Vande Bharat train maintenance: Golden Rock Workshop technical teams visit various facilities
With the Golden Rock Railway Workshop at Tiruchi nominated to undertake major schedules of Vande Bharat rakes, technical teams from the workshop were sent to different railway workshops in the country to gain first hand exposure and experience in the maintenance of the modern coaches.
Technical personnel visited the railway workshops at Matunga in Mumbai, Ajmer in Rajasthan and Charbagh in Lucknow to get to know the process in the maintenance of coaches, the existing set up and the infrastructure. The teams are expected to visit other maintenance depots, said workshop authorities.
The Railway Board, New Delhi, had named the Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi in place of the workshop in Perambur in Chennai to undertake major schedules of Vande Bharat train sets. The board had advised to plan for the development of infrastructure and testing facilities at the workshop required to carry out major schedules along with other modalities.
Built during the colonial era at Ponmalai, the Golden Rock Railway Workshop is involved in a myriad of activities carrying out periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives, conventional ICF coaches and Linke Hofmann Bosch passenger coaches. It is carrying out periodic overhaul of steam locomotives operated in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway besides manufacturing various types of freight wagons and converting old passenger coaches into automobile carriers.
Maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches would require the creation of a shed with overhead electrical arrangements and necessary infrastructure and equipment in place. The workshop is exploring the possibility of creating a separate facility for the exclusive maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches on railway land outside the workshop premises and close to the upcoming MEMU shed nearby.
The preliminary estimate for the maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches at the workshop is under preparation involving different departments, the authorities said. The semi high-speed Vande Bharat trains have been introduced in different sections across the railway network since February 2019 to provide better travel experience and riding comfort for passengers.
These trains have faster acceleration and can run at a speed of 160 kmph. The modern coaches are equipped with safety features and a host of amenities, including automatic plug doors, fully sealed gangway for free passenger movements, aerosol-based fire detection, and suppression and reclining ergonomic seats.

We've visited places like Belgaum, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg. Many had tried to scare us into cancelling our trip, but we were determined. When we heard Vande Bharat was running, we cancelled our taxi to Jammu Tawi, even though we lost Rs 6,000. We booked Vande Bharat tickets at 7 PM and reached Srinagar by 8 PM. Due to my health problems, the train made travel much easier.' Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, 'The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable.' His wife, Manju Khajanchi, also expressed satisfaction with their Kashmir trip. 'We've spent five days in Srinagar. The weather is lovely, and people are welcoming. Whatever you hear in the news is far from reality. It's peaceful and beautiful--just like a paradise,' she said, standing at Srinagar railway station before boarding the train back to Katra. Another traveller highlighted the new service's time-saving aspect: 'Earlier, travelling to Jammu meant taking a flight or a long taxi ride. Now, the Vande Bharat train will make the same journey in nearly the same time as a flight. It's a great move by the government to connect Kashmir with the rest of India.' He added, 'This will benefit not just tourists but also officials and local commuters. Once extended to Jammu in two months, the journey will become even smoother. People from the South who earlier avoided long flights or multiple modes of transport can now come by train.' With the commencement of this route, many believe Kashmir will witness a sharp rise in tourism, as Vande Bharat promises a fast, reliable, and scenic journey through the valley. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. All trains operating on this route will be escorted by commandos. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, these trains will be run only during the day. No train will operate at night. As per Railway officials, this will be the first time that CORAS will be deployed in a train. Entry After Security Check Enhanced security measures are in place for the Vande Bharat Express train travelling to Kashmir. This includes heightened security for the train itself, as well as the tunnels, Chenab Bridge, and Anji Bridge along its route. Passengers and their luggage will undergo security checks and scans before boarding at Platform 1 in Katra. Valid identification is required, and luggage will be X-rayed.
