EAM Jaishankar Holds Bilateral Talks With Cyprus Counterpart, Lauds Anti-Terrorism Cooperation

India.coma day ago

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar held talks with Cyprus' Foreign Affairs Minister, Constantinos Kombos, to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations. He also thanked Cyprus for its support in India's fight against terrorism.
This meeting coincides with India's ongoing diplomatic outreach campaign as part of Operation Sindoor, where Indian MPs are visiting various countries to highlight India's efforts to combat Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism.
Taking to X, the External Affairs Minister wrote: "Warm conversation with FM @ckombos of Cyprus. Discussed strengthening our bilateral partnership as well as India-EU ties. Appreciate the support consistently extended by Cyprus in combating terrorism."
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Cyprus in 1962, bilateral relations between both nations have been traditionally very close and friendly.
Besides, Cyprus has supported India on several crucial issues, including India's election to the UNSC, the India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, the NSG and the IAEA, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) notes. Cyprus also supported India's post-Shakti series of nuclear tests, and on the issues of the Pulwama terrorist attack, says the MEA.
There have been several goodwill gestures between India and Cyprus, marking their special regard and gratitude for each other. The MEA notes India has named an avenue in Delhi in honour of Archbishop Makarios, the first President of Cyprus.
"Cyprus issued two postal stamps on the occasion of the Centenary Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 1970," it says.
Apart from that, a bust of the 'Father of the Nation', Mahatma Gandhi, was installed in the garden of the Parliament of Cyprus in 1972, and the avenue in front of the bust was named 'Jawaharlal Nehru Avenue' in 1983. In a heartwarming gesture underlining the close relations between the two nations, in 2019, Cyprus issued a commemorative stamp on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.
Taking into consideration the close ties between India and Cyprus, the latest conversation between S. Jaishankar and Constantinos Kombos holds importance, as the subject of terrorism was also touched upon during the talks, with the Indian minister acknowledging the West Asian nation's constant support in combating terrorism.

Amit Shah accuses Bengal CM of opposing Op Sindoor: ‘Killing of terrorists troubling Mamata Banerjee'

Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of 'opposing' Operation Sindoor. "Under Operation Sindoor, we conducted a deep strike 100 kilometers into Pakistan, targeting their headquarters. Numerous terrorists were killed, but this seems to trouble Mamata Ji" Shah said while addressing party leaders and workers in Kolkata. Shah also reiterated that Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack – was not over. "...Mamata Banerjee may favour the Pakistani terrorists as much as she wants, but I want to tell her that this is PM Modi's government and Operation Sindoor is not yet over. Anyone who dares anything will be given a proper answer..." he said, according to ANI news agency. Shah also alleged that Mamata Banerjee was opposing Operation Sindoor to appease the Muslim vote bank. Mamata Banerjee had recently accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of trying to exploit Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack – for political gains. During Sunday's speech, Amit Shah said that the communal violence in Murshidabad in April was 'state sponsored' and the accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of opposing the deployment of BSF. 'The MHA kept on insisting about the deployment of BSF during the Murshidabad riots, but the TMC government didn't allow it to happen so that the violence could continue,' Shah alleged, according to PTI. He also alleged that the TMC government in the state was facilitating illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. 'We requested land to build a fence along the border, which would effectively prevent infiltration from Bangladesh into India. However, you have deliberately avoided providing the required land, allowing unchecked infiltration to continue and thereby expanding your vote bank,' Shah said. 'It is evident that your priority lies in securing your nephew's political succession rather than addressing the pressing issue of border security,' he added.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 81 'anti-nationals' have been arrested till now for 'sympathising' with Pakistan following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Phalgam. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the latest arrests included a person named Mohammed Dilbar Hussain from Sonitpur and another named Hafizur Rahman from Kamrup. 'Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking action,' he added on X. The attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 17 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Since the attack, the BJP government in Assam has been arresting persons accused of 'defending Pakistan' through social media posts or public remarks. 81 Anti-Nationals are now behind bars for sympathising with Pak | #Update | 1 June 1️⃣ @SonitpurPolice arrested Md Dilbar Hussain 2️⃣ @KamrupPolice arrested Hafizur Rahman Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking actions. — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) June 1, 2025 On April 24, Sarma had said that the state would take action against anyone directly or indirectly defending the 'horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam'. This came after Opposition All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for claiming that the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack may have been the results of conspiracies by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Islam got bail in the sedition case on May 14, but was detained again under the National Security Act on the same day, PTI reported. The Act allows for long periods of detention without trial and suspends important rights of the accused person, including the right to legal representation and immediate information about the cause of the arrest.

Amit Shah accuses Mamata Banerjee of opposing Op Sindoor, Waqf Act to appease vote bank

Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a blistering attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee , accusing her of "opposing" Operation Sindoor and the Waqf Amendment Act to appease the Muslim vote bank. Shah, addressing party leaders and workers here, also alleged that the recent riots in Murshidabad were "state-sponsored". "To appease the Muslim vote bank, Mamata didi opposed Operation Sindoor.
