‘Escaped jaws of death': Survivors recall panic, crush at Mansa Devi temple

Time of India2 days ago
Haridwar: It was around 8.30 am on Sunday. Over 5,000 devotees were packed onto a narrow 5ft-wide pedestrian path leading to the Mansa Devi temple near Har Ki Pauri when panic swept through the crowd.
Within minutes, eight people lay dead and at least 28 were injured in a stampede triggered, according to survivors, by "rumours of live wires causing electrocution".
Sachin Saini from Uttar Pradesh's Rampur lost two cousins, Vipin (18) and Vicky Saini (19), in the chaos. "People started fleeing in fear after the rumours spread. Several fell to the ground and couldn't get up," he recalled.
Those who lived through the crush described a scene of confusion and terror.
Shambu Singh from Bihar had travelled with his friend Shakal Dev (38), who died in the stampede. "We were just a few metres from the shrine when the crowd suddenly surged. There was no space to move," he said.
Mohanlal from Rampur, grieving the loss of his six-year-old nephew Arush, said the temple gates had been shut due to overcrowding. "Pilgrims were stuck at the entrance. When people began moving back, everything spiralled into chaos," he said.

The family had taken a dip in the Ganga and was headed to the temple for a mundan ceremony (head-shaving). Arush's aunt and four-year-old cousin remain in critical condition.
Rohit Sharma (21), from Mainpuri, who survived with injuries, said, "I am extremely lucky to have escaped the jaws of death. People were screaming and crying for help. I was praying to god to save me."
Vinod Shah (35), a devotee from Bhagnapur, described being trapped from both directions.
"The crowd had stalled completely. There were rumours that the temple gate was shut, and people coming down collided with those going up. Then people just started falling. By god's grace, I survived."
The path where the stampede happened is the oldest pedestrian route to the temple, involving a climb of nearly 700 steps to reach the shrine perched over 500ft above. It falls within Raja Ji National Park and, during heavy footfall, is restricted to one-way movement.
Officials said the rush swelled suddenly on Sunday.
After the stampede, the injured and deceased were transported to hospitals with locals joining police teams in the rescue effort. Gaurav Singh, a resident, said the panic escalated when people began climbing the walls. "Youths helped carry the injured up to the temple path and then down to the road using scooters and motorcycles," he said.
Survivors and locals blamed the tragedy on overcrowding and the dangerously narrow path. Many pointed out that it was the month of Shravan and a Sunday, conditions that guaranteed a heavy rush and said the administration should have made preparations accordingly.

Now, ‘Gaj Mitra' to guard villagers against jumbos

Lucknow: After introduction of 'baagh mitras' (friends of tiger), a force of volunteers from Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Uttar Pradesh may soon form a force of 'gaj mitra' (friends of elephant) volunteers in Bijnor, where elephants frequently cross over from Corbett National Park. They will handle and mitigate conflict between humans and elephants, just as 'baagh mitras' do in Dudhwa, Pilibhit and Amangarh tiger reserves. Project Tiger UP APCCF Lalit Kumar Verma, said, "After baagh mitras proved to be of great help in tiger reserves we trained gaj mitras in areas with high elephant movement." Bagh mitra was launched in 2020 as the reserve experienced high incidence of human-animal conflict. It is now a force of 300 men and women. Need for Gaj mitras was felt in Bijnor because of human-elephant conflicts. "With 300 villages on the fringes of the three tiger reserves, we required at least one person in every village as baagh mitra. We will make similar assessment for gaj mitra," said the official. Gaj mitra volunteers will not be paid by forest department so as not to dilute the purpose, but they will be provided training and resources. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like EV chargers from £899 ScottishPower Learn More Undo Their primary role will be to report any movement of elephants in the area, acting as "first informers". Bagh mitras ascertain pugmarks to identify the animal—tiger, leopard, hyena, wolf, or any other. Gaj mitra may not have to identify pugmarks and will only study which direction the herd is moving in. They will act as a bridge between villagers and forest department during rescue operations, to avoid any conflict between humans and animals. Age is no barrier to working as any 'mitra' of wildlife, the person only needs to be alert and agile. Since these volunteers will have first-point contact with villagers, their role becomes important.

Karnataka teachers criticise lesson-based assessment system, say promotes rote learning

Bengaluru: The school education department's lesson-based assessment kicked off in govt schools. However, teachers are not amused. Teachers across schools have called the system stifling, promoting rote learning and introducing excessive administrative work. As per the new system called lesson-based assessment (LBA), teachers are to conduct tests after every chapter. The tests will be out of 25 marks. After every test, the marks should be entered in the student achievement tracking system (SATS), and grades will be generated. This is applicable for classes 4-10 in Kannada medium and classes 1-10 in English medium classes. "This is a huge administrative task. For example, in social studies, there are around 30-40 chapters. Imagine the number of entries that need to be made by a teacher for a class of 30 students," said a teacher. Teachers also feel the system is stifling. "This is a rat race for teachers. They are just forced to teach one chapter after another, with no breathing space. The system is so rigid that you have to complete a fixed number of chapters within a given time in the same order given by the department. Where is the time and scope to step back and analyse results, create differentiation in classrooms to teach at the right level for different groups, bring engaging learning materials, leverage peer learning?" said another teacher from East Bengaluru. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Are Ditching Finger Pricks with This Breakthrough Monitor Thelifeh Undo You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Educationists also point out that it is just promoting rote learning. "All that the department is now expecting from children is to learn the answers and score in the exams. There is no space for creative or critical thinking," said an educationist. "Repetitive, uniform tests result in assessment fatigue among students and teachers. The department should provide flexible guidelines, frameworks, and exemplar tools, not rigid prescriptions and formats. Teachers will be lost in marking scripts, making these entries as data entry operators. Teachers are not robots. They need time for lesson planning, process-oriented learning, engage in professional discussions and reflective practices," said a teacher trainer. "We have requested the department to reduce the number of questions for the assessments in the lower classes. The department has agreed and we hope to have an official order on this soon," said Chandrashekhar Nuggali, president, Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association. The department of school education and literacy said while the SATS website has been seeing some upgradation, the process of entering marks will be made smoother soon. "We have already provided them with a question bank with the questions for LBA. Further, with the Khan Academy's app, teachers will be able to use artificial intelligence to generate question papers. It will be easier for the teachers," said Rashmi Mahesh, principal secretary.
