Jose Mourinho pays tribute to his Champions League-winning captain Jorge Costa
Reports in Portugal say the former centre-back, who was Porto's director of football, suffered a heart attack at the club's training ground.
'It's part of my history that goes,' an emotional Mourinho said at Fenerbahce's press conference ahead of their Champions League qualifier against Feyenoord in Rotterdam.
'You have captains, you have leaders. It's not about the armband, it's about what you represent.

'Jorge was one of these guys I used to say 'clean the garbage' and let the coach do his job as a coach and not as a leader of the dressing room.
'That's perfection for a coach when the captain does this work. Of course I'm very sad, but let's forget football.

'Let's focus on him, Jorge, a young guy and his kids that I met when they were really kids and now, of course, they are grown men.
'Of course I am very sad but I'm here because if he could speak with me now he would tell me, 'Come on, do your press conference and tomorrow play the game and win mister. Forget about me'.
'That would be Jorge. So that's what I am going to try to do. Do my job today, do my job tomorrow, and then cry after.'
Costa was a senior Porto player for 15 years between 1990 and 2005 and made 324 appearances for the club.
As well as the Champions League, Costa won the UEFA Cup and eight Primeira Liga titles at Porto. He retired in 2006 after spending the final year of his career at Standard Liege in Belgium.
Costa won 50 caps for Portugal and spent a season on loan at Charlton in the Premier League in 2001-02.
Porto posted on X: 'Jorge Costa has left us. One of us, a leader, a captain, a role model. A symbol of FC Porto. Thank you for being FC Porto until the end. Goodbye, Jorge Costa.'
Former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said: 'He was a fantastic person who always got his point across.
'Everyone respected him because of his ability. He was a great lad.'

