KOTA KINABALU (June 25): Tourism Malaysia Sabah, in collaboration with SabahTravel.com, an e-commerce travel marketplace platform, has launched the 'Explore Sabah' promotional campaign aimed at positioning Sabah as a premier travel destination in Malaysia.
The initiative aligns with the national Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign and leverages SabahTravel.com's digital reach to spotlight Sabah's diverse offerings to both domestic and international markets.
The campaign promotes over 400 curated travel experiences across Sabah, catering to diverse travel preferences. Highlights include island hopping and diving in Semporna, wildlife and river safaris in Kinabatangan, the Mount Kinabalu expedition, cultural village and heritage tours, as well as eco-retreats such as hilltop resorts and rainforest escapes.
Additionally, the campaign extends to Labuan, promoting activities such as sunset cruises and yacht charters, beachside retreats and snorkeling spots, WWII historical trails and memorial tours, and cultural attractions like the Labuan Museum and Chimney Tower.
Running from April 2025 to February 2026, the campaign offers up to 30% discounts for bookings made through the SabahTravel.com platform using the promo code XPLORE5. The platform allows users to instantly book multiple licensed travel experiences in one transaction with a secure payment gateway, offering flexibility and convenience to travellers.

Malaysia's tourism sector continues to demonstrate strong recovery. From January to April 2025, Malaysia recorded 13.4 million international arrivals, marking a 21.0% increase compared to the same period in 2024. China has emerged as the third-largest source market, following Singapore and Indonesia, and ahead of Thailand and India. With 1.4 million Chinese visitors recorded in the first four months of 2025 (a 37.8% increase from the previous year), Malaysia is on track toward achieving its target of 43 million international arrivals and generating RM283.8 billion in tourism receipts by the end of the year.
As part of the campaign's branding effort, Tourism Malaysia is also distributing official Visit Malaysia 2026 promotional vehicle stickers to licensed tour operators across Sabah. This symbolic gesture reinforces industry support and campaign visibility throughout the state.

China has been able to do little more than stand back and watch as war between its key partner Iran and Israel harms its hard-fought leverage in the Middle East, say analysts. Beijing has sought to frame itself as a mediator in the region, facilitating a 2023 rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran and portraying itself as a more neutral actor in the Israel-Palestinian conflict than its rival the United States. And its position as the largest purchaser of Iranian oil has served as a crucial lifeline for Teheran as its economy is battered by crippling international sanctions. But as Israel and Iran engaged in an unprecedented exchange of attacks and the US struck key targets on Iranian soil in the past week, Beijing has offered little beyond calls for de-escalation. "Beijing has offered Teheran no real help — just rhetoric that paints China as the principled alternative while it stays safely on the sidelines," said Craig Singleton, senior China fellow at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies think tank. China, he said, "sticks to rhetoric — condemnations, United Nations (UN) statements, talk of 'dialogue' — because over-promising and under-delivering would spotlight its power-projection limits". "The result is a conspicuously thin response that underscores how little real heft China brings to Iran when the shooting starts." China — alongside its "no limits" partner Russia — has long been a key backer of Iran, deepening ties in the wake of the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear deal in 2018. President Xi Jinping described relations as "strategic" in a 2023 meeting with Iran's then-president Ebrahim Raisi, and backed Teheran in its fight against "bullying". Liu Qiang, a retired Chinese senior colonel, was even more explicit in an article on the academic website Aisixiang this month. "Iran's survival is a matter of China's national security," said the director of the Academic Committee of the Shanghai International Centre for Strategic Studies. Beijing, he insisted, must take "proactive measures" in light of the recent war to ensure that Teheran "will not be broken by the military conflict" or "jointly strangled by the US and Israel". Analysts say Beijing's ties with Teheran are central to its efforts to ensure a regional counterbalance against both the US and Israel as well as the Gulf States. "Iran fits into Beijing's broader campaign to counterbalance US-led hegemony and to a lesser extent Nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) encroachment," said Tuvia Gering, non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub. Those efforts have gone into overdrive following blows to other "Axis of resistance" players since the start of the Gaza war — the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad's rule in Syria and the degradation of Hamas and Hizbollah in fighting with Israel. "Beijing has sought to prevent a total unravelling of Iran's regional role," said Gering, pointing to Chinese efforts to resurrect the nuclear deal. China condemned recent US strikes on Iran and called for parties in the region, "especially Israel", to de-escalate. And it has called for a political solution to help a declared ceasefire hold. Fighting last month between India and Pakistan saw Beijing furnish its long-time allies in Islamabad with state-of-the-art military gear. Analysts don't expect China to extend the same courtesy to its comrades in Teheran, given the risk of direct confrontation with the US. "Iran needs more than statements at the UN or missile components," said Andrea Ghiselli, a lecturer at the University of Exeter. "It needs air defences and fighter jets, which are things that China could provide but would require much time to be put into use — not to mention the likely extremely negative reaction by Israel and, especially now that it directly involves the US," he added. The US has urged China to use its influence on Iran to help deter its leaders from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas. But Ahmed Aboudouh, an associate fellow with the Chatham House Middle East and North Africa Programme, was sceptical that Beijing has the leverage. "China's position in the Middle East after this conflict" has been badly affected, he said.

