Gadag: Chief minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate excavation work at the historic site of Lakkundi, which is eligible and has all attractions to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on Tuesday, said district minister HK Patil.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Patil said the CM will also visit the Lakkundi Open Archaeological Museum and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple before arriving in Gadag city. "Initiation of excavation at Lakkundi is a significant event. This will facilitate Lakkundi's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site," he said.
"The chief minister has promised necessary funding for the excavation, which will be conducted scientifically without financial hindrances.
The first phase will begin with excavation on the premises of the Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple. This will commence only after identifying the areas and obtaining approval," he said.
The villagers of Lakkundi voluntarily came forward for the exploration of artefacts, and more than 1,200 relics were found in the first campaign itself. Already, five households in Lakkundi agreed to vacate their homes for the excavation.
If 27 houses in Lakkundi are vacated, five temples will be clearly visible. Discussions were held with house owners regarding their relocation," the minister added.
"Later, he will participate in the centenary celebrations of the Karnataka Kuruba Association and the Karnataka Kuruba Cooperative Credit Society at Sri Swami Vivekananda Bhavan in Gadag, at 12:50pm. Later, at 3:30pm, he will inaugurate the GNTTF Institute on the Gadag Co-operative Industrial Estate premises. At 4:30pm, he will participate in the inauguration of the Gadag-Betageri Trade, Culture, and Exhibition Authority at the District Auditorium and unveil the concept of the 34-acre authority," Patil explained.

‘Didn't criticise Kumbh deaths': Siddaramaiah deflects Opposition's questions on Bengaluru stampede

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday sought to deflect the Opposition's questions about the Bengaluru stampede, saying he didn't criticise the UP government over the Maha Kumbh stampede. The Congress leader added that he will not justify the incident by comparing it to other tragedies. Eleven people died and 33 sustained injuries in the stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium during RCB IPL win celebrations. This remark from the state chief minister came after leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Congress government of "negligence" and "mismanagement." "Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. I did not criticise. If Congress criticises, then that is a different matter. Did I or the Karnataka government criticise?" the Karnataka CM said. "I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came," CM Siddaramaiah added further, as per ANI. The incident took place after a large number of fans gathered outside the stadium in hopes of catching a glimpse of the RCB stars. The team of Royal Challengers Bangalore was set to hold a victory procession to mark their first IPL title win in 18 years.

RCB victory parade stampede: Virat Kolhi expected ‘unreal' celebrations in Bengaluru, but Siddaramaiah says police didn't anticipate huge turnout

Following the tragic death of 11 Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah claimed that his government did not anticipate such a huge crowd. But RCBian Virat Kohli had expected, minutes after the team's maiden IPL triumph on Tuesday, that the celebrations would be 'unreal'. On Wednesday, 11 people including women died and 47 others were injured as RCB fans stampeded into Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium to catch a glimpse of the winners. Siddaramaiah said that neither police nor Karnataka State Cricket Association anticipated such a huge crowd. He said, 'The Chinnaswamy stadium accommodates 35,000 and we anticipated a few more thousands would turn up. But there were about 2-3 lakh people and one lakh had gathered near Vidhana Soudha.' However, the fans who turned up said that even they had predicted such a huge crowd, but the arrangements were poor. In a video shared by RCB on Instagram on Tuesday night after the match, Virat Kohli said, 'I am going to feel the real side of when we get to Bengaluru tomorrow and celebrate this with the city.' In the video, RCB cricketer Mayank Agarwal also went on to say the love and affection of Bengaluru towards Kohli was beyond his gauge. He said, 'In the next couple of days you will get to know it.' RCB, which has one of the biggest fan following in the world, waited for 18 years to clinch its first IPL title. The only time that Bengaluru had the experience of organising an IPL winning team celebration before was in 2024, when RCB women won the Women's Premier League (WPL) trophy. Mahesh Somanna, a cricket fan who was near the Chinnaswamy stadium, said that such a huge crowd was expected but there were not enough measures. 'As a RCB fan I will tell you, I was not surprised by the turnout but shocked by the preparations, both inside and outside the stadium. The crowd was never streamlined like how they do during New Year celebrations in Bengaluru. Though there were police in uniform they were outnumbered by the crowd,' he added. Another woman who had a free pass to enter the stadium said there was no security or protection for women. 'Despite having the pass, I had to fight to enter because the gate was overcrowded. Even inside the cricket stadium, I did not see much security for women and it was totally haphazard,' she added. A senior police officer who chose anonymity said the government was warned about unprecedented crowds by the Bengaluru city police. 'With intelligence inputs, the city police recommended that the celebration event be held on Thursday or Friday, but a senior politician in the government insisted on celebrating it on Wednesday,' the officer added.

Bengaluru Stampede: At Least 10 Dead, 24 Injured During RCB Victory Parade; CM Announces Ex-Gratia

New Delhi: At least ten people have died, while over 24 have been injured in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday (June 4). The death toll is feared to increase. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah has announced Rs 10 lakh as ex-gratia to the kin of the victims. 'A majority of those who lost their lives today are young people, both men and women. The government announces Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the victims. Free treatment to be provided to those injured. Even those who have taken treatment at private hospitals. Including out-patients, a total of 47 people have been injured,' he said, addressing the press outside Vidhana Soudha, which houses the state legislature. The stampede broke out during a victory parade outside the stadium, held to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's win in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday. According to The Hindu , the Bowring Hospital close to the stadium confirmed six deaths, while officials at the Vydehi Hospital said that of the 15 injured persons it received, four had died. One more person passed away the Manipal Hospital, it added. Speaking to the media, Karnataka deputy chief minister D.K. Shivakumar said, 'The crowd here is uncontrollable. Even though the police have made efforts to manage the people thronging the stadium, it has been difficult.' Fans had gathered in large numbers near Gate 3 of the stadium, where the winning team was expected to arrive with the IPL trophy as part of its open-bus parade beginning from Vidhana Soudha, where they were felicitated by Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The report noted that the state traffic police was struggling to ensure the smooth movement of vehicles in the central business district area due to large crowds. The Bengaluru Metro too saw an unprecedented footfall of passengers, according to the Hindustan Times. Reports also stated that t he initially planned open-bus parade to welcome the team to Bengaluru was cancelled due to massive traffic congestion. Shivakumar, speaking to reporters, also said that they had cancelled the use of an open vehicle. 'Due to over crowded metro stations, traffic congestion and the overwhelming public turnout, we decided not to continue with the event as originally scheduled … That's why we avoided using the open vehicle for the players and wrapped up the program within ten to 15 minutes to ensure safety,' he said, as quoted by The Hindu . Meanwhile, opposition leaders are raising questions over mismanagement. ' The primary reason for this massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures. The state government, led by @INCKarnataka , must take full responsibility for this disaster,' said former chief minister of Karnataka, H.D. Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular). Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the incident on X. 'The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,' his office quoted him as saying. Lok Sabha leader of opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences. 'In this hour of grief, I stand with the people of Bengaluru. The Karnataka government must provide all possible support and relief to the affected families,' he said on X. He continued: 'This tragedy is a painful reminder: no celebration is worth a human life. Every safety protocol for public events must be reviewed and strictly enforced – lives must always come first.'
