S. Korea, US Marines hold joint infantry drills
Some 440 troops from South Korea's 2nd Marine Division and the US 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force took part in the drills launched on March 3 and conducted in training facilities in Gimpo and Ganghwa, northwest of Seoul, according to the Marine Corps.
In the first segment of the training, Marines from both sides were assigned to combined platoons to strengthen their interoperability and sharpen their practical capabilities through freeform maneuvering combats, it said.
They participated in mountain warfare training for the second segment, which involved 3-kilometer speed marches and obstacle courses.
The latest exercise was held as part of the regular Korea Marine Exercise Program, designed to strengthen combined readiness between the allies. (Yonhap)

British warships arrive in S. Korea for Indo-Pacific mission
Two British naval vessels have docked in South Korea as part of a regional tour aimed at enhancing security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, the British Embassy in Seoul said Tuesday. The frigate HMS Richmond arrived at a port in the southern city of Busan earlier in the day, while the logistical support ship RFA Tidespring docked in Busan the previous day, according to the embassy. The Tidespring was built in 2016 by the major South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, now known as Hanwha Ocean. The visit is part of the Royal Navy's eight-month deployment across the Indo-Pacific, known as Operation Highmast, which is intended to promote maritime security and strengthen defense ties, the embassy said. Crews plan to take part in various cultural and diplomatic activities during their two-week stay. The embassy noted that the port call underscores Britain's commitment to deepening defense cooperation with South Korea and enhancing military interoperability. In addition, the Royal Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the HMS Prince of Wales, is scheduled to conduct an aerial capability demonstration in South Korean waters next month, it added. (Yonhap)

Seoul to host UNC veterans, families to pay tribute to Korean War service
Veterans of the United Nations Command forces who fought in the 1950-53 Korean War and their families are to visit South Korea at the invitation of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the ministry said Wednesday. The visit, scheduled from Thursday to Monday, is part of a commemoration of the UN Forces Participation Day, observed annually on July 27. A total of 55 participants are attending, including six veterans, 21 bereaved family members and 26 leaders of veterans associations from the 15 countries that participated in the war under the UNC flag. Throughout the three-year conflict, more than 1.9 million personnel from 22 countries served under the UNC flag, providing combat, medical and logistical support. As part of the event, the South Korean government will posthumously award the country's highest military honor, the Order of Taegeuk Military Merit, to the late US veteran Fred McGee. Then a US Army Pfc. McGee served from January to November 1952 as a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. Even after his squad withdrew, McGee remained behind to assist in evacuating the wounded and dead bodies, according to the ministry. His daughter Victoria Seacrest is visiting Korea on his behalf, as McGee passed away in 2020 at the age of 89. Among the veterans visiting is 97-year-old Harold Simlak, the oldest in the group. He served from April to December 1951 as a US Army private first class in the 1st Cavalry Division and fought in the Battle of Hill 328 near Waegwan-eup, North Gyeongsang Province. Other visiting veterans include two Americans: Malcolm Williamson, who served from December 1950 to October 1954 as a petty officer aboard the USS Thompson, and Roy Hakuo Yamashiroya, who served from March to July 1953 as a private first class in the 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division of the US Marine Corps. Also attending are Clifford Pearson from the United Kingdom, who served from March 1953 to August 1956 as a sergeant in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers; Alphonse Martel from Canada, who served from November 1952 to November 1953 as a private in the Royal 22nd Regiment; and Estifanos Yimam from Ethiopia, who served in 1954 at guard posts along the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone. The ministry has also invited 94-year-old South Korean Lim Chang-soo, who sheltered US Army Master Sgt. Ralph Kilpatrick for 77 days after he was separated from his unit during a retreat from the Geumgang defensive line in Daejeon in 1950. Lim will be presented with a plaque of appreciation. 'The government and the people will always remember and honor the sacrifice and dedication of the heroes who risked their lives to defend the Republic of Korea,' said Veterans Minister Kang Jung-ai. 'Through a range of international veteran support programs, Korea will continue to strengthen its solidarity with the countries that contributed troops to the United Nations Command,' she added.

Muan crash briefing canceled upon bereaved families' protest
A government briefing on the engine investigation into the deadly Muan plane crash in December was abruptly canceled on Saturday after protests from victims' families, a South Korean transport ministry official said. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport had scheduled the press conference for 3 p.m. at Muan International Airport to release findings on the aircraft's engine. The results were first shared privately with the bereaved families at around 2 p.m. Although the briefing was initially expected to last an hour, discussions extended beyond two hours as families strongly objected to the findings. Some entered the press room in protest, prompting the ministry to cancel the event. 'The families said the outcome differed from their expectations and expressed concern that disclosing only part of the investigation could be misleading,' a ministry official told The Korea Herald. The families also insisted that no findings be made public until the full investigation is complete. They further demanded supporting data and documentation to substantiate the results, but the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, which is leading the probe, reportedly failed to provide detailed evidence or an explanation of the investigative process. The canceled briefing was expected to mark the first official update in the seven-month probe. On Dec. 29, 2024, Jeju Air flight 7C2216, en route from Bangkok, crashed while attempting to land at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province. Of the 181 people on board, only two survived. The cause of the crash remains unconfirmed. DNA traces believed to be from Eurasian teal ducks were found in both engines, fueling speculation that a bird strike may have triggered engine failure--a leading theory in the investigation. The ministry said it will leave it to the investigation board to decide whether and how to release the findings through other channels.
