Hot-air balloon crash in Brazil kills at least eight people
At least eight people are dead following an accident involving a hot air balloon in Brazil's southern region of Santa Catarina on Saturday, according to the local governor.
'We are all shocked by the accident involving a balloon in Praia Grande, this Saturday morning. Our rescue team is already on site… So far, we have confirmed eight deaths,' local governor Jorginho Mello said on X.
He said 21 people were on board; the other 13 survived.
Video posted to social media shows a hot air balloon catching fire while in the sky.
The balloon then deflates and falls to the ground.
'We saw two people fall from above, and soon after the basket broke, and the balloon fell,' an eyewitness told local media outlet Jornal Razão.
The eyewitness said she ran to see where the balloon fell and saw two survivors, 'a woman covered in mud and in a state of shock, and a man with her who was limping,' as well as two bodies.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims on X.
'I would like to place the Federal Government at the disposal of the victims and the state and municipal forces that are working on the rescue and care for the survivors,' he said.
Praia Grande is a common destination for hot-air ballooning, a popular activity in some parts of Brazil's south during June festivities that celebrate Catholic saints such as Saint John, the Associated Press news agency reports.
'My solidarity with the city of Praia Grande… We are in mourning. It's a tragedy that happened. We will check the developments, what happened, and why it happened,' Mello said in a video statement on X.
According to CNN Brasil, Saturday's incident was the third involving a hot-air balloon in Brazil in less than a week.
Last Sunday, a balloon carrying 35 people – which did not have authorization to fly – fell in São Paulo. One person died and the pilot was arrested.
Last Thursday, another balloon fell on the coast of São Paulo, although no serious damage was caused and no homes were hit.

Jillian McLoglin sacked from St Columba's College for slapping student's hand

An educator who slapped a student on the hand and a human resources manager accused of financial misconduct have both been recently sacked by two leading Melbourne Catholic colleges, court documents reveal. The first is Jillian McLoghlin, a long-serving science technician from St Columba's College in Essendon, and the second is Greg Pargeter, a human resources manager from Mazenod College. A Fair Work Commission unfair dismissal ruling indicates Ms McLoghlin lost her job at the Essendon Catholic girls' school after she was accused of arguing and forcefully slapping a student during a year 9 biology dissection class. Ms McLoghlin admitted to the slap in August last year but said she was trying to protect the student and it was just 'one little incident'. She denied she was arguing with the student but admitted the class had not been following her instructions which had made her cross. Ms McLoghlin claimed she was unfairly dismissed and sought compensation, but the Fair Work Commission ruled last week her sacking was justified. In his ruling, deputy president Alan Colman said video clearly showed the teacher slapping the student. 'Ms McLoghlin turns to her and slaps her hand — A loud smack can be heard,' Mr Colman said. 'The student then recoils, and says, 'Oh my God'. The slap was forceful. 'I find that the reason for which Ms McLoghlin slapped Student A's hand was that she was cross with her. It had nothing to do with safety. 'In this day and age, it is difficult to imagine situations in which it would be appropriate for a teacher or a school assistant to slap the hand of a student,' he said St Columba's College principal Rita Grima, said the school supported the decision of the deputy president Coleman. 'Child safety is paramount. We want a school culture where children are safe and feel safe,' she said. It comes as Mr Pargeter, the human resources and policy manager at Mazenod College since 2018, was terminated on April 11 this year due to alleged misconduct. According to an interim court ruling Mr Pargeter denies he falsified a variation in his employment contract which gave him a financial benefit. His claim for unfair dismissal was given the green light to proceed by Commissioner Radford despite being filed two days late. Mr Pargeter is being supported in his case by Justin Cooney, a lawyer with the Independent Education Union. Mr Pargeter's LinkedIn page says he formerly worked at the Catholic Education Office, in the electorate office of MP Kelvin Thompson and as a senior industrial officer for the United Firefighters Union and the Health Services Union. He was also a teacher at Ferntree Gully Technical School (later Glenfern Secondary College ) and Boronia Heights Secondary College. He is still registered as a non-practicing teacher. In 2008 Mr Pargeter was preselected for the Labor Party in the federal seat of La Trobe but was ousted by the party's federal executive after what he called a 'highly personal campaign of smear and denigration'. He is the son of the late mayor of the City of Berwick, Syd Pargeter, OAM, a well-respected long-serving councillor. A spokeswoman for Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, which runs Mazenod College, confirmed Mr Pargeter is a former employee who is 'asserting his rights under the Fair Work Act'. 'We respect the commission's processes and will participate fully,' she said. About 796 dead babies expected to be found hidden in septic tank at unwed mothers' home run by nuns in Tuam, Ireland
Excavation has begun on a septic tank at a site in Ireland that authorities believe contains the remains of nearly 800 dead babies and children who died at a home for unwed mothers run by Catholic nuns. Many of the infant remains are feared to have been dumped in the cesspool known as 'the pit' at the former institution in the small town of Tuam, County Galway, local historian Catherine Corless told Sky News. In total, 798 children died at the home between 1925 and its closure in 1961, of which just two were buried in a nearby cemetery, Corless' research found. The other 796 children's remains are believed to be under the site of the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home, which was demolished in 1971 and is now surrounded by a modern apartment complex. Bon Secours, known locally as The Home, was a maternity home for unmarried mothers and their children, run by a religious order of Catholic nuns. Unmarried pregnant women would be sent to the home to give birth and would be interned for a year to do unpaid work. They were separated from their newborn children, who would be raised by the nuns until they were adopted, often without the consent of their families. The full scale of the tragedy at Bon Secours was only uncovered in 2014 thanks to Corless's findings. Now, finally, more than a decade on, a team of investigators began their forensic investigation this week. It is expected to take up to two years to identify the remains of the infants and give them a dignified reburial and offer some degree of closure to survivors. 'I don't care if it's a thimbleful, as they tell me there wouldn't be much remains left; at six months old, it's mainly cartilage more than bone,' Annette McKay, whose sister is believed to be one of the 798 victims, told Sky News. Her mother, Margaret 'Maggie' O'Connor gave birth to a baby, Mary Margaret, at the home after she was raped at the age of 17. The girl died six months later, and her mother only found out when a nun told her. 'She was pegging washing out and a nun came up behind her and said 'the child of your sin is dead,'' said Annette, who now lives in the UK. Bon Secours was just one institution that made up a network of oppression in Ireland, the true extent of which has only been revealed in recent years. Mothers at Bon Secours who 'reoffended' by having more children out of wedlock would be sent to Magdalene laundries, the infamous Irish institutions for so-called 'fallen women,' usually run by Catholic orders but quietly supported by the state. Originally the term 'fallen women' was applied mostly to sex workers, but the Magdalene laundries would come to take in 'seduced' women, victims of rape and incest, and female orphans or children abandoned or abused by their families. The last of the Magdalene laundries only closed their doors in the 1990s. Ireland's government issued a formal state apology in 2014 and, in 2022, a compensation scheme was set up which has so far paid out the equivalent of $32.7 million to 814 survivors. The religious orders that operated many of the laundries have rejected appeals from victims and Ireland's Justice Minister to contribute to the program.
