SCIENTISTS in China claim they have developed a laser that can read millimetre-sized text from nearly a mile away.
That's smaller than a grain of rice.

The researchers say the new laser-based system can pick up small details from 1.36km away (0.85miles) that standard telescopes and binoculars would miss.
A typical telescope-based system at the same distance would only capture shapes around 42milimetres in size, researchers wrote in their study, published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
That is far too large to make out small writing.
Observing fine details from long distances with telescopes and high-power lenses brings its challenges.
Current long-distance reading systems require precise alignment of lasers and telescopes, making it tricky to pick out small features.
Distortion from the air can blur and scatter light over long distances, which can warp the view.
However, researchers took a new approach by on the way light hits a surface, rather than focusing on the image itself.
This method is called active intensity interferometry.
'Through outdoor experiments, we have successfully imaged millimeter-scale targets located at 1.36km away," the study authors wrote. "Achieving a resolution enhancement by about 14 times over the diffraction limit of a single telescope."

The researchers believe this method is 'promising for high-resolution optical imaging and sensing'.
Although, it also has a few limitations to overcome - for example, it needs a clear line of sight to the object.
The target must be illuminated with lasers, so it may not be suitable for surveillance scenarios where stealth is required.
Instead, the laser could be used by archaeologists to examine ancient carvings on cliffs without climbing them, and help environmental researchers monitor distant wildlife habitats.
The team has plans to improve the control of the laser, so they are easier to direct.
The researchers may also install artificial intelligence (AI), which could help reconstruct images more accurately.

A Chinese researcher in Michigan and her boyfriend have been charged with smuggling a biological pathogen that 'can cause devastating diseases in crops' into the United States, according to federal charging documents unsealed Tuesday. Yunqing Jian, 33, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, 34, were charged with multiple counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, smuggling goods into the country and making false statements to investigators, the complaint says. Liu was entering the country at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in July when border officers found the pathogen, a fungus known as Fusarium graminearum, in his backpack, according to the complaint. The small clumps of reddish plant material were discovered in four plastic baggies tucked into a wad of tissues. Liu and his girlfriend researched the pathogen as university students in China, the complaint says. Since 2023, Jian had been working at the University of Michigan's Molecular Plant-Microbe Interaction Laboratory. Liu initially told the officers that he did not know what the materials were and that someone must have planted them in his bag, but he then told a different story, the complaint says. 'Liu stated that he intentionally hid the samples in his backpack because he knew there were restrictions on the importation of the materials,' the complaint says. 'Liu confirmed that he had intentionally put the samples in a wad of tissues so CBP Officers would be less likely to find and confiscate them, and he could continue his research in the United States.' According to the complaint, Liu also said he planned to use the University of Michigan laboratory to conduct research on the pathogen. When investigators spoke to Jian, she denied knowing anything about Liu's smuggling or plans to research the pathogen, the complaint says. But an examination of Liu's and Jian's electronic devices uncovered WeChat messages from 2022 in which they discussed smuggling seeds into the United States. 'I put them in my Martin boots,' Liu wrote, according to the complaint. 'In a small bag. The ziplock bag. Very small.' 'That's good,' Jian replied, the complaint says. 'Just put it in your shoes.' At a federal court hearing Tuesday afternoon, a judge ordered Jian to remain behind bars after prosecutors described her as a flight risk. Liu, who was not allowed into the country after the pathogen was allegedly discovered in his backpack, remains at large. The FBI Counterintelligence Division conducted the investigation. 'Fusarium graminearum is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year,' the complaint says. 'The toxins produced by Fusarium graminearum cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in livestock and humans.' U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon said in a statement: 'The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals — including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party — are of the gravest national security concerns.' The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The University of Michigan said it condemns "any actions that seek to cause harm, threaten national security or undermine the university's critical public mission." "It is important to note that the university has received no funding from the Chinese government in relation to research conducted by the accused individuals," the university added in a statement. "We have and will continue to cooperate with federal law enforcement in its ongoing investigation and prosecution."

A long-running experiment finds a tiny particle is still acting weird

NEW YORK — Final results from a long-running U.S.-based experiment announced Tuesday show a tiny particle continues to act strangely — but that's still good news for the laws of physics as we know them. 'This experiment is a huge feat in precision,' said Tova Holmes, an experimental physicist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville who is not part of the collaboration. The mysterious particles called muons are considered heavier cousins to electrons. They wobble like a top when inside a magnetic field, and scientists are studying that motion to see if it lines up with the foundational rulebook of physics called the Standard Model. Experiments in the 1960s and 1970s seemed to indicate all was well. But tests at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the late 1990s and early 2000s produced something unexpected: the muons weren't behaving like they should. Decades later, an international collaboration of scientists decided to rerun the experiments with an even higher degree of precision. The team raced muons around a magnetic, ring-shaped track — the same one used in Brookhaven's experiment — and studied their signature wiggle at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago. The first two sets of results — unveiled in 2021 and 2023 — seemed to confirm the muons' weird behavior, prompting theoretical physicists to try to reconcile the new measurements with the Standard Model. Now, the group has completed the experiment and released a measurement of the muon's wobble that agrees with what they found before, using more than double the amount of data compared to 2023. They submitted their results to the journal Physical Review Letters. That said, it's not yet closing time for our most basic understanding of what's holding the universe together. While the muons raced around their track, other scientists found a way to more closely reconcile their behavior with the Standard Model with the help of supercomputers. There's still more work to be done as researchers continue to put their heads together and future experiments take a stab at measuring the muon wobble — including one at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex that's expected to start near the end of the decade. Scientists also are still analyzing the final muon data to see if they can glean information about other mysterious entities like dark matter. 'This measurement will remain a benchmark ... for many years to come,' said Marco Incagli with the National Institute for Nuclear Physics in Italy. By wrangling muons, scientists are striving to answer fundamental questions that have long puzzled humanity, said Peter Winter with Argonne National Laboratory.

June 3 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab has hired Donald Verrilli Jr, the U.S. solicitor general during the Barack Obama administration, to appeal a judge's ruling that the tech titan has an unlawful monopoly in online search, Google confirmed on Tuesday. Verrilli's hire is a key first step in Google's legal fight to undo the ruling, which it has said could pose a threat to its business. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta last year ruled Google holds an unlawful monopoly in online search and related advertising, and is considering proposals to make the tech titan sell off its popular Chrome browser, or share data that CEO Sundar Pichai says would allow competitors reverse engineer its search engine. Google has argued the DOJ failed to prove that competition was harmed by its exclusive agreements with device makers such as Apple to preload Google as the default search engine on new devices. The company has recently begun loosening its agreements to allow partners including Samsung to load rival apps. Verrilli, who as solicitor general was the Obama White House's top Supreme Court advocate, is known for his work successfully defending the Democratic president's signature domestic healthcare law. He will represent Google in its planned appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where Democratic-appointed judges outnumber Republican ones 9 to 6. Verrilli is separately the lead lawyer for law firm Susman Godfrey in its lawsuit against the Trump administration over an executive order that restricted its business. A judge in April blocked key provisions of the order. Verrilli is representing hundreds of other firms that filed a court brief denouncing Republican President Donald Trump's attacks on prominent law firms. He is also representing U.S. Copyright Office Director Shira Perlmutter in a lawsuit challenging her firing, and the National Endowment for Democracy in a case accusing the Trump administration of illegally withholding funds. Verrilli's firm Munger Tolles has represented Google in other lawsuits. The firm, whose founders include the late Charlie Munger, has counted Berkshire Hathaway and Bank of America as some of its other clients.