China's premier warns global trade tensions ‘intensifying'

TIANJIN: Chinese Premier Li Qiang warned on Wednesday that global trade tensions were 'intensifying' as he addressed the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum. Officials including Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong are among those attending this week's gathering in the northern port city of Tianjin, known colloquially as the 'Summer Davos'. Li said the global economy was 'undergoing profound changes' -- a thinly veiled reference to swingeing tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. 'Protectionist measures are significantly increasing and global economic and trade frictions are intensifying,' Li added. 'The global economy is deeply integrated and no country can grow or prosper alone,' he said. 'In times when the global economy faces difficulties, what we need is not the law of the jungle where the weak fall prey to the strong, but cooperation and mutual success for a win-win outcome,' Li added. Beijing's number two official also painted a bullish picture of the Chinese economy, the world's second-largest, which has been beset by slowing growth and a lull in consumer spending. 'China's economy continues to grow steadily, providing strong support for the accelerated recovery of the global economy,' he said. Beijing, he added, was 'stepping up our efforts to implement the strategy of expanding domestic demand'. Li said this was 'promoting China's growth into a major consumption powerhouse based on the solid foundation of a major manufacturing powerhouse'. Beijing is eyeing growth this year of around five percent -- a target viewed as ambitious by many economists. Officials have since late last year rolled out a series of steps intended to boost spending, including key interest rate cuts and steps to encourage homebuying. But results have been varied, just as added pressure on trade from US tariffs threatens to hit the country's vast manufacturing sector. 'Me first' approach Li's speech at the WEF gathering sought to portray China as a staunch defender of a rules-based international trading system that is now under attack by the Trump administration. His comments echoed remarks the day before by President Xi Jinping to Singapore's Wong during a meeting in Beijing in which he called for the countries to resist a 'return to hegemony' and protectionism. Other leaders on Wednesday shared a sense of unease about being forced to choose between superpowers in a new historical period marked by increasing fragmentation and conflict. Wong told WEF President and CEO Borge Brende during a public discussion that governments should be cautious about 'abandoning the concept of economic integration'. 'Integration cannot guarantee peace, but I think it certainly gives us a better chance for peace than a 'me first' approach,' he said. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh struck a similar chord, pointing out that the United States is Vietnam's largest export market and China its largest source of imports. When asked about recent trade frictions, Chinh said his country needed to pursue a 'balanced' foreign policy that would allow it to be 'a friend of all countries'. 'We have a good balance but we also need to be prepared as things have gone topsy-turvy lately,' he added.
