Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Is Reviewing Its 25-year Vision mai KAHUNGUNU2026 ki KAHUNGUNU2050
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated (NKII) is reviewing its 25-year vision from 2026-2050. The newly elected NKII Board members met for the first time on Friday 30 May, just in time for the roll out of the KAHUNGUNU2050 Strategic Vision Review.
Over the next two months, hui-a-tinana will be held in each of the six Taiwhenua/districts and at the two active Taurahere rohe in Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, and in Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington, to allow whānau to feed into the review. NKII Board Chairman Bayden Barber will lead the discussions with the key Board members and leaders of each rohe. The goal is for all Kahungunu voices to be heard.

We will hold hui-a-tinana; online zoom hui; online survey; email; and we are happy to be invited to additional / your hui if we cannot attend hui a tinana, we will zoom into your hui. Information will be updated on the iwi website. The first of these hui-a-tinana will start this week on Thursday 5 June at 5pm at the Wairoa Community Centre and will coincide with the launch of their Matariki events in Wairoa.
Former NKII Board member representing Wairoa, Nigel How, has been involved with the NKII Boards Review process during his two terms on the Board 2019-2025. NKII has learned a lot about our Wairoa whānau during these years.

Nigel was one of the only former Board members who supported his NKII Board member successor Esta Wainohu-Marcum bringing her to the Waipatu mahau on Friday during the pōhiri of the new NKII Board. Similar to Nigel and his upbringing, Esta has been raised and moulded for this position along with other positions she holds in the community. Even the Wairoa Mayor. Craig Little attended the pōhiri of the Board and spoke about Esta's value in their community of Wairoa.
Other former NKII Board members to acknowledge for their work and contribution to the KAHUNGUNU2026 Strategic Vison, many who have now passed on are, Murray Hemopo, William Blake, Aotearoa (Digger) Karauria, Albert Walker (Jnr), Sophie Keefe, Rill Meihana, Albert Walker, Miriama Hammond, Alice Wairau, Naomi Wilson and of course Nigel How.
Vision Background
In September 2001, consultation with whānau throughout the rohe of Kahungunu occurred. Whānau shared their views, aspirations and desires which helped shape the development of a vision to guide Ngāti Kahungunu into the future. The vision, known as Kahungunu 2026, outlined the vision and mission statements and identified seven strategic objectives to focus on. The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated planning framework continues to outline priorities, activities and desired outcomes that link directly to the strategic objectives within the Kahungunu 2026 vision.

Bring on the drones
An Australian-based company is pitching drone light shows for Queenstown over three months that'd not only be an amazing spectacle, but could potentially also drive big visitor numbers, especially during shoulder seasons. Drone Sky Shows, the southern hemisphere's largest drone light show provider, put on Dunedin's first Matariki drone show last winter, with a New Zealand-record 201 drones, and is doing it again this month. Its first show in Perth, in 2022, drew an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 people. Shows feature illuminated, synchronised and choreographed groups of drones arranged into various aerial formations — just about any shape can be brought to light. Local Chamber of Commerce chief executive Sharon Fifield believes the shows, each about 10 minutes long, would be perfect for Queenstown. ''What I like about the concept is it's something a bit different, it's low-impact to the environment, unlike fireworks, and then people can come into Queenstown and have a bit of a show before they head out to dinner and to the bars. ''Even our animals might like it. ''Events are perfect for these quieter times and for getting locals to come into town. ''We've lost Luma from the Gardens but it's almost taking Luma into the sky with a kind of light show.'' Luma — now transitioned into a winter-long 'Luma Enchanted' show at Kiwi Park — ran in the Gardens for almost 10 years and last year attracted about 32,000 visitors over King's Birthday Weekend. However, organisers pulled the plug due to rising costs. Drone Sky Shows owner Josh Van Ross believes Queenstown's an ''exceptional'' light show venue. He's proposing a 300-to-500-drone show over the Gardens ''which would point back at the town and just blow the socks off anyone who would come there''. ''We'd do a weekly show, Friday or Saturday night, we'd change it up multiple times and we'd love to really drive traffic back to Queens-town when it's shoulder season.'' Van Ross says there could be a ''family-friendly'' 6pm show and another at 9pm. ''This would be a first of its type for New Zealand as a residency — it's the same as kind of what the Maldives and other really high-end tourism destinations have.'' According to a proposal sighted by Mountain Scene, a 'standard' 100-drone show could cost $45,000, rising to $100,000 for 300 drones. Van Ross says the set-up costs are massive, ''but if we can set up there for two or three months the price per show comes down drastically''. A sponsor who came onboard could also have their logo beamed at the end of the show, he suggests. He'd be keen to collaborate with a local artist ''who can really make it speak to the people of Queenstown''. As far as setting up the show, Van Ross' NZ CEO and 'mission commander' is Queenstown-raised Shane Wild, who lives in Cromwell and stores almost 250 drones himself. Wild, who commutes to Queenstown most days, says a show would take just three months to organise. ''Mate, I can't believe we haven't done one here yet.'' scoop@

The announcement of NZME's board refresh signals hope for a return to more balanced reporting of news, which is an essential component of a healthy democracy. The Free Speech Union was pleased to play an advocacy role in this, says Nick Hanne of the Free Speech Union. 'Last year, the Free Speech Union urged supporters concerned about free and open discourse to get enough NZME shares to gain voting rights. FSU CEO Jonathan Ayling encouraged experienced people to put themselves forward for NZME board positions. 'The Free Speech Union has repeatedly called on NZME to stop censoring those views which appear to be offensive to certain staff and their stifling need to be 'politically correct'. The FSU also arranged meetings with the Managing Director and the Senior Editor, urging a restoration of the fundamental balance needed for the NZ Herald to stay a newspaper of record. 'We reminded them of how the Commerce Commission turned down their merger with Stuff, because the loss of media pluralism would be so damaging to democracy. We welcome the appointments of Steven Joyce and Jim Grenon on the NZME board and believe they'll play a crucial role in fixing this. 'Mr Grenon has weathered a lot of unjust criticism in pursuing this 'audacious' outcome. But his principled determination to defend broad viewpoint representation will help reestablish the centrality of free speech in our democracy. 'The media plays a crucial role in Kiwis' ability to seek, receive, and impart information, so it's essential that they platform multiple viewpoints on issues of public interest.
