47 Wexford groups to avail of grant to promote physical activity in older residents

The Grant Scheme is a combined initiative from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland with funding provided by the Government of Ireland.
While it is funding €300,000 to 988 groups around the country overall, 47 groups in Wexford will be receiving €13,530. These range from Active Retirement Groups, ICAs, Men's/Women's Sheds, Physical Activity Leaders (PALs), care settings and other sports and social groups.
Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan said: 'As outlined in the Programme for Government and the National Sports Policy 2018-2027, increased participation in sport by all is a key objective for this Government. As such, we are committed to a Sport for All approach aimed at ensuring that all persons have the opportunity to partake equally in sport and physical activity, regardless of age or social-economic status.
Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy, Charlie McConalogue higlighted the importance of this partnership.
"The continued collaboration between Sport Ireland and such organisations plays a vital part in the Department's ongoing commitment to create opportunities in people's everyday lives to exercise more.'
According to Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May, by financially supporting organisations to buy equipment and host activities specifically designed for older people, the grant helps older people reap the health benefits of being active.
"Being active is the key to healthy aging, and this funding is vital in building an Ireland where older adults have more opportunities to stay active and socially connected. Sport Ireland's Local Sports Partnerships do tremendous work in encouraging people to get involved in physical activity as a means of promoting a healthy lifestyle – and the Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme will allow them to continue to work in that area,' she said.
'We know from the Irish Sport Monitor report that participation levels among older people are on the rise so it's important that there are opportunities for people over the age of 50 to be involved in a variety of sports. It makes a real difference in our communities.'
And while Sue Guildea, Active Programme Manager at Age & Opportunity, welcomed the news, she emphasised that there is still much more to be done.
"While we celebrate the progress made, there is always more to be done. Our commitment to advocating for policies and initiatives that empower older people remains steadfast,' she added.

Concern over state of slip-ways at National Rowing Centre raised at AGM

However, Williams said that rowing must continue to maintain and stretch the standards. 'That's the passport to continuing to be supported.' After some lively discussion at the Sport Ireland campus, the 38 delegates passed just three of the proposed rule changes. They reinstated the men's novice eight for the Irish Championships; tightened rules on club rowers competing overseas and allowed a later entry date for competitions. Hugh Carvill, ex-Queen's University and a member of Lady Victoria and Neptune, was elected company secretary. The one controversy of the day came right at the end. Chief executive Michelle Carpenter had spoken of the recent success at the European Championships and the very welcome improvements to the National Rowing Centre, and the prospect of new staff members. She said that improvement to the slips at the National Rowing Centre, from which rowers race, was 'a long-term project'. Skibbereen delegate and former board member TJ Ryan said that the slips issue must be addressed, as events could not be held if the current situation continued. 'If we can't run an event due to the slips being inoperable we are letting down the athletes.' The ESB controls the lake on which the course is laid, and Carpenter told the Irish Independent that 'factors beyond our control' were relevant in the slips issue, where the pontoons are not meeting the high level of the water. She said the ESB had a remit to keep the fish alive and to retain sufficient water for drinking. Rowing Ireland was working with them. There are worries about the upcoming Cork regatta. 'We will do everything in our power to make it work,' Carpenter said. International competition for Ireland continues next weekend. Para rower Tiarnán O'Donnell will compete at the World Cup regatta in Varese in Italy from June 13 to 15. He is the sole entry for the Ireland team, which will travel in numbers to the final World Cup in Lucerne from June 27 to 29.

The Irish Independent's View: Great shame we do not have the legislation needed to underpin vital care of older people

One of the critical failings exposed then was the complete lack of focus in government agencies towards meeting the complex needs of older people. Then as now, they remain the key adult demographic for health and social care services. To hear two decades later that patients can still be badly mistreated, having their dignity and most basic needs ignored, is a terrible indictment of the State's commitment to the care of the very people who served it all their lives. Mr O'Donnell said there is a commitment for a national policy on safeguarding for adults in the Programme for Government and he wants this brought to the Cabinet before the summer recess. Most people will be astonished such a policy is not in place to protect people who may be vulnerable. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has said the Government is committed to developing the policy. But what does it say about respect for our people that such critical protections have not already been built into the infrastructure of care? Unless agencies have the necessary legal powers to enforce compliance, the potential for abuse will continue 'Even if there is one person being abused, that is a serious incident that should be followed up immediately,' said Safeguarding Ireland chairperson Patricia Rickard-Clarke. She appealed to the Government to implement the recommendations of the Law Reform Commission's report from last year. This would put a critical legal framework in place, she said. Former INMO chief Liam Doran said he felt shame, sadness, frustration and anger over the revelations in the RTÉ report. 'Looking at people who have served this country, have worked for this country and have shown fortitude much more than the modern generation, and that's how we treat them. Shame, shame on all of us,' he said. We have waited too long for the vital legislation needed to underpin the care of older people. Unless agencies have the necessary legal powers to enforce compliance, the potential for abuse will continue. Seán Moynihan of charity Alone has expressed fears that Ireland is 'walking into the privatisation of nursing homes', where economics seems more important than the rights of the older person. For older people to be left frightened by institutional failings is indefensible. German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote: 'The first 40 years of life give us the text – the next 30 supply the commentary on it.' And what a sad commentary it is on our society that once again we have been found wanting when it comes to taking care of our older citizens. There are no excuses and no exceptions, for as the poet Gertrude Stein put it: 'We are always the same age inside.'
