Italy's PM, French president hold talks in Rome

The Star2 days ago

ROME, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron and the two leaders held bilateral talks on various issues, including trade, and relationships with the United States, according to Italian media.
The French president was greeted with the guard of honour at Palazzo Chigi, and Meloni and Macron were seen shaking hands and smiling for cameras before entering the government palace.
The bilateral talks were expected to help dispel recent tensions between the two countries, Ansa news agency reported. France and Italy are traditional allies, and the second and third-largest economies in the European Union (EU), respectively, but the two governments have been at odds over a number of issues, and are politically distant: Meloni leads a right-wing, nationalist cabinet, while Macron is centrist and strongly pro-European.
According to Ansa, the two leaders also differ from each other in their approach to the United States, with Meloni seeking to build close ties with President Donald Trump -- and play a negotiating role between the United States and the EU on tariffs -- and Macron advocating a more independent EU's stance.
On the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both countries have vowed strong support to Kiev, but the Italian prime minister has shown skepticism toward a French-British plan to send peacekeeping troops in case of a peace deal.
Meloni's office did not release any statement after the bilateral meeting with the French president on Tuesday, nor held a press conference. On Saturday, however, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani declared Macron's visit would be "an absolutely positive event between two countries that are allies and neighbours."

China's Xi held phone call with Trump: state media

Until today, the two leaders had not had any confirmed contact more than five months since the Republican returned to power, despite frequent claims by the US president that such a call was imminent. – AFP photo BEIJING (June 5): Chinese leader Xi Jinping held a phone call with US President Donald Trump today, state media reported, as the world's top two economies clash over trade. The call follows officials in Beijing and Washington accusing each other of jeopardising a trade war truce agreed last month in Geneva. It took place at Trump's request, the Xinhua news agency said without elaborating, and came after the US president appeared to dampen hopes for a quick resolution to their trade battle. 'I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!' he posted Wednesday on his Truth Social platform. The White House did not immediately comment on the reported phone call, but had earlier suggested Trump would speak to Xi. Until today, the two leaders had not had any confirmed contact more than five months since the Republican returned to power, despite frequent claims by the US president that such a call was imminent. Trump said in a Time Magazine interview in April that Xi had called him — but Beijing insisted that there had been no call recently. Trading blame on deal Although Beijing and Washington agreed in Geneva to slash staggeringly high tariffs on each other's goods for 90 days, the two sides have since traded blame for derailing the deal. Trump argued Friday that China had 'totally violated' the agreement, without providing further details. China's commerce ministry hit back this week, saying the Trump administration had since introduced 'discriminatory restrictive measures', including revoking Chinese student visas in the United States. Washington has targeted Chinese nationals who entered the United States both legally and illegally, with the president vowing to aggressively revoke Chinese student visas. The US leader introduced in April sweeping worldwide tariffs that targeted China most heavily of all, accusing other countries of 'ripping off' the United States and running trade imbalances. Trump put a pause on the steepest levies, sparking a flurry of negotiations with trading partners. China had been hit with additional levies of 145 per cent on its goods as both sides engaged in tit-for-tat escalation. China's countermeasures on US goods reached 125 per cent. Trump has separately ramped up tensions with other trade partners, including the European Union, by vowing to double global tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50 per cent from Wednesday. – AFP China donald trump phone call us Xi Jinping

EU a 'reliable partner' for digital cooperation amid turbulence, tech chief says

FILE PHOTO: Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen holds a press conference after the European Commission College meeting in Brussels, Belgium January 15, 2025. REUTERS/Johanna Geron/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union will work with international partners to boost its competitiveness and promote a rules-based global digital order, EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said on Thursday, a move aimed at offsetting turbulent ties with the United States. The U.S. administration has in recent months criticised the European Commission for its swathe of new rules reining in the power of Big Tech and threatened to impose tariffs in retaliation for fines levied on U.S. tech giants. Under the proposed International Digital Strategy announced on Thursday, the 27-country bloc will collaborate with other countries for a secure and trusted digital infrastructure in energy, transport, finance and health, the European Commission said. Other areas of cooperation include emerging technologies, digital governance that fosters social cohesion and protects democratic principles, cybersecurity and protecting children on online platforms. "We are living through a profound digital revolution that is reshaping economies and societies worldwide. This is happening in a geopolitical landscape that is more challenging than before," Virkkunen told a press conference. "In this environment, the EU is stepping forward as a stable and reliable partner, deeply committed to digital cooperation with our allies and partners," she said. Virkkunen said the proposed strategy had two prongs - the first is to boost the bloc's competitiveness in key technologies like AI, quantum cybersecurity or semiconductors, and the second is to help other countries in their digital goals. "Crucially, it reaffirms the EU's unwavering commitment to building a rules-based global digital order, rooted firmly in our fundamental values. Indeed, no country or region can lead the technological revolution alone," she said. What's Happening In Gaza Is 'Genocide,' Says Brazilian President Lula

ISTANBUL, June 5 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday denounced Israel's military campaign in Gaza as 'genocide,' while also calling for renewed global efforts to end the war in Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "This is not a war. It is genocide," Lula said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. "A genocide being carried out by a highly trained army, against women and children," he said, referring to the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza.
