LAGOS - Nigeria's former president Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in London, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

Born on Dec 17, 1942, Buhari was among the key figures in the December 1983 military coup that overthrew Nigeria's Second Republic. At the time, he was serving as General Officer Commanding the Third Armoured Division in Jos.
Following the coup, Buhari assumed power and appointed Tunde Idiagbon as Chief of General Staff, effectively the second-in-command.
The coup marked the end of Nigeria's Second Republic, which had restored multi-party democracy in 1979 after 13 years of military rule.
Buhari contested the presidency several times as a civilian, under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003 and 2007, and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011.
In 2014, he became the presidential candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC) and won the 2015 general election, defeating then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. It was the first time an incumbent president in Nigeria had lost a re-election bid.
Buhari was sworn in on May 29, 2015, and secured a second term in 2019 after defeating former vice-president Atiku Abubakar by over three million votes.

Turkiye: Israeli strikes on Damascus 'act of sabotage'

ISTANBUL: Turkiye on Wednesday condemned Israel's strikes on Syrian army headquarters in Damascus, saying they undermine stability in the war-torn country and must stop. "Israel's attacks on Damascus, following its military interventions in the south of Syria, constitute an act of sabotage against Syria's efforts to secure peace, stability, and security," the foreign ministry said in a statement. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shaibani, that Israel's strikes in southern Syria and Damascus were "alarming", a Turkish diplomatic source said. Israel bombed the Syrian army headquarters in Damascus on Wednesday after warning the government to leave the Druze minority alone in its Sweida heartland. Israel has presented itself as a defender of the Druze, although some analysts say that is a pretext for pursuing its own military goal of keeping Syrian government forces as far from the border as possible.--AFP

Summit on Palestinian statehood set for September in New York

PARIS: A high-level diplomatic summit to advance Palestinian statehood recognition and regional peace efforts will take place in September, a French diplomatic source confirmed. The talks, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, aim to revive long-stalled negotiations for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Originally scheduled for mid-June, the conference was postponed due to Israel's military actions against Iran. It has now been rescheduled for July 28 and 29 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where foreign ministers will lay the groundwork. The September meeting, expected to include heads of state, will likely be held in Paris or New York ahead of the UN General Assembly on September 22. The French diplomatic source stated that the July discussions will focus on 'advancing the recognition of a Palestinian state by countries that have not yet done so, including France.' Additionally, the talks will address 'normalisation and Israel's regional integration with Arab and Muslim nations.' France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot will attend the July meeting. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron urged joint recognition of Palestine by France and Britain. Earlier, Barrot indicated that France would not act unilaterally, suggesting coordination with Gulf Arab allies, particularly Saudi Arabia, which has yet to formally recognise Israel. The initiative follows the 2020 Abraham Accords, brokered by former US President Donald Trump, which saw the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco normalise relations with Israel. The upcoming summits aim to build on these efforts while addressing Palestinian statehood. – AFP

Israeli airstrikes hit Syrian military HQ in Damascus amid tensions

DAMASCUS: Israeli forces conducted fresh airstrikes near the Syrian army and defence ministry headquarters on Wednesday, according to state-run television. The escalation follows Israel's warning to Damascus over targeting the Druze community in southern Syria. Syrian state television reported the strikes occurred near Umayyad Square, close to the military headquarters in central Damascus. Al Jazeera's live broadcast captured multiple explosions, with smoke rising from the damaged building. Earlier, Syrian government forces had clashed with Druze fighters in Sweida city, an area previously under Druze control. The Israeli military confirmed targeting the headquarters, while Syria's health ministry reported nine injuries. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning, stating, 'The signals to Damascus are over -- now come the painful blows.' He emphasised that Israel would act forcefully in Sweida to push back forces involved in attacks on the Druze. The latest strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and Syria, with regional stability at risk. – AFP
