30am on three separate matters.
Police allege she behaved in a disorderly manner at a tobacco store on Port Lincoln's Liverpool St and at the Port Lincoln Police station, both on February 14, 2025,
It is further alleged she assaulted a woman on November 1 last year.
It is listed as a summary offence, meaning it is considered a low level of offending.
She is also alleged to have assaulted a police officer on June 20 this year, one day after she was arrested for the alleged killing of Mr Story. The 34-year-old woman appeared via AVL from James Nash House, a psychiatric facility, where she greeted the magistrate and answered questions for the first time in court.
She sported a shaved head and wore a blue sweater and greeted Magistrate Patrick Hill with a 'hello'.
Justin Slater, a solicitor with the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, represented her in court.
He told Mr Hill he had ordered 'reports' into the charges.
'We are doing our own reports in relation to these matters,' he said.
He asked Mr Hill to adjourn matters until a charge determination had been made for Ms Chesser's more serious allegations and Mr Hill agreed to the request, setting December 18 at Port Lincoln for the next hearing.
When asked if she understood her hearing would be adjourned, Ms Chesser replied: 'Yep'. The Boston Marine shipyards sit next to the Hindmarsh St and Slipway Rd scrubland. Mr Slater declined to comment on the charges or Ms Chesser's condition after the hearing.
Thursday's hearing marked the second time Ms Chesser had fronted court following her first appearance at Adelaide Magistrates Court last month on the murder and destroy human remains charges.
Those matters are listed to be heard in Adelaide on December 12.
Mr Story was a Port Lincoln local, while Ms Chesser had only recently moved to the area from Queensland.
She starred in the second series of the hit reality TV show Beauty and the Geek in 2010, finishing in second place.
She has also worked as a model for a range of brands including Target and appeared in men's magazines including Ralph and FHM, a profile for her on Star Now states.
Her Instagram and Facebook social media profiles are filled with racy and glamorous images.
A funeral service for Mr Story is expected next week.

Major update after kids killed in crash

A man who was allegedly street racing with another vehicle for 8km before it crashed, killing two young boys in Sydney's south, has been found unfit to stand trial. Adam Yurun, 24, was allegedly racing Jimmy Martin Brito, 33, at the time of the crash, with the pair allegedly reaching dangerous speeds of up to 140km/h in an 80km/h zone along the Grand Parade in Brighton Le Sands in August 2023. As Brito's car approached Monterey, he lost control, with the car crashing into a tree and killing two children aged 9 and 10 who were inside the car, while a nine-year-old girl survived with minor injuries. Mr Yurun was arrested weeks after the incident and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, aiding or abetting manslaughter, and failing to stop after the crash. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Adam Yurun has pleaded not guilty to a string of charges relating to the horror crash that killed two young brothers. NewsWire / John Appleyard Credit: News Corp Australia The two young boys were killed on impact when Jimmy Brito's car hit a tree. Credit: News Corp Australia Judge Julia Baly SC deemed that Mr Yurun was unfit to stand trial in a hearing at the Downing Centre District Court on Monday. Judge Baly quoted expert reports that outlined details of Mr Yurun's ongoing 'significant cognitive deficits'. 'I am well satisfied the accused suffers from a cognitive impairment and is unfit to be tried,' she told the court. Among reasons outlined by experts as to why Mr Yurun man would not be fit to stand trial were intellectual disability, significant deficits in reasoning and memory as well as severe anxiety and depression. Judge Baly citied the Crown case briefly and told the court that Mr Yurun allegedly engaged in a street race with Brito on August 25, 2023 at Monterey. 'It is alleged the accused initiated that race,' she said. The street race is alleged to have continued for about 8km, and at one point both vehicles were driving at the same speed almost beside each other, Judge Baly said. Brito then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, killing the two young boys on impact. Mr Yurun allegedly did not stop at the crash scene but instead drove away, later flagging down a police officer and advising them of the crash. 'The accused did not leave his name with that cop,' Judge Baly said. 'The accused did not come forward despite publicity and being aware he was wanted by police.' Mr Yurun's bail is to continue. His matter will return to court on August 15 for a mention to fix a date for a special hearing. It comes just months after Brito was sentenced over the fatal crash. In March, he was sentenced to a non-parole period of eight years, with a head sentence of 11 years and six months. He pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter by criminal negligence and one of causing bodily harm by misconduct. Brito was the second person sentenced so far over the fatal crash. Last year, Bondi real estate agent Raquel Borg was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order and community service for 'concealing' the crash. She was told during sentencing that her conduct was 'shameful'.

Group's ‘deplorable' Palestine protest act

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has slammed the 'deplorable' actions of a group of protesters who burned the Australian flag during a pro-Palestine rally at the weekend. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Melbourne in support of Palestine, calling for an end to the humanitarian crisis that has gripped the Gaza Strip for months. A planned crossing of the King St Bridge was stopped by police in riot gear – leading to confrontations and protesters splintering off and heading back to their starting point at the State Library. Extraordinary scenes emerged on the Spencer St bridge after some protesters stopped on the side of the road. NewsWire / Josie Hayden Credit: News Corp Australia Photos and footage at the scene capture the masked demonstrators burning the Australian flag and spray-painting 'Abolish Australia' on the road. Some broke out into chants of 'Death, death, death to the IDF' – referring to the Israeli Defence Force. Speaking on the Today show on Monday, Ms Allan condemned the incident. 'It's deplorable, it's a deplorable action' she told the program. Ms Allan reiterated the rest of the protest was 'peaceful' and there were no arrests. The massive group were blocked from crossing the King St Bridge. NewsWire / Josie Hayden Credit: News Corp Australia She said it was 'completely cowardly' to turn up to protests while masked, as it could 'only signal the intent'. Footage from Channel 9 captured the group disrupting traffic – one furious woman on her way to hospital getting out of her car to give them a spray. It is not clear whether the group are associated with the Palestine Action Group, which organised the protest along the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The group has been contacted for comment. Australia has no law that specifically criminalises the burning of the national flag. In NSW, historic scenes emerged on Sunday as almost 100,000 demonstrators peacefully marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge after attempts to block the protest failed in court. Protesters crossed the bridge about 2pm, chanting 'free, free Palestine' and waving placards. Ms Allan said the majority of the protest was 'peaceful'. NewsWire / Josie Hayden Credit: News Corp Australia NSW Police were on scene to keep the peace after their attempt to stop the demonstration – on the grounds it would endanger public safety – failed. At 3pm, they issued an urgent request for protesters to stop the march on safety fears, citing a possible 'crush' at the northern end of the bridge. 'Participants have been asked to stop proceedings across the bridge to avoid a crowd crush at the northern end of the harbour bridge,' the police said in what they called a 'protest safety intervention'. 'Once the procession has come to a halt, protesters will be asked to turn around and walk back toward Wynyard to avoid a risk of injury due to the huge number of people taking part. 'Police believe the safest route back is to walk back across the bridge given the huge numbers to avoid overwhelming the public transport system and a potential crowd crush scenario.' The rally otherwise proceeded peacefully and without any significant incidents. Famous faces joined in the protest, including former NSW Labor titan and former foreign affairs minister Bob Carr, soccer icon Craig Foster and Julian Assange. Boxer Anthony Mundine and journalist Antoinette Lattouf were also spotted in the crowd.
