Arsenal icon tired of club's failures and urges them to act this summer
Emmanuel Petit feels Arsenal have failed at the highest level and he is tired of it, urging the club to strengthen in the summer and saying they must not lose any of their best players.
The Gunners have undoubtedly improved under the management of Mikel Arteta, but their only major piece of silverware since he took over remains the 2020 FA Cup.
While they have challenged for the Premier League title under his stewardship, their last triumph remains back in 2004, with Liverpool managing to break the stranglehold of Manchester City this season as the Gunners fell short.
Petit, who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998, says it is time for the club to take the next step and establish itself among the most dominant in Europe.
While the Gunners are clearly operating at a very high level, the Frenchman feels the fact they are not among the elite in terms of silverware represents a frustrating failure.

The World Cup winner believes Arteta absolutely must keep hold of William Saliba this summer and add to his squad as well.
'Arsenal are still second and got to the semi-final of the Champions League so it's about what happens next in the transfer market,' Petit told Casinozonderlimiet.
'The club needs to bring in top players and keep hold of their best players like William Saliba, who Real Madrid want.
'Saliba needs to stay and the team needs reinforcement so they can have a better rotation, better quality on the bench because they are losing the big fights.
'After we lost against Paris Saint-Germain, the fans were mocking Arsenal because of that. It's the same in England, you know, Arsenal are a good team, a good club, but everyone says that they are not one of the top clubs in Europe in terms of history.
'That's because they have failed and I'm tired of it. This team needs to change the situation and win something, they need to compete until the end and not just at the start.'
Petit has set his former club a huge task, saying they must win the Champions League for the first time in their history to change the narrative around their status.
'They need to get back to the days of 25 years ago and be the team to beat, clubs were scared to play against us and we won titles and got to finals, we put in the steps but that was it,' he said.
'Arsenal need to improve season after season and win the Champions League to prove people wrong.'
Real Madrid's pursuit of Saliba is a real concern for Petit, who feels it would be a huge step back for the Gunners if they were to lose his compatriot.
'If you want to compete with the best clubs in Europe, you have to improve your squad every season and that happens by keeping hold of your best players,' he said. More Trending
'If Arsenal were to lose William Saliba, it would remind me of the days they needed money after moving to the Emirates, they don't need to do that anymore.
'Arsenal have the cash to spend and they need to build on their current team and add strikers and wingers while keeping hold of their defenders.
'The defence has been their strength in the last three or four seasons, one of the best defences in Europe. If they sign forwards but sell defenders, what is the point?'

Kasey McAteer scores as Republic of Ireland and Senegal play out draw in Dublin
The Irish delivered a performance full of industry in their first-ever encounter with the Senegalese at the Aviva Stadium. Leicester's McAteer and Ipswich's Jack Taylor made their first starts for Ireland with head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson looking at his options ahead of the beginning of the World Cup qualifying campaign in September. Senegal, ranked 19th by FIFA, some 41 places higher than the Republic, named an experimental side with only two starters remaining from their recent World Cup qualifying win over Togo. The west African side started brightly, controlling possession in the early stages and keeping the pressure on Ireland with two corners. However, Ireland grew in stature throughout the first half and opened the scoring through McAteer in the 21st minute when Senegal failed to clear a corner. Ryan Manning crossed and Nathan Collins headed it on to McAteer. His initial header was wonderfully saved by Yehvann Diouf, but the forward kept his composure to control the rebound and fire it home. The Irish stayed on the front foot for the rest of the half, showing good energy as they moved the ball quickly between defence and attack, seeming to rattle the Senegalese, who were defending a 20-match unbeaten run. Ireland's Player of the Match against Senegal is our goalscorer – Kasey McAteer! 🇮🇪 — Ireland Football ⚽️🇮🇪 (@IrelandFootball) June 6, 2025 Antoine Mendy had the visitors' best chance of the half, but he screwed his shot from the edge of the box high and wide. Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, recently signed by Brentford from Liverpool, had virtually nothing to do before the break. The second half started in similar positive fashion for Ireland and Southampton's Will Smallbone should have doubled their lead but shot straight at the keeper. Ryan Manning attempted to fire in the rebound but it was brilliantly blocked by Mendy. With the game opening up, Senegal almost equalised moments later when Kelleher got the faintest of touches onto Krepin Diatta's header which crashed against the crossbar. After the hour mark, both sides made a series of changes, with Senegal introducing promising 21-year-old Lamine Camara, who has already played in the Champions League for Monaco, and Crystal Palace's FA Cup winner Ismaila Sarr. Camara almost made an immediate impact when his shot was deflected onto a post before being scrambled away by Kelleher. The threat from Senegal grew as the game wore on. However Ismail Jakob's ambitious effort to score from outside the box sailed high over the bar. The Irish invited pressure by defending deeper late in the second half. McAteer, who had run tirelessly throughout, was replaced in the 80th minute as was Smallbone as the Republic turned towards fresh legs. However, Senegal's pressure told when substitute Sarr poked home in the 82nd minute shortly after Kelleher had saved with his feet. Senegal had a free-kick on the edge of the box deep in injury time as tempers flared between the two teams, but Camara failed to get it over the defending wall. The match did not have the feel of a friendly as both Ireland and Senegal went for the win, but ultimately both will be satisfied with the draw.

Ex-Man Utd star to reunite with Greenwood after missing out on dream return
Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes will link up with Mason Greenwood after sealing a shock transfer to Marseille. The England midfielder was out of contract this summer. He had been linked with a return to Old Trafford, while Premier League rivals Tottenham and West Ham were also credited with an interest. Despite that, Gomes has chosen to move elsewhere. According to RMC Sport, he is set to move to the French giants, who have offered the midfielder a three-year deal at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes has agreed to the move having been convinced by Roberto De Zerbi's style of play, while the chance to play in the Champions League proved difficult to turn down. Gomes will link up with former United teammate and fellow academy graduate Greenwood with his new employers. The striker moved to France permanently last summer and went on to score 22 goals across his debut campaign. Greenwood has been linked with a move of his own amid reported interest from Barcelona but has expressed his desire to remain with Marseille. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League. 'All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective." Gomes, 24, has been with Lille since leaving Old Trafford in 2021. The four-time England international has gone on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring on ten occasions. Speaking previously, he admitted that he would potentially be open to a return to United. As quoted by L'Equipe, he said: 'It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. "I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that's what convinced me to move - the faith Lille had in me. "Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it's home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."
