How Ed Sheeran helped Dua Lipa win copyright lawsuit

Independent28-03-2025

Dua Lipa has won a lawsuit that claimed her song 'Levitating' copied the melody of a 1970s disco track.
Songwriters L Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer sued Lipa in 2022, alleging 'Levitating' infringed on the copyright of their songs 'Wiggle and Giggle All Night' (1979) and 'Don Diablo' (1980).
Judge Katherine Polk Failla determined the shared musical phrase was generic and not protectable under copyright law, referencing similarities to melodies used in operas by Mozart, Rossini, and the Bee Gees.
The judge cited Ed Sheeran 's 2023 victory in a similar case over his song 'Thinking Out Loud', which established that basic musical elements are generally not copyrightable.
Brown and Linzer's attorney plans to appeal the decision, which arrived five years after Lipa released her album Future Nostalgia, which featured 'Levitating'.

Four lucky players matched the five main and one star, but nobody matched all five and both the lucky stars. The jackpot prize had already been rolled over previously after the last draw failed to find a winner. The eye-watering sum is the largest prize the UK has seen. Read More on the Lottery NO LUCK! EuroMillions jackpot rolls over AGAIN as UK's biggest ever prize goes unclaimed Andy Carter, senior winners' adviser at Allwyn, said previously: "Tuesday sees the £208 million EuroMillions jackpot still up for grabs. "A win of this magnitude would create the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen - making a single UK winner instantly richer than the likes of Dua Lipa and Harry Kane while also landing them at the number one spot on the National Lottery's biggest wins list. "The EuroMillions jackpot is now capped, so any money that would have gone into increasing the jackpot now boosts prizes in the next winning prize tier, meaning that we could see multiple UK players banking huge prizes for matching just the five main numbers and one Lucky Star." In the previous week's draw the main EuroMillions winning numbers were 20, 21, 29, 30, 35 and the Lucky Stars were 02, 12. One UK ticket-holder became a millionaire after matching five main numbers and one Lucky Star, winning £2.02million. No players won the £500,000 Thunderball jackpot by matching the five Thunderball numbers, 03, 14, 31, 32, 34, and the Thunderball number 06. EuroMillions jackpot winner Frances Connolly reveals surprising first item she bought with £114m jackpot It comes after an anonymous UK ticket holder won the existing record jackpot of £195million on July 19 2022. Just two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, bagged £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10. The UK's third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177million jackpot on November 26 last year. It came after 11 millionaires were made on the National Lottery draw in just one week in 2024. One lucky Brit won a cool £33million with their Euromillions ticket. Another ticket, which was snagged in the UK, matched all five main numbers and two Lucky Stars. It came just weeks after two players from the same county scooped £1m each. This year, the largest win was seen in January with £83million. A previous EuroMillions lottery winner, who scooped an eye-watering £107million jackpot, has revealed why he went public with the news. Neil Trotter bagged the whopping prize money and was faced with a huge decision whether or not to remain anonymous. The 45-year-old chose to splash the cash and filled his driveway with a Jaguar and a Porsche - before upgrading their parking spaces to a luxury mansion. But, Neil explained it can be tricky to go public because of pressure to provide people with money. However, he was overjoyed to buy his sister a house, and help out family and friends privately. He told the BBC: "It was quite tricky but I don't really see that there's any option [other] than to go public. "If you want to live the dream - which is have the house, the money and spend it, you've got to go public. "People have said in the past they would hide the money, I think £170million is going to be impossible to hide. "This is the lake that I bought and the big house and I'm living my dream." But he did previously admit he has been hounded by people making up claims to snap up his cash. He said: "I have had loads of people contact me on Facebook, I've probably got about four million kids in this country. "Everyone wants a bit of money." Elsewhere, a lucky couple thought they'd only bagged £2.60 on the lottery - but soon discovered they had scooped the £61million jackpot. Richard and Debbie Nuttall, both 54, from Colne, Lancashire, took home the life-changing sum in the EuroMillions draw. The couple were enjoying a holiday in Fuerteventura, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, when they discovered the big win. Richard revealed they originally thought they had won £2.60, but then received another email telling the pair to check their account. 'I thought it was odd and there must be a glitch in the system to get a duplicate email but I logged in again to my National Lottery account to check," he explained. "We were totally stunned, it said we had won over £61million," said the winner.

How YOU can boost your chances of winning £210M on Euromillions today… from best numbers to luckiest places to buy

EXPERTS have revealed their top tips for punters looking to get their hands on the EuroMillions £208m jackpot prize - from where to buy your ticket to the numbers most likely to come up. Our lottery gurus have busted common myths and pointed out several key points to bear in mind ahead of tonight's draw, which is the largest the UK has ever seen. 2 Winners would become instantly richer than the likes of music giants Adele and Dua Lipa. Allwyn, operators of The National Lottery, has provided some crucial advice for Brits hoping to win hundreds of millions of pounds ahead of the 7.30pm EuroMillions deadline. It answered common questions, including choosing the optimum spot for buying tickets and the best way to choose your numbers. The British firm has given a rare insight into some of the previous winners, exposing their rituals and the stories behind their success. Where is the best place to buy my ticket? Simon Horne, Consumer Communications Manager at Allwyn, advised players to keep things personal when choosing where to buy a ticket. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "If I can offer some advice, it would be to buy your ticket where you feel lucky. "Some might prefer to go to their local shop and buy one from their friendly newsagent, maybe somewhere they've been going for the last few years. "Others might feel lucky sat in the bath, if that's the case, go and buy your ticket online sat in the tub. "It's really personal and up to players to decide where they might get that extra little bit of luck. "We look after so many previous winners and we hear some amazing stories about how they've played their lucky numbers. "Many of us have these little rituals which we think can bring us a little bit of fortune." Simon told how one winner had picked up a ticket from his own corner shop after a shift and became a millionaire overnight. Will picking random numbers boost my odds? In terms of numbers, Simon added: "Players should not rule out any set of numbers. "Just because we intuitively think close numbers like 1,2,3,4,5 won't come out, they have the same chance. "We've had winners in the past who have won by choosing numbers that mean something to them. "Anniversaries and birthdays are very common and they might be lucky for you. "But some also like to choose a random selection, like number plates on the motorway "Every set of numbers has as much chance of coming out because this is a random draw. "Players need to go with their gut. Do not rule anything out." Is it actually worth buying more tickets? You don't buy a ticket, you won't win the raffle. Simon pointed to the fact that anyone who buys a ticket is in with a chance. Although it means you'll have to share your winnings, pooling your luck will increase your chances of scooping some cash. The same goes for buying multiple tickets yourself - but this way you only have to pay for one. And the odds become much more favourable for every additional ticket you purchase. He said: "From the raw statistical point of view, if you buy ten tickets, you have ten chances in the draw. "It's why some people prefer to play as a syndicate, with other people. "You have statistically more chance as a group - we know people like to play together and it's nice to be part of a group "They capture people's imaginations and it can be a really nice way for people to play and be more social "We have lots of syndicates who win and the shared joy comes regardless of who it's with, whether that's work, pals or family. "Just make sure you have an agreement signed beforehand!" Which numbers come up the most? Since September 2016, more than 900 draws have been made for the EuroMillions. The number 20 has been pulled out the most with 111 appearances. It was last drawn four days ago, in Friday's EuroMillions. The 20s have proved very popular in the past nine years or so - with 21, 23 and 29 all appearing more than 100 times. Completing the top five, 42 has been drawn 104 times. The most popular lucky stars numbers (between one and 12) and three and two, which have been picked 178 and 174 times respectively. The least popular number is 22, which has only been thrown up 65 times out of 908 chances.
