Family of kidnapped Lindsay Knowlden praise Hawks
The family of kidnapping survivor Lindsay Knowlden, who was returned to her family on Wednesday morning, have praised the Hawks, the police, Atlas Security and the community for the 'massive efforts' to bring her home.
Knowlden was abducted by two armed men from the parking garage at the Fresh Produce Market in Markman Industrial early on Saturday morning, 21 June. A white Toyota Fortuner reportedly blocked the garage entrance while Knowlden was forced into a Volkswagen Polo and driven away. The getaway vehicle was later flagged on CCTV footage but had been fitted with cloned number plates.
Speaking on behalf of the family, family friend John Best said they were grateful to have Knowlden back. He said she was safe and not physically hurt. He added that the family appreciated the wide support they had received.
Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said: 'The Hawks in the Eastern Cape can confirm that a 65-year-old female victim, who was reportedly abducted on the morning of 21 June 2025 in Gqeberha, has been safely reunited with her family in the early hours of this morning. Following her recovery, the victim was examined by medical professionals. At this stage, we kindly request that the family be afforded the privacy and time they need to process and recover from this distressing ordeal.'
Mhlakuvana said the investigation remains ongoing and 'we continue to pursue all possible leads'.
He urged anyone who may have information that could assist in the matter to come forward, saying their identities would be protected. Andre Snyman from eBlockwatch, a community crime-fighting network, also confirmed Knowlden's safe return on Wednesday morning.
'To the police, private teams, community networks, and every person who shared, searched and stood together – thank you. This was a massive team effort. We are deeply grateful,' Snyman said in a social media post.
The news was also confirmed by Wayne Hart from Atlas Security, the private security provider for the couple's business, which was first on the scene.
The kidnapping has once again put the spotlight on the security concerns of business owners in Markman Industrial. For the past two years, members of the Markman Business Forum and business owners have been pleading with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for improved security infrastructure, specifically a 300m fence to improve the safety of those who work in the area, spokesperson Graham Taylor said on Sunday.
Taylor said that a meeting had been held this month with acting city manager Ted Pillay and 'some commitments were made', adding that boundaries of Markman Industrial are incredibly porous.
'We are vulnerable on three sides of the area. We need a 300m fence. That corner where the Fresh Produce Market is has always been a problem,' he said.
He said that, to the municipality's credit, it had tried to improve the security at that market and had built a wall around the facility.
'But personally I have never seen security guards there. The problem is that it remains completely accessible from the back,' Taylor said.
He said the area was monitored by private security but urgently needed a fence.
'That way we can introduce proper access control.' He said that currently, anybody could enter the area.
Earlier this month, Sanral construction manager Victor Ngcobo was kidnapped from Addo Road, 3km from the latest abduction. He was released unharmed.
In April, American missionary Josh Sullivan was kidnapped from a church a mere 5km from Markman Industrial. He was freed by the police after they found his kidnappers in the process of moving him. Three men who had held him were killed in a shootout. DM

Parolee (41) denied bail after impersonating former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya
JOHANNESBURG - A 41-year-old parolee has been denied bail by the Hatfield Magistrates Court in a case of impersonating former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya. Thabo Theletsane was re-arrested earlier this year and charged with fraud and impersonating a police official. It's alleged that in October 2024, while on parole for another fraud matter, Theletsane contacted a prominent businessman on WhatsApp, claiming his phone had been hacked. Thabo Theletsane told the prominent businessman that an official from the Cybercrime Unit would help clean up his phone if he shared his frequently used contact numbers and paid a fee to fix the hacked phone. While he obtained the contacts, the businessman didn't pay for what the scammer said would be a hard drive to store his information. Theletsane then made contact with another complainant using the phone numbers supplied by the businessman and allegedly scammed him of R50,000 using the same modus operandi. NPA spokesperson for the North Gauteng Division, Lumka Mahanjana, said the matter has been postponed to September for transfer to the Pretoria Magistrates Court. 'In court, he asked to be released on bail, but the state opposed his release on bail and argued that the accused would likely repeat the offence because he allegedly committed this offence a few days later being released on parole.'

