'Should Have Been Awarded Ballon d'Or...': Barca Star Makes Big Claim On Lionel Messi
Former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has said that his one-time teammate Lionel Messi should have been awarded the Ballon d'Or every year and he was a game-changing player for his team and hence, deserved the coveted trophy every time he was nominated.
After his stellar rise at such a young age, Lamine Yamal has already earned comparisons to Barcelona's greatest ever footballer, Messi.
Fabregas has hailed Yamal as a wonderful talent, but insisted that Messi was on a different level. He added that Yamal could reach the latter's level if he continues his progress.
'The only player I've seen who should have been awarded Ballon d'Or every year was Leo [Messi]. Right now, maybe [Lamine Yamal] isn't there yet, but I think if he continues at this level and keeps progressing, he could also reach that level of being so, so dominant in that great trophy," Fabregas was quoted as saying by Stadium Astro English on Dailymotion.
'Leo, win or lose, was the best, but every three days, he scored two goals and made the difference. He was a dominant player in every aspect. From here on, Lamine is very good, very young and he'll have to keep improving, because I understand that this will only be the beginning for him," Fabregas added.
Messi isn't just Barcelona's greatest footballer ever, but one of the best players to have ever graced the game as well.
Barcelona, who won a Spanish league and cup double, are represented by four footballers in the Ballon d'Or nomination list including the youngest, Yamal, who has just turned 18 and the oldest, 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski.
Napoli are rewarded for winning Italy's Serie A with one selection, Scott McTominay, who becomes the first Scottish nominee since Ally McCoist in 1987.

Obviously that provided me with some calm, knowing it comes from someone who spent six years here, with his family. Getting references (from others) about how well the club and country functions in terms of football, always makes a positive impact in ensuring there is peace of mind when you sign here,' said Moreno. At Goa, Moreno replaced club captain Odei Onaindia , someone who hardly put a foot wrong in the two years that he spent at the club. Whether on or off the field, the Spanish defender always led by example. Moreno is experienced enough to know what's expected of him. He's getting into the groove but admits he was taken aback when he first set foot on Indian soil. 'Given such a wide contrast between the culture and people in the two countries, it does take a little bit of time to adapt,' said Moreno. 'During the first couple of days, there was a little bit of shock seeing the amount of poverty that there was around, the demeanour of people and how they interact with you on a day-to-day basis. I've been here for a month now and able to adapt, understand people, and their customs. The more time I spend here, the more I enjoy it.' On the field, Moreno has been pleasantly surprised with the domestic players catching his eye during pre-season. 'It's a good level to work and then move forward. I think, as foreigners, we need to do more; not just the coaches but as players too. We are coming here not only to play but also pass on whatever we have learned (at a higher level) to the players and everyone around us,' said Moreno.

Spanish football could finally cross the Atlantic after the Royal Spanish Football Federation approved a request for Barcelona and Villarreal to play their December LaLiga match in Miami – a move nearly a decade in the making. The RFEF board gave the green light on Monday for the teams' matchday 17 game to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20 in the first step towards the competition playing an official match abroad for the first time in its history. The proposal now heads to European soccer's governing body UEFA before requiring final approval from FIFA – the last hurdle in LaLiga President Javier Tebas' American dream. 'At its meeting on 11 August 2025, the RFEF Board of Directors received a request from Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona to play their match on matchday 17 of the first division in the United States,' RFEF said in a statement. '… the Royal Spanish Football Federation will submit the request to UEFA to begin the process for subsequent authorisation by FIFA for the match to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December 2025 …' LaLiga has been pursuing their transatlantic vision for almost a decade, emulating the strategy employed by the NFL and NBA to establish themselves in other markets. Tebas' first attempt came in the 2018-19 season with a proposed Girona-Barca match in the U.S. that never materialised. A planned Villarreal-Atletico fixture for 2019-20 also fell through, with the matter ending up in the courts after the RFEF refused authorisation. The courts sided with the Spanish Federation, then under Luis Rubiales, who was sacked in 2023 for kissing team player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth celebrating Spain's women's World Cup victory in Sydney. There was another near-miss last season, with a Barcelona-Atletico match almost proceeding before LaLiga pulled back at the last minute to better structure the project. Now, with regulatory barriers cleared and internal conflicts resolved, the Villarreal-Barca clash appears poised to finally deliver Spanish football's long-awaited American adventure.
