Bohemians up to second after comfortable victory in Cork

RTÉ News17 hours ago

Bohemians' charge up the Premier Division table continued as they cruised to a comfortable victory away to Cork City.
First-half goals from Archie Meekison and Dayle Rooney saw the Gypsies move above Drogheda United into second. They remain six points adrift of Shamrock Rovers.
Dunfermline United manager Neil Lennon and Chesterfield chief Paul Cook watched on among the 3,215 crowd at Turner's Cross.
The home supporters weren't happy as they greeted the full-time whistle with a chorus of boos
The hosts looked like they were still on a mid-season break as their winless run extended to eight games.
They remain one point above bottom side Sligo Rovers, who have a game in hand.
Ger Nash broke new ground as, for the first time this season, City named an unchanged side. There were changes on the bench, though.
After 17 years in England, David Meyler had his homecoming as Nash's new assistant manager.
Meanwhile, club stalwart Mark McNulty slotted in as goalkeeping coach.
Alan Reynolds opted for one change as Leigh Kavanagh replaced Rob Cornwall in defence.
The Bohs boss felt his side had "something to prove against Cork" after their late defeat at the Cross in February. They accomplished that mission by stretching their good form to eight wins in 10 games.
Departing Crystal Palace loanee Seán Grehan and Kavanagh were dominant at the back. Kavanagh's diagonal ball created the first chance for Meekison. The Scottish winger had all the time in the world to pick his spot, but fluffed his shot off target.
When the chance came again, he showed bundles more composure. The opportunity arrived in the 11th minute from Rooney's long clearance. Darragh Crowley's heavy touch presented Meekison with a clear run from halfway. He went around Tein Troost twice on his mazy run before rolling home his first goal of the season.
With City's hopes of a first clean sheet of 2025 extinguished, the one-way traffic continued.
Kavanagh's outside-of-the-boot flick from a corner forced Troost into an acrobatic save. Then, Rooney's wonderful chip floated just wide.
Cork only had one shot in the first half. They should have scored it, too. Josh Fitzpatrick's cross found its way to Cathal O'Sullivan, but the Premier League-linked teenager headed wide.
Bohs carved City open twice down the left in the closing stages. From the first of those, Adam McDonnell's shot was blocked away by Freddie Anderson as Bohs protested for handball.
They made the next one count. McDonnell turned Anderson, Ross Tierney's shot ran across goal, and Rooney was left with the simplest of tap-ins for his third goal in four games.
It could have been three before the break, but McDonnell curled around the post.
Troost produced another super save on the resumption. Rooney gave the return ball to Tierney, who looked certain to score, until the keeper reached back across to save.
Tierney had another chance moments later, which Anderson slid across to block.
City had a couple of penalty appeals waved away. Seanie Maguire tumbled over in the box, but Paul Norton gave the free-kick to Kavanagh. Then, Jordan Flores came through the back of O'Sullivan and was lucky to escape without any punishment.
Half-time substitute Kitt Nelson and O'Sullivan flashed shots over the bar as City tried to build momentum. Maguire had the next opening, but Flores deflected his shot behind.
City produced precious little in the final 20 minutes as Dawson Devoy came closest to adding a third, denied by Troost.
Cork City: Tein Troost; Milan Mbeng, Freddie Anderson, Charlie Lyons, Darragh Crowley (Kitt Nelson 46); Cathal O'Sullivan, Seán Murray (Greg Bolger 53), Evan McLaughlin (Rio Shipston 71), Josh Fitzpatrick; Seani Maguire (Malik Dijksteel 75), Djenairo Daniels.
Bohemians: Kacper Chorazka; Niall Morahan, Seán Grehan, Leigh Kavanagh (Rob Cornwall 80), Jordan Flores; Dawson Devoy, Adam McDonnell (Keith Buckley 73); Dayle Rooney, Ross Tierney (James McManus 80), Archie Meekison (Rhys Brennan 73); James Clarke (Colm Whelan 73).