NEWCASTLE GOT a worrying glimpse of life without Alexander Isak as they were held to a 0-0 draw in their Premier League opener at Aston Villa despite Ezri Konsa's dismissal. Villa defender Konsa was sent off for a professional foul on Anthony Gordon midway through the second half on Saturday. But Newcastle were unable to take advantage in a toothless display that showed why they are so desperate to keep hold of Isak. The Sweden striker was not involved against Villa after reportedly telling the club he wants to leave St James' Park to join Premier League champions, Liverpool. Isak, 25, was the subject of a rejected £110 million (€127 million) bid from Liverpool earlier in August. Isak, who helped Newcastle secure Champions League qualification and end their 56-year trophy drought last season, is reportedly refusing to train or play to force his way out of the club he joined from Real Sociedad in 2022. He did not take part in Newcastle's pre-season tour, training alone at his former club Sociedad instead. Isak has three years remaining on his Newcastle contract, and it is understood he will be fined for missing a competitive match this weekend. Gordon led the line in Isak's absence as the England winger started out of position in the centre of Newcastle's three-man attack. Anthony Elanga made his Newcastle debut after the winger's £55 million (€64 million) move from Nottingham Forest, while Malick Thiaw, a defender signed from AC Milan, was among the substitutes. Without Isak to power their attack, Newcastle were unable to make their territorial dominance count as Howe was left hoping for a swift resolution to the transfer saga, which could run until the window closes in September. Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa sees red as Newcastle draw blank without Isak
Premier League: Aston Villa 0 Nwecastle 0 Newcastle demonstrated how united they are without Alexander Isak but also how much they miss his goal power. Despite dominating this match, before and after Ezri Konsa was sent off for Aston Villa, Eddie Howe's men had to settle for a draw against the side they pipped for a Champions League place. Still hoping to buy Yoane Wissa from Brentford and having let the veteran Callum Wilson leave for free to West Ham, Newcastle played three wingers across their frontline and only brought on Will Osula, the one recognised central striker in their squad, in the 90th minute. Villa, whose fans vented their frustration at the Premier League for the profitability and sustainability rules that have curtailed deepening their squad this summer, survived a sluggish start to defend manfully for the final quarter of the game when they were a man down and earn their point. Isak's continued absence has not helped Newcastle and their fans saved their loudest chant of the day till after the final whistle. 'There's only one greedy bastard,' they sang in unison. And how committed were they and their team throughout this frenetic opening game. Much of the pre-match chatter was about the moves that have not happened. Villa were about to ease their PSR concerns by selling homegrown Jacob Ramsey to these opponents for an initial £39m, but have been restricted to signing backups, in Evann Guessand, the £26m Ivory Coast striker starting on the bench, and Marco Bizot, the Dutch goalkeeper handed a prompt debut as he deputised for the suspended Emi Martínez. Having won the Carabao Cup, their first trophy since 1969, and finished fifth in the Premier League to return to Europe's elite competition, this should have been a joyous close-season for Newcastle fans. Instead it has been overshadowed by the Isak saga. Eddie Howe has been obliged to admit that his leading striker's stance in attempting to force through a move to Liverpool did affect pre-season morale early on and that he could only consider players who wanted to play for Newcastle for selection. Well, the XI who started at Villa Park clearly did. They dominated this game and should have been ahead by half-time through any one of a plethora of good chances. Their ambition to play in Villa's half was signalled by Sandro Tonali playing for touch near the corner flag directly from kick-off. Within three minutes Anthony Elanga was sent clear by Tonali and forced Bizot into a fine save to his right. Even in Isak's absence, Newcastle had pace to burn across their frontline and Anthony Gordon, playing down the middle, headed over one cross by Harvey Barnes, who soon delivered to the far post for Elanga to slash goalwards a volley that was blocked. Villa barely had the chance to breathe at this stage. Bizot, signed from Brest, was obliged to show his mettle again as he got down low to his right to parry aside a 20-yard drive from Gordon, who was teed up, once more, by Barnes. Villa, defending deeply, were not getting close enough to their green-shirted opponents. It's not that Villa were especially poor, just that Newcastle were so much more intense. Nick Pope did not have a shot to save in the opening period. Villa's expected goals at half-time was precisely zero. Ollie Watkins, who had opened the scoring inside 40 seconds when Newcastle were dismissed 4-1 here in April, gave an outstanding display of forward running down the channels but Villa, apart from Morgan Rogers, simply could not get enough men supporting him. They were too knackered trying to match Newcastle's energy. Villa started the second half higher and brighter, and Boubacar Kamara should have done better than to head their first chance, from John McGinn's right-wing cross, straight at Pope. After Pope saved from Watkins, at the midpoint of the second half, with Villa finally territorially dominant, Elanga received the ball midway between his own 18-yard line and halfway. Gordon timed his acceleration perfectly and his direction of travel even better. He ran beyond the halfway line and Konsa just as Elanga released his pass and when the England defender grappled Newcastle's No 10 to impede his run in on goal, Craig Pawson had an easy decision to pull out his red card. Thereafter, this resembled a training game of attack versus defence. Villa slipped into a 4-4-1 formation and, with Tyrone Mings in the centre of everything, they sensed they could survive. Villa had won their previous nine games when starting with the former England defender. It is at least something from which both teams can build. ‘It's not in my hands, but he's contracted to us' – Eddie Howe says Alexander Isak could still play for Newcastle again
The 25-year-old Sweden international will not be involved in Saturday's Premier League opener at Aston Villa after telling the club he wants to explore his options this summer, with Liverpool having had a £110million bid for the player rejected. Head coach Howe, who believes Isak could yet be reintegrated back into the squad, has been diplomatic to date when asked about his star striker, but asked if he could see him playing for the Magpies before the end of the summer transfer window, he replied: 'As I sit here now, I don't know that. Alex will control that.' Howe's tacit admission that the Swede is refusing to play rather that having been banished to work alone in an effort to force his way out of the club he joined in a £63million switch from Real Sociedad during the summer of 2022 leaves the two parties in a difficult position. Isak has three years remaining on his contract at St James' Park, and it is understood he will be fined – the maximum penalty for a single offence is two weeks' wages – for missing a competitive match this weekend. Reports have suggested Liverpool will submit a second offer – their initial bid was £40m shy of Newcastle's valuation – but Howe is confident there is a way back for the player should no deal be struck. He said: 'Yes, I believe there is, but of course discussions and talks would have to take place in order for that to happen.'
