SAN DIEGO — Toko Koga scored early in the second half and Japan handed the United States its first loss under Coach Emma Hayes with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night in the SheBelieves Cup title game.
The Americans had not lost since last February when they fell, 2-0, to Mexico in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The loss also snapped the U.S. team's string of five titles in the SheBelieves Cup, now in its 10th year.

With U.S. decision looming, Rory McIlroy explains why he turned down future playing captaincy

Rory McIlroy doesn't think it's feasible to be a successful playing captain at the Ryder Cup in the modern era, and it's why he's as intrigued as anyone to how the formation of the U.S. team will unfold. McIlroy said Wednesday he's already turned down the opportunity 'straight away' to serve as a future playing captain – most likely in two years' time at Adare Manor in Ireland – because he believed the dual responsibilities would be too much to handle. 'The commitments that a captain has the week of: the extra media that the captain has to do, the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony – there's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big,' McIlroy said. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible to do. But how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in. 'Then the captain isn't going to be on the course all day, so really the captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well? There's a lot of different things that go into it – and, look, it's just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do.' And that, of course, is the complicated position that Keegan Bradley finds himself in for the Americans. McIlroy said that Bradley, who was stunningly named as the U.S. captain last summer, is 'definitely' one of the 12 best American players right now. Bradley is currently No. 10 in the team standings, on the strength of his victory in June at the Travelers Championship (when McIlroy was grouped with him during the first two rounds), heading into the final week of automatic qualifying. Earlier this week, both Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler voiced their support for a potential Bradley playing captaincy. 'I don't think you're going to find any or many Americans that are going to argue that he shouldn't be on the team,' Fowler said. Bradley, who at No. 14 in the FedExCup standings is assured of playing next week at East Lake, will make his six captain's picks following the Tour Championship. 'That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case,' McIlroy said. 'I'm just as interested as everyone else to see how it all plays out.'

Why Keegan Bradley can thank Jack Nicklaus for chance at being a Ryder Cup playing captain

Ewan Murray joins Golf Today to compare Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald's differing tasks in selecting Ryder Cup rosters. OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Keegan Bradley has the support of key players and the opportunity to become the first playing captain in the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer in 1963 at East Lake. And it's all because of Jack Nicklaus. After the Americans won at East Lake against Great Britain & Ireland — back then it wasn't much of a competition — the PGA of America's executive committee changed the bylaws so that a captain could not play. It felt the captain's duties were too extensive. Fast forward to Dec. 16, 1982, when the PGA of America appointed 42-year-old Jack Nicklaus to be the U.S. captain. The committee voted unanimously to allow a captain to play. There were no captain's picks for the 1983 matches at PGA National. The PGA Championship winner was guaranteed a spot on the team and Nicklaus nearly pulled that off, finishing one shot behind Hal Sutton at Riviera. Captain's picks have been introduced, but the rule was left in place for a playing captain. Bradley would have to win the BMW Championship for any chance at the six automatic spots, but there's that small issue of whether he should pick himself. Xander Schauffele has told Bradley he needs to bring his clubs to Bethpage Black for the Sept. 26-28 matches. Patrick Cantlay on Tuesday said, 'If I was captain, I'd pick Keegan.' 'I think he's definitely one of the best American players, and his results have shown that,' Cantlay said at Caves Valley. Golf Channel Staff, Bradley has said he would take it up with the assistant captains and the six automatic qualifiers, the same way he would consider other players as picks. He doesn't make his picks until Aug. 27, after the Tour Championship, giving Bradley two weeks of high-end competition. He currently is No. 10 in the standings. As for the automatic six picks, Scottie Scheffler, Schauffele and J.J. Spaun are mathematically secured to make the team. They are followed by Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau and Harris English, with Justin Thomas just outside the top six.

Could Sixers have two stars represent Team USA in 2028 Olympics?

The Philadelphia 76ers had Joel Embiid represent them in the 2024 Olympics as he helped Team USA win another gold medal in Paris, France. The big fella played a big role in Team USA's comeback win over Serbia as he made some big plays down the stretch to help the Americans get the job done. As the 2028 Olympics are now the focus, one has to wonder if the Sixers will have a couple of representatives on Team USA. Embiid will be 34 when the Games begin, but there is no guarantee that he will participate due to his age and injury history. CBS Sports does predict that Embiid will play for Team USA in 2028: We're going to choose to be optimistic here and say that Embiid will be healthy enough to contribute to Team USA in 2028. He was dominant in limited minutes in Paris, playing a major part in the Americans' fourth-quarter comeback to beat Serbia in the semifinal. While Embiid could be a lock for Team USA should he be healthy, the Sixers could also have Tyrese Maxey represent the Americans. He will be 27 when the Games roll around and he will be among a talented guard crop that will include the likes of Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, Cade Cunningham, Devin Booker, Donovan Mitchell, and others to choose from. With that being said, if Embiid or Maxey, or both, get chosen for Team USA, it will be a big challenge to win another gold medal. The rest of the world is catching up as the Americans certainly had a few close calls in the 2024 gold medal run.
