Saifuddin Nasution to address public concerns over Zara Qairina's death in upcoming Parliament session on Monday
He said it was essential to clarify the issue as members of the lower house of Parliament had widely raised the matter.
'I have chosen Monday (to deliver the minister's statement) in Parliament on this issue,' he told reporters after chairing the Main Committee for the Management of Foreigners in Sabah (JKPWAS-INDUK) 2022 meeting and the Sabah State Special Committee on Citizenship Status (JKKSK) meeting here yesterday.
Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17 after being admitted to the hospital when found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, Papar, at 4am on July 16.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation into the death, previously classified as a sudden death, will now focus on potential criminal elements, including bullying.
The Attorney General's Chambers will also conduct an inquest into the student's death after reviewing the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police.
Meanwhile, with regards to the case involving Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son, the home minister said the police would make every effort to track down the perpetrator of the incident.
He said the matter was not about whose child was involved but about the police's responsibility in ensuring public order, safety and the protection of all citizens, especially children.
'I leave it to the wisdom and swiftness of the police to handle this, and I pray that his son and wife recover quickly from the trauma,' he also said.
It was reported yesterday that the former economy minister Rafizi's son was dragged out of their family car by two individuals dressed in black, with full-face helmets, and stabbed with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya at about 2pm. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Malaysia does not need a new law to tackle bullying as the offence is already covered under the Penal Code, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said today. Harian Metro reported that the women, family and community development minister said stricter enforcement is more important than drafting new laws, though amendments could be considered if necessary. 'The Penal Code states that bullying is a criminal offence and provides for a fine of up to RM3,000. This shows the current mechanism remains relevant and enforceable,' she told reporters in Kuching. 'At this stage, there is no need to draft a new law. What matters is strict implementation and enforcement.' She added that evolving circumstances may provide ideas for strengthening existing legislation, but responsibility for lawmaking lies with the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department. 'However, we can make proposals or raise ideas in Cabinet discussions if there are issues on bullying that need to be addressed,' she was quoted as saying by the national daily. Nancy also stressed the role of parents, schools and the wider community in curbing bullying, which has sparked public concern following a spate of cases in schools and universities that went viral on social media. Her comments came after the Anti-Bullying Act Advocacy Movement (GAB) urged the government to introduce legislation to define bullying, set out preventive measures and establish complaint procedures. GAB said current laws, including the Penal Code and the Child Act 2001, lack specific provisions and do not adequately protect victims.

3 senior cops to be questioned over non-compliance in Zara death probe

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A team from the Bukit Aman integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) will go to Sabah soon to record statements from three senior police officers involved in the preliminary investigation into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the department has opened a disciplinary investigation paper against a district police chief, a district criminal investigation division chief, and an investigating officer. They are suspected of non-compliance with standard operating procedures during the investigation into the case. 'The Bukit Aman JIPS officers will travel there within a day or two to record statements from these three officers. The investigation concerns non-compliance with SOPs in the Zara Qairina case and the supervision of investigating officers,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after the launch of the book 'Antologi Puisi Makan Suap' at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka last night. Ayob Khan said strict action would be taken against investigating officers and supervisors found to have violated the investigation SOPs. He said that so far, the three senior officers involved are continuing to carry out their duties as usual. On Wednesday, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the initial findings of the Bukit Aman Special Task Force investigation found elements of non-compliance with investigation procedures during the early probe into Zara's death. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the next day.

Police arrest more suspects, including ‘Datuk Seri', in MBI investment fraud probe
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Police have arrested several more individuals for investigations into the investment fraud scheme involving MBI International Group (MBI) under Op Northern Star. Head of the Bukit Aman Anti-Money Laundering (AMLA) Criminal Investigation Team, Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, confirmed the arrests when contacted, adding that they included individuals carrying the title 'Datuk Seri'. However, he said details of the latest results of Op Northern Star would be disclosed by Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail soon. On May 30, Muhammed Hasbullah revealed that 17 individuals had been arrested in connection with the MBI investment fraud case, with assets worth RM3.81 billion frozen and seized. He said the arrests included entrepreneurs with the titles 'Tan Sri' and 'Datuk Seri', believed to be proxies and business partners in the fraudulent investment scheme.
