‘Rainbow bridge' project for TAPS to offer pet owners a place of remembrance
PEKIN, Ill. (WMBD) — An animal shelter in Tazewell County hopes that a memorial for pets who have died will give peace their owners but also offer a chance to remember and honor those animals.
A Facebook post for TAPS in Pekin said the agency is 'creating a beautiful tribute to honor the pets who have given us unconditional love. This serene memorial space, made possible by the generosity of the Tracy Taylor Family and Friends, will be a place of remembrance and love.'
The area will be located on the TAPS property and give pet owners a 'a special space to honor the memory of your beloved companions. The project is brought to life through the generosity of the Taylor Family and Friends, whose startup funding has laid the foundation for the project.'
The center will build a rainbow bridge memorial and people can help support the effort by buying bricks. There are discounted prices until April 1. For more information on brick buying, click here.
The kick-off event will be March 15 at the Bella Ball, which will be held at the Premier Event and Entertainment Center in Peoria which was formerly known as the Landmark Recreational Center on Dries Lane.

Fish Tagging Program at Wildlife Prairie Park
HANNA CITY, Ill. (WMBD) — Over the weekend, Illinois fishers can fish without a license. According to the Department of Natural Resources, free fishing days in Illinois are an opportunity to introduce the activity to children and get new people to discover the fun in fishing. One place to go fishing is in Hanna City. The Wildlife Prairie Park is using this year to highlight its fishing lakes with its 'Fish Tagging Program.' The park has 7 lakes that allow fishing, but only 6 have tagged hybrid striped bass. North Lake Turtle Pond Taylor Lake Deep Lake Beaver Lake East Horseshoe Lake Fish can be found with red, white, or blue tags. Colored tags can be redeemed at the Visitor Center for prizes. Red tags can be traded in for a $25 gift certificate. White tags can be traded in for a choice of prizes, including a private animal meet and greet, a laser tag party, or a kayak party. Blue tags are the grand prize, which can get people the choice of a private animal feeding and encounter, a year-long membership, or a 2-night stay in Megan's Lodge. Peoria Park District opens new inclusive playground in West Peoria
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Children of all abilities now have a place to play at Fransiscan Recreation complex, thanks to Peoria Park District. The new playground includes a cliff wall, nature discovery table, interactive play panels like the letters maze and tic-tac-toe and much more. The sound of kids' laughter filled the air in and near the playground as a handful of kids got the first crack at the new playground. Their parents stood by, watching and enjoying the sights and sounds. Emily Cahill, the district's executive director, is glad to be able to work with the community in order to provide for the children. 'It's an opportunity for us to bring some new life to this park, which is well loved, lots of sports, a walking track that is used all the time,' she said during a mid-day press conference attended by the officials from the district and the city of West Peoria. It took roughly a year of community involvement, planning and design to get to this point. While parks within the park district are ADA compliant, Cahill said that out of the 42 total playgrounds, there are still more than a few that need to be fully replaced due to wear and tear and their age. 'We probably have somewhere in the range of 12 to 15 that need that full blown replacement and we have others that we're working on elements,' she said. Children's Museum in Peoria Celebrates a Decade Serving the Community A district priority is to be welcoming to all people, regardless of ability or age. 'One of our priorities is to make sure, as we talk about being welcoming to all that we mean to all,' she said. 'So really prioritizing this inclusion effort, making sure that we are representative and accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical ability, is something that we have prioritized and will continue to prioritize.' The district is working with smaller communities in the area to update or upgrade playgrounds that need it. Cahill even went as far as to say that Columbia Park on McClure Avenue could have a new playground sooner rather than later. 'We're really focusing in on those areas that need the most attention first, and then we'll work through you'll see new playgrounds at Columbia by the end of the year.' Outage at Tazewell County 911 center results in calls routed to Peoria County
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Calling 911 in Tazewell County, at least for the time being, will send a person to Peoria's emergency dispatch center due to an outage. In a Facebook post, the county's 911 dispatch center said 'All 911 lines coming into our center are down. If you call 911, the call will be routed to Peoria County and they will either take the information or transfer the call to us.' The center said they hoped to have the issue resolved by Thursday afternoon. 'You can call us direct on any of the non-emergency police lines or 309-346-3132 and 309-346-4141.
