He was slammed by a watchdog for letting a bullying row damage his African youth charity.
Harry, 40, set up the charity in 2006 in memory of his mum, Princess Diana, for young people and kids living with HIV and Aids.
But he stepped down from his position - alongside co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho - in March earlier this year.
The pair publicly fell out with Dr Sophie Chandauka, a Zimbabwe-born lawyer, who was selected to be chair of the trustees last year.
Now, royal author Phil Dampier has told The Sun the situation is a "total mess".
He said: "His charity commission report has blamed both sides, both Harry and the former trustees, and the former chairwoman, mainly for airing their dirty linen in public.
"While it is a valid criticism, this doesn't solve the problem."
Mr Dampier noted that if Harry hadn't spent so much time trying to impress in the world of showbiz and celebrities, things may have turned out differently.
He added: "The chairwoman didn't think that polo matches and Harry playing polo in glamorous locations was a good idea.
"I don't understand why Harry couldn't talk to her more about it and deal with it. If he spent less time in court and going to showbiz and sporting events in California, he would have had the time to deal with it.
Mr Dampier added: "I think he has to share a lot of the blame for not being hands-on enough with this charity. He's taken his eye off the ball and now he's walked away, which is quite sad really.

"There's a bit of a pattern forming with Harry - when the going gets tough, he walks away. With Megxit, with the decision to leave the Royal Family, and now with a charity which is theoretically very close to his heart.
"It was founded to honour the memory of his mother. The name actually means 'forget me not'.
It is the latest in a long line of "childish" reactions to things not going his way.
The expert added: "It's quite a childish reaction, he's just flounced off really. He's thrown his toys out of the pram because he hasn't got his way.
"This is part of the problem with both him and Meghan, nothing is ever their fault. They never accept the blame, they always try and blame others."
Earlier this year, Harry lost his publicly-funded security appeal in a humiliating blow after moaning "my life is at stake" - and faced a £1.5million legal bill.
Harry also bizarrely claimed stripping him of his security was a plot to force him and Meghan Markle back to Britain.
'ROLL UP HIS SLEEVES'
The royal author continued: "It's quite a mess, it's a pattern that's developing. It's sad to see - I don't think he's the brightest knife in the drawer.
"He tends to just flounce off in a bit off a huff, and that's not benefiting anyone. He really needs to roll up his sleeves.
"You can't imagine Princess Anne not going to meetings, not getting involved with the nitty gritty of her charity.
"With Harry it seems he likes to dip in and out and do the occasional photo, and that's not really enough."
The Duke's spokesperson said he would find alternatives to helping the children supported by Sentebale in Lesotho and Botswana.
They said: "As custodians of this once brilliant charity, Prince Seeiso, Prince Harry and the former board of trustees helped grow Sentebale from the seed of an idea to - like its namesake - a flowering force for good.
"With the original mission of Sentebale firmly in mind - and in honour of the legacy he and Prince Seeiso began - the Duke of Sussex will now focus on finding new ways to continue supporting the children of Lesotho and Botswana."
A source close to Harry said he was 'devastated the chair had been allowed to succeed with a hostile takeover', The Times reported.
CHARITY CONTROVERSY
The Charity Commission said chances were missed to settle differences at Sentebale.
The investigation rebuked "all parties" involved, but judged that Dr Chandauka could remain in place alongside the current board.
It launched a probe when Harry and Prince Seeiso stood down in support of trustees - who quit in a dispute with Dr Chandauka.
David Holdsworth, chief executive of the Charity Commission, said the public feud risked overshadowing Sentebale's achievements.
Dr Chandauka slammed the 'adverse media campaign' launched by those who resigned, which had 'caused incalculable damage' to the charity.
She said: "The unexpected adverse media campaign that was launched by those who resigned in March has caused incalculable damage and offers a glimpse of the unacceptable behaviours displayed in private.
"We are emerging not just grateful to have survived, but stronger: more focused, better governed, boldly ambitious and with our dignity intact.
"Despite the recent turbulence, we will always be inspired by the vision of our founders, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, who established Sentebale in memory of their precious mothers, Princess Diana and Queen 'Mamohato.
"To all who believe in our mission: please walk with us as Sentebale recovers, renews, and rises to meet the hopes and expectations of the next generation."
The bitter feud appeared to be triggered by the move to transfer the charity's fundraising operation to Africa.
Board of trustees chair Dr Chandauka said the 'toxicity' of Harry's brand since his move to live in the US had seen a drop in donors.
The decision had caused several key figures to quit the organisation.
The regulator, which cannot investigate individual allegations of bullying, found no evidence of systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir at the charity.
But it acknowledged 'the strong perception of ill treatment' felt by some involved.