Man accused of impersonating ex Hawks head denied bail
The Hatfield magistrate's court has denied bail to parolee Thabo Enoch Theletsane who is accused of fraud and impersonating a police official. 'It is alleged that on October 25 2024 while out on parole after serving a sentence for fraud, Theletsane, 41, contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp using a profile picture of the former national head of the Hawks Lt-Gen Godfrey Lebeya,' National Prosecuting Authority Lumka Mahanjana said During the call, he allegedly claimed the businessman's phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by a 'Mr Mokoena', purportedly a police officer from the cybercrime unit. Posing as 'Mr Mokoena', Theletsane allegedly told the businessman that his phone had been hacked and offered to 'clean' it. 'He is accused of requesting the businessman's frequently used contact numbers, which he then obtained. The accused allegedly asked the businessman to make a payment for a hard drive to store his information; however, this payment was not made.' In a separate incident, Theletsane allegedly contacted another complainant using the numbers supplied by the businessman. He allegedly told the second complainant that their phone had been hacked and requested a payment of R50,000 for a hard drive to store their information. The complainant paid the money. 'After realising they had been defrauded, both victims reported the matter to the police on November 1 2024. After an intensive investigation, Theletsane was arrested on May 10.' In court, Theletsane requested bail, claiming he has seven children and another on the way to provide for. Prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed bail and read into the record an affidavit by investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini, who said the accused had deliberately given a false address during the investigation and had two previous convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, making him likely to reoffend if released. Denying Theletsane bail, the court agreed with the state that the accused had a propensity for committing crime since he is alleged to have committed the latest offences just days after being released on parole. The case was postponed until September 2 for transfer to the Pretoria magistrate's court.

Parolee denied bail for impersonating Hawks boss in fraud case
Thabo Theletsane appeared before the Hatfield Magistrates court on charges of impersonating a police officer. Image: Supplied A parolee was denied bail on Monday after allegedly defrauding businesspeople and impersonating the national head of Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya. Thabo Enoch Theletsane, 41, faced charges of fraud and impersonation during a hearing at the Hatfield Magistrate's Court. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Theletsane contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp, using a profile picture of Lebeya, the former National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). This incident occurred while he was out on parole, having been released on 24 October 2024 after serving a sentence for previous fraud offences. During the call, he allegedly claimed his phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by 'Mr. Mokoena,' purportedly a police officer from the cybercrime unit. "Posing as 'Mr. Mokoena,' Theletsane allegedly told the businessman that his phone had been hacked and offered to 'clean' it. He is accused of requesting the businessman's frequently used contact numbers, which he then obtained. The accused allegedly asked the businessman to make a payment for a hard drive to store his information; however, this payment was not made," said the NPA in a statement released on Monday. In a separate incident, Theletsane allegedly contacted another complainant using the numbers supplied by this businessman. He allegedly told the second complainant that their phone had been hacked and requested a payment of R50,000 for a hard drive to store their information. The complainant paid the money. However, after realising they were defrauded, both victims reported the matter to the police a week later, on November 1, 2024. Following an investigation, Theletsane was arrested on May 10, 2025. He further argued that the parole board had indicated it would reconsider revoking his parole if he were granted bail. However, Prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed the bail application, presenting an affidavit from investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini. The affidavit revealed that Theletsane had deliberately provided a false address during the investigation and had two prior convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, making him a likely candidate to reoffend if released. In delivering judgment, the magistrate agreed with the State that the accused has a propensity to commit crimes since he is alleged to have committed the current offences just days after being released on parole. The court also found his claims about the parole board to be unsubstantiated and ruled that releasing him would not be in the interest of justice. The matter was postponed to September 2, 2025 for transfer to Court 16 at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. IOL