Mason Mount sends perfect two-word message as Man Utd complete Cunha signing

Mason Mount has taken to social media to send his best wishes to Matheus Cunha following his move to Manchester United. Just after the Premier League season wrapped up, United didn't waste any time and swiftly secured the services of the Brazilian from Wolverhampton Wanderers by activating his £62.5m buy-out clause. The 26 year old forward, who was amongst the season's top performers with 15 goals and six assists, played a key role in helping Wolves secure a 16th-place finish in the league standings. On Thursday afternoon, United confirmed that all the paperwork for the deal had been completed and the forward had penned a five-year deal at Old Trafford, reports the Manchester Evening News. Shortly after that announcement, Mount, who made the move to United from Chelsea two years ago, shared a snap of Cunha signing his contract on Instagram with the caption: "Welcome brother!" Speaking as a Man United player for the first time, Cunha said: "It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. "I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. "I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my team-mates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top." United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, added: "Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. "He has proved his ability to succeed in the Premier League as one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England during his time at Wolves, and, before that, in Spain and Germany. He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours."

LOI preview: Break over and Sligo eye winning bounce, with in-form Waterford heading to the Showgrounds

As it has been for more than a few weeks now, Sligo Rovers' quest for league points is paramount and the Premier Division's basement club welcome Waterford FC to the Showgrounds this evening, seeking only a second win this season on their home patch. Rovers boss John Russell is steadfast in his view that his side can turn it around. Recent performances would indicate that Sligo are not mere cannon fodder in this league; they have been scoring goals, but defensive lapses are costing them dearly. Their fixture before the mid-season break saw them lose 1-0 at home to St Pat's Athletic. On Good Friday, the Bit O'Red thumped Waterford 4-0 at the RSC, a result that brought Keith Long's time at the club to an end. Enter Coleman, who previously had a spell in charge of Sligo. The experienced 62-year-old joined the Blues with more than 1200 games as boss under his belt having also worked at the likes of Accrington Stanley, Gillingham and Rochdale in England. He steadied a leaking ship, with some of Waterford's recent games – most notably that 2-2 draw with Pat's at Richmond Park – an indication that their true worth is higher than their current position of eight in the table. In team news, Ollie Denham is Rovers' only injury concern in the lead up to this evening's clash. The centre-half continues to struggle with a sports hernia injury but is expected to return to training next week. For Waterford, Rowan McDonald is out through suspension, while Kacper Radkowski remains absent after picking up an ankle injury prior to the mid-season break. Trae Coyle, Matty Smith and Andy Boyle remain injured, with Coleman hopeful of having Trae Coyle and Andy Boyle back involved in matchday squads in the coming weeks. Looking ahead to the game, John Russell feels there is more to come from his young squad. He told "The players have enjoyed their short breaks and have come back in great shape knowing what is ahead of us. It was important that the lads were able to switch off for a brief period and enjoy time with family and friends before returning fully focused earlier this week. They are refreshed and ready to face Waterford and what's ahead in the coming weeks. "Obviously, we completed the first half of the season in a position we do not want to be in. That is why myself and the staff here have been working through the summer break as the planning went on in an effort to try and lift us from our current position. "We sent the players away after the defeat to Pat's and asked them all to reflect on how things have gone the last few months. A few haven't reached their potential, while some of the lads, particularly our younger ones have done really, really well considering the difficult circumstances. "But we are all working extremely hard to turn this around and I think if we continue to do so, we absolutely will lift ourselves away from where we are in the table." As for Coleman, it's about building on the work done so far under his stewardship, while not underestimating what the hosts will bring at the Showgrounds. Speaking to he said: "I think Sligo's performances are better than what the league table suggests and what their points total suggests. We're going to have to be at our very best tomorrow. "Our players are under no illusions at how important the task is ahead of us, and that's the same for any team you go to in this league. "I've gone on record in recent weeks saying how impressed I've been with the league since I came back, so we know we can't drop our own standards that we've set out in recent weeks. "Everyone can see we're playing good football, and we've got to translate that into results – starting in Sligo."
