Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport suspended operations for several hours Sunday after heavy rains flooded the capital and caused poor visibility, authorities said."Due to the heavy rainfall this afternoon and based on reports of low visibility... the aeronautical authority has ordered the suspension of landing and takeoff operations for the next 3 hours," the airport's official X account posted before 9:00 pm local time (0300 GMT)."This will allow for the removal of rainwater that has caused flooding, enabling the restoration of operational capacity," it said.Benito Juarez International Airport, one of the city's two international airports, is among Latin America's busiest, serving 45.4 million passengers in 2024.Sunday's rainfall flooded major roads in Mexico City, with water reaching up to 50 centimeters (19 inches) in some areas.The capital's government activated a purple alert - the highest level - for the central area of the metropolis of more than nine million inhabitants.Mexico experiences major storms every year, usually between May and November.In June, Hurricane Erick swept through southern Mexico, devastating coastal communities and leaving two people dead.In October 2023, Acapulco, a major port and beach resort in Guerrero, was pummeled by Hurricane Otis, a powerful Category 5 storm that killed dozens of people.Hurricane John, another Category 3 storm that hit in September last year, caused about 15 deaths.

Tropical storm Podul on Thursday dumped torrential rain on southern China, still reeling from record downpours last week, and disrupted hospitals, schools and courts in Hong Kong after tearing through Taiwan and leaving 143 people injured. The hearing of Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy advocate Jimmy Lai was cancelled after authorities put in place their highest-level 'black' rainstorm warning, as supporters queued under umbrellas outside the court. The government on Thursday announced 430 million yuan ($59.9 million) in fresh funding for disaster relief, taking the total allocated since April to at least 5.8 billion yuan. 'Authorities need to be extra ready,' said Chim Lee, a senior analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit. 'There's growing evidence that we're seeing more intense and slower-moving tropical cyclones. 'China's southern coast is set for economic disruptions of all kinds. Most institutions in the region are fairly well prepared, but there also seems to be a subtle northward shift in where cyclones reach their peak intensity – these places need to keep a sharper eye out.' Podul made landfall on the coast of China's southeastern province of Fujian at 00:30 local time (1630 GMT Wednesday), having weakened from a typhoon to a tropical storm after lashing Taiwan on Wednesday, where winds of up to 191 kph (118 mph) left one person missing and scores injured. But its residual vortex stands to wreak havoc in southern China, still reeling from the heaviest rains in generations last week, as it moves northwest at a speed of 30-35 km per hour (19-22 mph). Across Guangdong, 75,000 people were evacuated last week, as a record 622.6 mm (24.5 inches) of rain fell on Guangzhou, the provincial capital from August 2-6 – almost three times the average rainfall for the city in August – killing at least seven people. Hong Kong last week experienced its heaviest August rainfall since 1884 last Tuesday. Authorities in Guangdong's Meizhou closed all the highways on Thursday due to the downpour, state media reported, while the high-speed railway linking the high-tech hubs of Shenzhen and Hangzhou in eastern Zhejiang province, some 1,200 km (745 miles) away, was also suspended.

Typhoon Podul brings no major damage as it crosses Taiwan, heads for China
Taipei, Aug 13 (AP) Typhoon Podul crossed southern Taiwan, where authorities closed schools and government offices as heavy rain threatened more damage to agriculture in the island's southeast. No major damage was reported. The storm hit Taitung county on the east coast shortly after noon, moving across the south of the island at about 36 kilometres per hour. By 5:00 pm (0900 GMT) its centre was just off Taiwan's west coast, churning out into the Taiwan Strait and China, according to the Central Weather Administration. In China, the coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong recalled fishing boats to port and evacuated around 15,000 people living near the coast to shelters further inland. Taiwanese media reported one person missing on the east coast. Typhoons like Podul typically hit Taiwan's east coast hard before losing speed and strength as they pass over the Central Mountain Range before continuing toward the Chinese coast. Podul measured 120 kilometres across and was expected to broaden even while losing strength as the storm moved westward. The areas affected were well south of the capital, Taipei, along with Taiwan's main international airport and high-tech industrial base. Around a dozen flights that would have travelled south toward the path of the storm were delayed or cancelled. The counties and cities of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yunlin, Pingtung and Hualien on the east coast and the island group of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait were taking the brunt of the storm.
