LAGOS - Nigeria's former president Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in London, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
His family confirmed the death on Sunday through a statement issued by his spokesperson Garba Shehu, who said Buhari passed away at a clinic in London. Born on Dec 17, 1942, Buhari was among the key figures in the December 1983 military coup that overthrew Nigeria's Second Republic. At the time, he was serving as General Officer Commanding the Third Armoured Division in Jos.
Following the coup, Buhari assumed power and appointed Tunde Idiagbon as Chief of General Staff, effectively the second-in-command.
The coup marked the end of Nigeria's Second Republic, which had restored multi-party democracy in 1979 after 13 years of military rule.
Buhari contested the presidency several times as a civilian, under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003 and 2007, and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011.
In 2014, he became the presidential candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC) and won the 2015 general election, defeating then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. It was the first time an incumbent president in Nigeria had lost a re-election bid.
Buhari was sworn in on May 29, 2015, and secured a second term in 2019 after defeating former vice-president Atiku Abubakar by over three million votes.

PARIS: A high-level diplomatic summit to advance Palestinian statehood recognition and regional peace efforts will take place in September, a French diplomatic source confirmed. The talks, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, aim to revive long-stalled negotiations for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Originally scheduled for mid-June, the conference was postponed due to Israel's military actions against Iran. It has now been rescheduled for July 28 and 29 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where foreign ministers will lay the groundwork. The September meeting, expected to include heads of state, will likely be held in Paris or New York ahead of the UN General Assembly on September 22. The French diplomatic source stated that the July discussions will focus on 'advancing the recognition of a Palestinian state by countries that have not yet done so, including France.' Additionally, the talks will address 'normalisation and Israel's regional integration with Arab and Muslim nations.' France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot will attend the July meeting. Israeli airstrikes hit Syrian military HQ in Damascus amid tensions
DAMASCUS: Israeli forces conducted fresh airstrikes near the Syrian army and defence ministry headquarters on Wednesday, according to state-run television. The escalation follows Israel's warning to Damascus over targeting the Druze community in southern Syria. Syrian state television reported the strikes occurred near Umayyad Square, close to the military headquarters in central Damascus. Al Jazeera's live broadcast captured multiple explosions, with smoke rising from the damaged building.