The reasons for Prince William and Prince Harry 's bitter rift with Prince Andrew have been revealed on the Daily Mail's unmissable Palace Confidential show. The warring brothers are not talking to each other but are allegedly united in their disdain and distrust of the Duke of York, with both having X-rated nicknames for him. Esteemed royal biographer Andrew Lownie claims that Prince William will never forgive his uncle for being rude about the Princess of Wales and the damage he has caused to the reputation of the Royal Family. And despite the 'similarities' between 'spares' Prince Andrew and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex doesn't like him. 'Neither of them are very bright. Both of them are pretty entitled. Both of them are weak men, with strong, ambitious wives. There are interesting parallels there. But I think Harry still doesn't have much time for him', Mr Lownie said. He has given an extraordinary first broadcast interview about his book: 'Entitled, the Rise and Fall of the House of York' to Palace Confidential. The Mail has exclusively serialised his explosive new biography of the Duke of York. Mr Lownie has claimed that the Prince of Wales is far more cold towards Andrew than his father the King. 'He [William] sees him as a liability to the monarchy and Andrew has not always been very polite about Catherine. William is very protective of his wife', the author and journalist said. 'I think he would be appalled if he knew the full story, which I suspect he doesn't, of what Andrew's been up to'. He added: 'When William comes to power, Andrew will be toast'. 'Andrew ordered a stoking party to go and do some work in between watches in the middle of the night. He didn't go out and supervise it himself as he should have done. The chief stoker was so enraged by this that he actually went to Andrew's cabin and attacked him with with a heavy metal instrument. He added: 'The whole thing was covered up'. In 2022 the Queen stripped him of his HRH, military affiliations and royal patronages as the fallout of the Epstein scandal and a civil case brought against him by Virginia Giuffre, which he later settled for an estimated $16 million (£12million). Prince Andrew's tragedy? He's been spoiled by neglect
Has there ever been such a drive-by shooting of a living figure by their biographer? A new book about Prince Andrew is so stuffed with allegations about sex and acts of stupidity that, even before it is published later this month, many have been left wondering if its author has simply gone too far. Certainly, there are many breathtaking allegations contained in Andrew Lownie's biography of Prince Andrew – his appalling treatment of Buckingham Palace staff, yet more links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, how he was once given a bloody nose at a family gathering by Prince Harry, which Harry has strenuously denies. There are also several upsetting and intensely private revelations that appear to pass the legal threshold for a defamation lawsuit. The Duke of York might yet choose to hit back at his tormentors in the courts. Were he to do so, it isn't hard to see how such an episode might help him plot his long-desired return to public life. Could this book be the Duke's first step on that road to rehabilitation? Few feel any sympathy towards Andrew, who for years has been an isolated figure. Having been bovine to those around him, most friends have long since fled. With the death of Elizabeth II, he lost his main channel of support. His eldest brother, the King, tries to be supportive, but has to excuse him from all major state occasions. While we should resist the opportunity to rehabilitate Andrew, the most eye-popping allegations carried in extract from the biography, offer a glimpse of how Andrew ended up outcast in disgrace. Put simply, he is a man who has been spoiled by neglect. The prince once had everything you could desire: palaces, money, status and, so the biography says, over 1,000 women who have been prepared to go to bed with him. Throw in the fact that Andrew was always his mother's favourite, but that he lacks any of her legendary charm and intelligence, and you're left with a lethal cocktail of entitlement. It is fitting that the new biography is entitled Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York. The miracle of the Royal Family over the last century came about thanks to the late Elizabeth II, who would have been 100 next year. Despite being in a similar hallowed position to her son at her birth, she escaped the dark taint of entitlement. That was partly luck. She was 10 when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated, and she became heir to the throne. Until then, she was unlikely ever to become monarch, on the presumption Edward VIII would have children. And so, for those 10 precious years, for all her fame, she wasn't treated with the crippling flattery of deference. She had the close, loving attention of her parents, themselves relatively insulated from the royal limelight. As her nanny Marion Crawford, aka Crawfie, revealed in The Little Princesses (1950), little Princess Elizabeth was also blessed with a decent, responsible, hard-working character with an obsession for order. She would line up her shoes neatly every night. None of this for young Andrew. His mother's admirable sense of duty meant she was often absent from the nursery. His father, Prince Philip, was confident Andrew would get the same tough, no-nonsense education he'd had at Gordonstoun. But Philip, despite his royal blood as a Greek prince, had had none of the entitled upbringing that would doom his son. Exiled from his Greek birthplace, shuffled from pillar to post as a boy, cut off from his Nazi in-laws, Philip developed an extraordinarily tough, unself-indulgent approach to life. In his royal cocoon, Andrew remained insulated from criticism, protected by a nation's reverence for his mother and the monarchy in general. An entitled buffoon like Andrew could get away with his monstrous behaviour for years as long as it was shielded from the world. To be fair, he was undeniably heroic as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands – and, ridiculous as it seems now with the benefit of hindsight, the nation cheered when he married Sarah Ferguson in 1986. But those decades of spoiltness meant that, when the criticism started to trickle, and then pour, he was pathetically equipped to deal with it. More intelligent souls learn the great lessons of being privileged: never being rude, and being able to say sorry even when not meaning it. Not Andrew. Another disturbing allegation in the Lownie book is Andrew's response to a long-term royal employee who gets the Queen Mother's title slightly wrong – to which the Duke of York is reported to have responded: 'You still don't know the proper way to refer to my grandmother? You f***ing imbecile. Get out!' That strain of moron was never going to be able to handle Emily Maitlis's 2019 grilling on Newsnight. In fact, characteristically, he thought afterwards it had all gone very well. And so, as the book says, Andrew was a pathetic mouse to Jeffrey Epstein's rattlesnake when the two fatally flawed sex-obsessives first crossed paths. All the good fairies were at baby Andrew's side at his 1960 birth – but so too were the devil triplets: stupidity, entitlement and indulgence by neglect.
