'Without respect for Russians ... ': Moscow after Zelenskyy-Trump talks; rejects call for 'long-term agreements'

Time of Indiaa day ago
Russia on Tuesday categorically said that there could not be any "long-term peace deal" with Ukraine without considering the security interests of Russians and "Russian-speaking people who live in Ukraine".
This comes a day after Zelenskyy-Trump talks, where the US president assured that he would talk to Vladimir Putin after the meet.
"Without respect for Russia's security interests, without full respect for the rights of Russians and Russian-speaking people who live in Ukraine, there can be no talk of any long-term agreements," Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told state TV channel Rossiya 24.
Lavrov further said any meeting between Russian and Ukrainian presidents regarding conflict resolution must be prepared "very thoroughly".
Trump had hinted at a possible trilateral meet if "everything worked out". "We're going to have a meeting. I think if everything works out well today we'll have a trilateral and I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that," he had said.
"Any contacts involving leaders must be prepared very thoroughly," Lavrov said.
Meanwhile, Trump has endorsed for a long-term peace agreement instead of a "two-year" one that would end up in "mess" again.

What happened at Zelenskyy-Trump meet?
The high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday signaled a new phase in Washington's engagement with Kyiv amid Russia's ongoing aggression. Trump assured that the United States would remain involved in Ukraine's 'future security' and emphasized that discussions were yielding 'substantial progress.' He framed the talks as part of a broader diplomatic push, noting his earlier meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his upcoming consultations with key European leaders.
Trump's remarks underlined his push for what he described as a 'long-term peace,' rejecting the notion of a temporary or fragile settlement that might unravel within a few years. Stressing that 'we are going to work with Ukraine, we are going to work with everybody,' Trump suggested that a trilateral meeting involving Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington could be possible if the day's talks proved productive. While he claimed that Putin wanted the war to end, he dismissed calls for a formal ceasefire, instead portraying his diplomatic approach as one aimed at securing a more durable resolution.
The presence of European leaders including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen lent additional weight to the White House gathering. Starmer described the talks as a 'historic step' for Ukraine and Europe's security, while Finnish President Alexander Stubb observed that more progress had been made in the last two weeks than in the previous three-and-a-half years.

‘Sudarshan Chakra, You Mean?': Russian Envoy's Hindi Twist On S-400 Question Stuns Everyone

New Delhi: A press briefing at the Russian Embassy turned lively on Wednesday (August 20) when Roman Babushkin, Charge d'Affairs of Moscow to New Delhi, chose a uniquely Indian term for Russia's most advanced air defence system. The question came from a journalist on whether India might consider air defence systems like Israel's Iron Dome. Babushkin smiled, leaned forward and asked in return, 'You mean Sudarshan Chakra?' He did not stop there. With an amused expression, he added, 'Next time ask in Hindi, I can answer better!' India has already purchased the S-400 missile system from Russia. In Indian defence circles, the system carries the tag of 'Sudarshan Chakra'. It came into the spotlight during the four-day clash with Pakistan in May, when the system intercepted enemy missiles and proved its battlefield effectiveness. The comment arrives at a time when the term Sudarshan Chakra has been freshly associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech. He spoke about Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious national project to build a homegrown air defence shield. The goal is to protect both civilian centres and strategic assets from aerial threats. Babushkin opened the briefing with a warm gesture toward his hosts. In clear Hindi, he declared, 'Shuruat karengey… Shree Ganesh Karengey!' The hall responded with laughter and applause. Throughout the interaction, the deputy chief of mission spoke warmly about India-Russia relations. He also turned sharply critical of American trade policy. Tariffs on India from Washington, he said, show 'a lack of trust and disrespect for national sovereignty'. He stressed that Moscow will remain open for Indian goods. If tariffs in the United States create obstacles, he said, Russia would 'welcome' Indian exports.

US trade war hits gamers; Sony raises PS5 prices amid global tariff fallout

Donald Trump 's sweeping tariffs on imported goods are rippling across the global economy, affecting industries from electronics to automobiles, and now, the video game sector is feeling the impact. Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a $50 price increase for all PlayStation 5 models sold in the United States, effective August 21, 2025, marking the first major US price hike for the console. Similar increases were implemented in Europe earlier this year, highlighting how trade policies are translating into higher costs for consumers worldwide. Under the new pricing, the standard PS5 will cost $549.99 (up from $499.99), the PS5 Digital Edition will rise to $499.99 (from $449.99), and the PS5 Pro will be priced at $749.99 (from $699.99). Accessories for the consoles will remain at current prices. The price hike comes amid ongoing economic pressures linked to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which began earlier this month on imported electronics, including Japanese-made products. Industry analysts estimate that these tariffs could cost Sony roughly $685 million annually. Sony cited the 'challenging economic environment' as the primary reason for the adjustment, reflecting a broader trend across the video game industry. Microsoft increased prices for its Xbox consoles and accessories in May 2025, while Nintendo raised prices for its Switch consoles in the US earlier this month, citing market conditions. Live Events Economists warn that if trade tensions continue, particularly with China, other consumer electronics may also see further price increases in the coming months. Gamers are advised to consider these developments when planning future hardware purchases.
