The Bulldogs scored the game's first five points and stuck with the Spartans for most of the first half. Keyshawn Mitchell's 3-pointer put the Bulldogs up 24-21 before Michigan State responded with a 10-0 run. Carr had the first five points in the burst and scored 15 points in the first half.

The Spartans will face a team from New Mexico for the second time in the NCAA Tournament. They defeated New Mexico State in the first round in 2010.

There's only one Big Ten team Tom Izzo believes is a cut above MSU entering next season
In the eyes of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, there's only one team in the Big Ten he considers a cut above his Spartans right now. Izzo was a guest on Jon Rothstein's podcast Inside College Basketball Now this week, where he answered a number critical questions. One of those was assessing his team and where it stacks up with the rest of the league -- which Izzo apparently feels pretty good about. Izzo said he feels his team has as good of a returning nucleus as anyone else in the Big Ten, except for the Purdue Boilermakers -- who he believes are a cut above the rest of the league. "We got our main stays," Izzo said during the interview. "Coen Carr has gotten a lot better, Jeremy Fears, Carson Cooper has really made some progress, and Jaxon Kohler, and that's four really good main stays that have played a lot of minutes here. Now it's about adding in the guys. Does a Kur Teng -- a shooter that we have -- really improve, does it have to be one of our new guys. I think we more than anybody but Purdue, maybe, we have a base of, I wouldn't say starters back, but top six or seven guys and now two of those guys are seniors." Michigan State won the Big Ten last season by three games and was clearly the best team in the league by the time March rolled around. But the Spartans have lost a number of key contributors from that squad, including top scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins. But regardless of that, Izzo appears to be pretty excited about the team he has in front of him for this next season -- which is great news for us Spartans. Izzo has never been the type to sugarcoat anything and will call it as it is, so to hear him speak this highly of his team for next year is a great sign. HBCU Adds Big Ten Champs to Already Loaded Schedule
Coppin State women's basketball isn't ducking anyone. Fresh off announcing marquee matchups against South Carolina and Tennessee, the HBCU just added another giant to their 2025-26 gauntlet: Big Ten champion Ohio State. Head coach Darrell Mosley revealed that Coppin will face the Buckeyes on November 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus. The Eagles also tacked on a road game at SMU on December 10, rounding out a schedule that's quickly becoming one of the most ambitious in all of HBCU hoops. Coppin's four Power Conference opponents read like a who's who of women's college basketball royalty. The Eagles will open with Big Ten champion Ohio State on November 9 in Columbus, then travel to Knoxville on November 23 to face eight-time national champion Tennessee. On January 18, Coppin will welcome the 2024 national champion South Carolina Gamecocks to Baltimore, before closing the stretch with a December 10 trip to Dallas to battle AAC contender SMU. The matchup with Ohio State will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Buckeyes finished 26-7 last season, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and brought back Jaloni Cambridge, a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team pick and Co-Freshman of the Year. Guard Chance Gray returns after starting all 33 games and scoring over 1,000 career points, while Boston College transfer T'yana Todd adds one of the nation's top three-point strokes. In short, Coppin is stepping directly into the fire. For Coppin State, this isn't unfamiliar territory. Just two years ago, the Eagles hosted Angel Reese and LSU inside PEC Arena, giving Baltimore fans a courtside look at the eventual national champions and one of the most recognizable names in women's basketball. That willingness to challenge the sport's elite has become a calling card for the program. And now, under a new head coach, the Eagles are doubling down on that identity. The Mosley era at Coppin State is officially underway after a major coaching change this offseason. Longtime coach Jermaine Woods stepped away, and in stepped Darrell Mosley, a Baltimore native who spent the last three seasons at Arizona State-two as the Sun Devils' associate head coach. Mosley previously turned Lincoln (Pa.) into a perennial contender in the CIAA and brings 15 years of experience at the college level. Athletic Director Derek Carter called him "a leader ready to take Coppin to new heights," while Mosley himself vowed to build "a culture of excellence both on and off the court." Scheduling Ohio State, Tennessee, and South Carolina in Year One? That's a statement. For HBCU women's basketball, these types of games are more than just paydays-they're platforms. Coppin State players will test themselves against some of the best talent in the country, from WNBA prospects at Tennessee to one of the deepest Big Ten lineups at Ohio State. Win or lose, it's visibility that strengthens recruiting, energizes alumni, and shows that HBCU programs aren't afraid to swing big. Former Spartains captain signs with American Hockey League team
A former Spartans captain has inked a deal with an American Hockey League club. Former Michigan State hockey forward Red Savage has signed a two-year deal with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. The Americans are the American Hockey League affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. Savage played the past two seasons with the Spartans after starting his career with the Miami (OH) Redhawks. During his time with the Spartans, Savage appeared in 58 games where he recorded 15 goals and 23 assists. He served as the Spartans' captain this past season, but unfortunately, experienced a season-ending injury in January that cut his senior season short. Savage was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2021. The Red Wings selected him with a fourth round pick.
