
Beyoncé's Grammy Award for country music was historic, overdue and well-deserved
Good morning, and Happy Black History Month!
A new meme emerged last Sunday, during the broadcast of the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.
It was of Beyoncé, mouth agape after "Cowboy Carter" was announced as the winner of the Country Album of the Year Award. She was seemingly so unprepared, so shocked by the news, that she didn't even realize the underwires of her dress were poking out.
She was right to be surprised — and not just because she publicly stated that "Cowboy Carter" was not, in fact, a country album.
Beyoncé wasn't just the first Black woman to win the award, she was the first Black artist, period. What's more: She was the first Black artist to even be nominated in the category.
There's some necessary context here: After being presented in 1965 and 1966 as the Best Country & Western Album, the award was discontinued until the 1995 Grammy ceremony.
This 30-year period covered Charley Pride's peak — an insane run from the late 1960s through the early 1980s that netted Pride 29 No. 1 singles.
The award was in place, however, when Darius Rucker transitioned from lead singer of the southern rock band Hootie and the Blowfish to a top-selling solo country act. But despite his own successes — including the platinum-selling "True Believers" album, which featured his smash hit 'Wagon Wheel' and, like 'Country Carter,' rose to No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart — Rucker was never nominated for a Country Album of the Year Grammy.
Because of the nature of the Recording Academy's screening and nomination process, it's difficult to say where Rucker's Grammy hopes were been dashed. Perhaps folks in the initial screening room determined that the album failed to meet some benchmark for consideration.
Or maybe he cleared that hurdle but failed to garner enough support when Grammy voters whittled the list of eligible projects down to the five or six final nominees.
And that's to say nothing, of course, about the fact that Rucker is, for all intents and purposes, the only reasonable option for Black representation in the category.
Because Black artists have been so systematically eliminated from the genre, there are only a handful who've been able to gain the sort of traction that begets a Grammy nod. Factor in the three decades when the Country Album of the Year Award wasn't handed out (encompassing most of Pride's career and all of Linda Martell's) and the list of potentially eligible Black artists for that Award gets even smaller.
After last week's Grammys, folks took to social media to share their thoughts — many of them denouncing Beyoncé's Country Album win. They believe the decision was political, that she'd somehow strongarmed voters, and that the album, a mix of varying styles of music, shouldn't have even been considered.
Beyoncé was clear that she didn't consider her "Cowboy Carter" a traditional country album. Nonetheless, a screening room of industry experts decided it should be considered, and Grammy members voted for it twice — to make the final nomination list and to win the ultimate award.
Were they strongarmed? Who's to say. What's more likely, in my opinion, is that voters wanted to make a statement about musical genres and the unwritten rules that have long determined who gets to participate in them.And in that case, Beyoncé's win is political.
It's also Black History.
What else should you read this week?
For my column, I wrote about the importance of Black History Month, and the need to look beyond the achievements of a few notable African Americans. In this second Trump era, the most valuable lessons are in the day-to-day lives of common Black folk, who pushed on and never gave up, no matter the political climate.
USA Today's Kofi Mframa argues that the Recording Academy 'finally [got] it right' in naming 'Cowboy Carter' Album of the Year. In her piece, she considers Beyoncé's full body of work, arguing that 'she should've collected this accolade many times before.'
Finally, James Causey of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offered his take on Snoop Dogg's performance at a Trump inauguration event, citing Malcolm X's position that Black celebrities, while popular, are often unfit as leaders of the community.

Out in Ohio: How Granville, Grove City and Gahanna are celebrating Pride 2025
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Organizers behind Pride Month festivals in Granville, Grove City and Gahanna join NBC4's LGBTQ+ show 'Out in Ohio' to talk about how they're bringing the celebration to your neighborhood. Digital Reporter David Rees hosts 'Out in Ohio' and chats with Granville Pride president Mark Carr, Pride in Grove City board chair Leslie Anderson, and Gahanna Pride founder Katie McBroom. 'Pride Act' aims to protect Ohio parents with LGBTQ+ children Carr explains that Granville Pride grew from a 2021 resolution passed by the village council denouncing discrimination based on sexual orientation. But, that effort was met with resistance from certain residents and business owners who protested the village's first Pride festival that year. 'It was a positive thing that the village had done, but it really did then allow the other side of the coin to come out as well,' Carr said. 'We've had protestors every single year, but the majority of Granville believes in equality for all.' Since then, Granville Pride has only grown. While that first year drew about 700 attendees, the festival has steadily increased, with more than 1,000 participants in 2022 and about 2,000 in 2023 and 2024. This year's festival on Denison's front lawn on June 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. is expected to be Granville's biggest yet, Carr said. 'I believe that Granville was waiting for the opportunity to show their support,' Carr said. 'Pride actually gives many, many in Granville and the surrounding counties a place to come and support people like me and my husband and my family.' Beyond the festival, Granville Pride also facilitates an 'allies directory' that Carr said makes it easier for LGBTQ+ Ohioans to decide where to shop, eat and visit when they're in the village. If they see an 'ally' sticker on the door or on a business website, visitors can trust they are entering a LGBTQ-safe environment. Nissan, Walmart dial back Stonewall Columbus sponsorships for Pride 2025 '[It] came out of, again, that very first negative reaction [in 2021] that we got from a business owner in the village, and so we said, we're no longer going to spend our dollar at establishments that don't support us,' Carr said. 'So, we developed the Granville Pride business ally and it is a large, large list and growing every single day.' Like many other Pride organizers in central Ohio, Granville Pride has experienced a change in sponsorships as corporations reevaluate donations related to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Still, Carr said the festival has received increased funding from first-time sponsors. 