An EV Expert Thinks Fast Charging Is Overrated. Here's Why It's OK to Take Your Time Powering Back Up.
A look at recent automotive news will show you that EV manufacturers are slashing charging times in an effort to compete with the amount of time you would spend at a gas station. Andrew Cornelia, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, called this into question on a recent episode of Inside EV's Plugged-In podcast, claiming that many automakers could be overreaching.
And he may have a point.
We recently reported that BYD, a Chinese automaker, had laid out plans for a 1,000 kW charging solution that would effectively quadruple the amount of electricity that any Tesla model can currently accept. In theory, it sounds great. We always welcome new technology, and so does Cornelia, but he has some very interesting insight about how we should approach juicing up EVs.
Tesla's 3rd-generation Superchargers can supply up to 250 kW of power, able to add approximately 175-200 miles of range in 15 minutes. With Tesla and many other automakers continuing to steadily slash charging times, Cornelia says we could be closer to the Goldilocks zone than we think. He says that charge times of 10, even 12 minutes, would be perfectly acceptable given the time that motorists tend to 'dwell' at the gas station.
We car enthusiasts like to think we're pretty economical with our time at the gas station, but let's face it, we're actually not. While it may only take four minutes to fill up with fuel, that's only the amuse bouche of gas station amenities. Most of us might need to go inside and use the facilities, and maybe even snag a beverage and a snack if we're on an extended road trip. Some gas stations will even have more substantial food options like sandwiches or even fast food chains if you're especially lucky.
After all is said and done, it's pretty easy to find yourself at the gas station for longer than 10 minutes. Just whatever you do, don't park at the pump if you have to venture inside for any accoutrement. Nobody wants to wait for you to complete your weekly grocery shop when they're just looking to top up with fuel.
Cornelia noted that rather than going for outright speed, the charging experience should match the dwell time—adding that there are rarely scenarios where uber-fast charging makes sense. For this exact reason, Mercedes is laying plans to build its upcoming charging stations at points of interest like Starbucks and even Buc-ee's, a Southern chain of mega gas stations.
All this talk against ultra-fast charging doesn't mean that Mercedes-Benz isn't committed to optimizing fast charging for those who need it. Far from it. Many of us don't have access to a garage that would allow us to slowly add range overnight. Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging still plans to offer 400 kW charging stations, with more than enough muscle to juice up almost any EV in mere moments. For context, Tesla's 4th-generation Superchargers won't be much better, quoting a 500 kW output.

Elon Musk says Tesla robotaxi rides in Austin 'tentatively' set to begin June 22
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that his company's robotaxi service is "tentatively" set to launch in Austin, Texas, on June 22. In a post on X, Musk indicated that he's flying from Los Angeles to Austin for the kickoff, which he'd previously said would be sometime in June. When a commenter asked when public rides will start, Musk said the current plan is for June 22, and that the first ride from the factory to a customer's house will take place on June 28. "We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift," Musk wrote. Earlier on Tuesday, Musk shared a video on X showing that Tesla was testing driverless vehicles on the roads of Austin without a human safety supervisor behind the wheel. The eight-second clip showed the latest version of the Model Y SUV, painted black with a white "Robotaxi" graffiti-style logo painted on it, navigating an intersection and pausing to allow pedestrians to traverse a crosswalk. Musk recently told CNBC's David Faber that Tesla will start with a very small rollout, including about 10 to 20 of its robotaxis, with a new, "unsupervised" version of the company's FSD or "Full Self-Driving" technology installed. The tests will involve the Model Y, not the futuristic looking CyberCab that Tesla plans to produce next year. Musk said Tesla will "geofence" the service, limiting where the robotaxis can initially operate, and that employees will remotely monitor the fleet.

U.S., China reach "framework" to activate Geneva trade deal
The U.S. and China have agreed on a "framework" to implement a trade deal struck last month, pending approval from both countries' leaders, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Tuesday. Why it matters: Progress on trade peace with China, particularly if it resolves the issue of crucial Chinese rare earth minerals exports, would be a boon to an economy and markets that have struggled for months with the impact of President Trump's tariff program. Catch up quick: After a series of tit-for-tat retaliations in April, the world's two largest economies effectively had a trade embargo in place, with 145% U.S. tariffs crushing imports from China. The sides announced a trade deal that included a 90-day pause on most of those tariffs on May 12 after a weekend of high-level talks in Geneva. Only days later, the U.S. issued global restrictions on the use of certain Chinese chips from Huawei Ascend, saying they were developed in violation of U.S. export controls. The Chinese reacted furiously, and soon there were reports the government was restricting exports of the rare earth materials needed for hundreds of the world's most important high-tech products. The U.S. subsequently retaliated with a move to restrict and withdraw visas for Chinese students. Where it stands: Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke for 90 minutes last Thursday about trade issues, and agreed to high-level talks immediately. That led to this week's meeting in London. "We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus," Lutnick told reporters in London Tuesday night after marathon trade talks, Bloomberg reported. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tuesday's deal would essentially get the May 12 deal back on track, including the lowered tariffs and the loosened Chinese restrictions on rare earths.
