Top 10 world's most safe and unsafe countries: India trails behind Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and even Iraq
In contrast, the United States of America finds itself at a worrying 91st place, hardly comforting news for either tourists or residents.
To compile the rankings, Numbeo analysed how secure people feel in their daily lives, both during daylight hours and at night. The index was shaped by public perceptions of threats such as 'mugging, robbery, car theft, physical attacks by strangers, harassment in public places, and discrimination based on factors like skin color, ethnicity, gender or religion.' It also includes concerns over property crimes like vandalism and burglary, as well as violent crimes like assault and homicide.
Each of the 148 countries was assigned a score from 1 (least safe) to 100 (most safe), creating a global snapshot of perceived personal safety.
Taking second place is the tiny yet ultra-secure nation of Andorra, nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, with a safety score of 84.8. Despite having a population smaller than that of Warwick, Rhode Island, this pint-sized principality is proving that size doesn't matter when it comes to security.
Qatar followed closely at No. 3 with a score of 84.6, trailing Taiwan (83.0) and Macao (81.8), a special administrative region of China.

At the other end of the spectrum, Haiti is ranked the least safe country in the world—a grim reflection of the escalating gang violence plaguing the nation. With a score of just 19, it sits at the bottom of the list. Rounding out the bottom five are Papua New Guinea (19.3), Venezuela (19.5), Afghanistan (24.8), and South Africa (25.4).

10 Most Unsafe Countries In The World, As Per 2025 Crime Index
Before you lock in your next travel destination, it might be worth asking: How safe does it feel to be there? While guidebooks talk about top attractions and food spots, they often skip the part about local crime perception. Numbeo is a crowd-sourced platform where people rate their perception of crime in a city or country. People share how they feel about local crime, rating it from -2 (very unsafe) to +2 (very safe). To keep things legit, Numbeo runs these responses through filters that catch spam and fake accounts. The final scores are converted to a 0 to 100 scale, where anything below 20 is considered very low crime, 20 to 40 is low, 40 to 60 is moderate, 60 to 80 is high, and anything above 80 is classified as very high crime. Also Read: Abu Dhabi Ranked Safest City In The World In 2025. Safest Indian City Is... People are rating several factors, including their perception of general crime levels, how safe they feel during the day and at night, concerns about being mugged, robbed, harassed, or worse, as well as the severity of property crimes like theft, burglary, and vandalism, and violent crimes such as assault, homicide, and sexual violence. Of course, this is all about perception, not actual police records. The Crime Index list may help travellers plan their destinations. Here are 10 countries that ranked highest on the Crime Index: Pietermaritzburg, South Africa - 82.7 Pretoria, South Africa - 81.8 Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - 81.4 Caracas, Venezuela - 81.3 Johannesburg, South Africa - 80.8 Durban, South Africa - 80.4 San Pedro Sula, Honduras - 79.4 Port Elizabeth, South Africa - 78.3 Memphis, TN, United States - 78.0 Salvador - Brazil India is not on this particular list, but it still falls into the "moderate" crime bracket, the report added. Urban safety varies from city to city, so travellers should do some digging before deciding where to stay or what to explore.

Crime index 2025: 10 least safe countries in the world; check full list
Imagine you're planning your next trip, or maybe thinking of relocating, and you start Googling 'Is this city safe?' You're hit with a barrage of Reddit threads, government stats, and that one friend who swears that the city is not safe. Well, here is a list of countries that ranked in the top of the Crime Index of Numbeo, a crowd-sourced rating system that estimates the overall crime level in a city or country. Contributors rate their perception of local crime on a scale from -2 (strong negative perception) to +2 (strong positive perception). These numbers are then filtered using spam-detecting algorithms to weed out bots, trolls, and people demonstrating suspicious behaviour. The final score is scaled from 0 to 100 for easy understanding: Very low crime: Below 20 Low: 20–40 Moderate: 40–60 High: 60–80 Very high: Above 80 So if a place scores a 78, it's not exactly safe after dark. The Safety Index, by the way, is just the Crime Index's mirror twin. The higher the Safety Index, the more comfortable you should feel walking alone at night without clutching your keys like Wolverine claws. What are people rating? Numbeo asked its users to weigh in on several crime-related factors, such as: Perception of general crime levels How safe people feel during the day and at night Concerns about being mugged, robbed, harassed, or worse Severity of property crimes (think theft, burglary, vandalism) Severity of violent crimes (assault, homicide, sexual violence) It's a pretty comprehensive list, and while it may not reflect actual crime reports, it certainly tells you how people feel about their environment. And sometimes, that gut feeling is just as important. Read more: Which country has the largest snake population What about official crime stats? Governments around the world do collect actual crime data, usually based on reported incidents per capita. But comparing those numbers internationally is like comparing apples to secretive oranges. Here's why: In some countries, people underreport crime—either due to mistrust in the police or cultural stigma. Some governments fudge the numbers for political reasons. (Looking at you, suspiciously safe autocracies.) And in many places, data isn't even available, or is too outdated to be useful. So, while government statistics are useful within a single country, they're not always great for global comparisons. That's where Numbeo steps in, offering a perception-based, cross-border index that's continuously updated and semiannually reviewed. Here's a snapshot from Numbeo's current index: Haiti - 32.6 Papua New Guinea - 31.6 Venezuela - 29.0 Afghanistan - 28.1 South Africa - 25.4 Honduras - 24.8 Trinidad and Tobago - 19.5 Syria - 19.3 Jamaica - 19.0 India isn't in the top 10, or should we say, bottom 10, but it still finds itself in the 'moderate' crime bracket. Urban safety remains a concern, especially with rising population density and varying law enforcement standards. Do note that Numbeo's Crime Index is perception-based, crowd-sourced, and influenced by personal experience. Safety isn't just about crime rates—it's about how safe people feel, and that, in turn, shapes neighborhoods, travel choices, and city planning.