'We have new people who are stepping up because they see the increased need,' Carr said. 'As I converse with other Pride organizers, it's sorta the same thing, where some of the old sponsors are no longer there, the bigger corporate ones, but the local-owned businesses are stepping up to fill in that gap.' Anderson explains that Pride in Grove City is also young and grew as other central Ohio suburbs established their own festivals after the COVID-19 pandemic. While Grove City's past three festivals were held in October or September to allow for more flexibility with vendors and other resources, the organization has moved the celebration to June this year. 'Switching to June this year felt like the right time to make that shift and align with national Pride Month and be more a part of the boarder celebration,' Anderson said. Stonewall Columbus gets ready for Pride 2025 Anderson said this year's festival on June 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Town Center Park will be 'a vibrant Pride fest with something for everyone,' including a live DJ, local performers, a special appearance from the gay men's chorus, food trucks and an expanded resource fair. Anderson noted that a protest by a hate group at last year's Pride festival was difficult for Grove City's LGBTQ+ community, but an outpouring of support strengthened the organization's commitment to foster a safe and joyful space, she said. 'The overwhelming support from the community showed that hate doesn't have a place here in Grove City,' Anderson said. 'With the changes we're facing this year in national politics, uniting with our allies feels more important than ever this year.' A member of the Gahanna community for years, McBroom said she wanted to create Gahanna Pride after she saw a need for 'visibility, celebration, and a safe space for residents and youth.' What started as a small effort has grown into a city-wide event, she said. 'We have a huge outpouring of support of local businesses, families, allies that really affirmed Gahanna really needs this and we're ready for this,' McBroom said. 'It's about building the community and showing that inclusion and love really is what we have here in Gahanna.' List: 2025 Pride Month events, festivals in central Ohio This year's festival on June 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Headley Park features live drag shows, a DJ, food trucks, various vendors, family-friendly games, a bounce house, face painting and more. Like other central Ohio Pride festivals, Gahanna has also felt hesitation from some sponsors this year. McBroom said it's pushed the organization to be 'more intentional and bold about how we show up.' 'We really just wanna show up about love, support, joy for everybody,' McBroom said. 'Pride's about visibility and resilience, and that's especially important for us this year, and that's how we're gonna show up.' While McBroom didn't set out to be a driving force for Gahanna Pride, she said organizing the festival has been one of the most fulfilling things she's ever done. 'To know that I have helped to create a safe space, it's kind of emotional to think about it,' McBroom said. 'It's been really incredible and I'm super excited to see what's to come.' The 13-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay Z took home the Young Stars Award for a second year in a row at the 25th BET Awards. The awards show, dubbed culture's biggest night, took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 9. The YoungStars Award honors young entertainers who have had an impact in television, film, music or sports. Akira Akbar, Graceyn 'Gracie' Hollingsworth, Heiress Harris, Melody Hurd, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Tyrik Johnson and VanVan were among those nominated. Last year, Blue Ivy also took home the prize. Beyoncé also received two nominations at this year awards. She was up for album of the year for her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter." Her song "Blackbiird," featuring Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts, also received a nomination for the BETHer Award. The song is a cover of the Beatles' 1968 tune, which was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. The category honors motivational and empowering songs that center women. The 35-time Grammy-winning singer didn't take home any awards this year. As fans know, Beyoncé first released the eighth studio album in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. She became the first Black woman to win best country album and album of the year at the 2025 Grammys. She kicked off her "Cowboy Carter" tour — a spectacle filled with fashion, multiple music genres and cultural commentary — April 28 in Los Angeles. Blue Ivy has been blowing fans away with her stellar dance moves and has taken a lead role on her mom's Cowboy Carter and Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. Many have been raving online about her performances, and her she's certainly shown that she has what it takes to step up to the plate — even approving the title manager Blue. Beyoncé is currently on the international leg of her tour. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Taylor Swift files restraining order against man who claims she had his baby
Taylor Swift has been granted a temporary restraining order against a Colorado man who insisted she's the mother of his child. The pop star filed the order alleging that Brian Jason Wagner "made various statements about living at my property"; "being in a relationship with me"; believing I am the mother of his son"; and "needing to see me in person", according to documents obtained by Page Six. "All of which are untrue and disconnected from reality." Swift claimed Wagner first turned up at her Los Angeles home in 2024 and returned several times that July. "On at least one of the occasions in July 2024, Mr Wagner was carrying a glass bottle that could have been used as a weapon," the documents read. The Lover singer claimed Wagner again visited her home in May 2025, stating he "was there checking on a friend (again, this is entirely untrue)". Swift's security team uncovered that Wagner had been in jail and had allegedly written lengthy letters to the Grammy winner about his infatuation with her, a romantic relationship with her (which does not exist), and other fabricated stories about his involvement in Swift's personal life. The filing states that Wagner allegedly found a way to put the Cruel Summer singer's address on his driver's license and attempted to send her mail to his home. The temporary restraining order was granted on Monday and will expire on 30 June.
