How innovation is transforming Ireland's gas network

'Innovation is embedded across our operations, from governance to how we manage and maintain the network,' says head of Network Services John Memery. 'But innovation is driven not just by technology, it's about leadership, processes and people on the ground.'
Memery joined the organisation as an apprentice in 1982, shortly before the pipeline to bring natural gas from Cork to Dublin had been completed. Today, he leads a department of over 100 people across three core teams: service delivery (siteworks), operations support and emergency response.
During his 43 years with the organisation, he has witnessed first-hand how Gas Networks Ireland has embraced innovation, from replacing cast iron pipes with polyethylene to the repurposing of the network for the future onboarding of green hydrogen. He has also seen some very significant changes in the way customers use gas.
'One of biggest things we did was the replacement of cast iron to polyethylene pipes,' he says. 'That was hugely significant. We had a lot of problems with cast iron pipes. For example, if there was ground movement during cold weather, there was no flexibility in the pipes, so they could break causing gas leaks. We had been doing some piecemeal work replacing the cast iron pipes with polyethylene, but that was just a few kilometres a year. In 2005, we adopted a new strategy to renew the entire network, and we gave ourselves five years to do it. We completed it on time and by 2010 we had all the cast iron pipes in Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Dublin replaced.
'All of those callouts as a result of cast iron pipes ended,' he continues. 'We weren't digging up paths and roads repairing leaks any more and we now have one of the safest and most resilient gas networks in the whole of Europe. It also stands to our good for the integration of hydrogen on the network.' Gas Networks Ireland operates a structured, disciplined approach to innovation which is overseen by a cross-business Innovation Steering Group which includes external experts and dedicated teams focused on applying smart technologies to real-world challenges.
Supported by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), the organisation has established an innovation fund of €5.3 million comprising a strategic innovation fund (SIF) of €1.5 million with the remaining €3.8 million devoted to a network-based innovation fund (NBIF) aimed at furthering best practice in running gas networks.
'Through the SIF, Gas Networks Ireland is contributing €1.2 million to co-fund the €2.7 million Innovation Challenge in collaboration with Research Ireland, who are contributing the remaining €1.5 million,' says Memery. 'Research teams are being invited to develop breakthrough technologies in areas like renewable gas, energy system integration and artificial intelligence (AI) that will support Ireland's transition to a low-carbon energy future.'
The challenge has two overarching themes. The Energy System Integration Challenge seeks to support the development of solutions to accelerate the optimisation and integration of the energy system in Ireland's transition to a low carbon economy. The Biomethane and Biohydrogen Challenge aims to support the development of solutions which improve the efficiency, efficacy and commercial viability of biomethane and biohydrogen production, including extraction and utilisation of byproducts.
Innovation isn't just about big future ideas. It's about finding better ways to serve customers today and staying ready for tomorrow.
Successful teams from eligible research bodies in Ireland will be awarded up to €200,000 and will work through a series of phases to develop their idea. An overall prize award of €1 million will be available to the team that demonstrates the highest potential for transformative impact.
'Overall, 30 projects have received funding from the NBIF,' says Memery. 'Eight projects have been completed and 22 are ongoing.' One of those 22 projects deals with high volume gas escapes (HVGE), he explains. When a pipeline is damaged, more often than not by third-party activity, it can result in a high-volume gas escape (HVGE), leading to an uncontrolled release of gas. The project is developing potential new tools to increase the efficiency with which these can be fixed and reducing the associated risks.
The current method of sealing off a leak involves ground excavations and the application of special equipment to squeeze the pipe until the flow of gas stops. A new tool under investigation will involve placing a device into the damaged pipe which will expand due to the pressure of the gas and create a seal internally which will allow excavations to take place for a permanent repair.
'That would bring huge reputational, financial, environmental and safety benefits,' Memery adds.
Another project is looking at alternatives to chromatography to analyse the composition and quality of the gas on the network. This is important because of the introduction of biomethane at present and hydrogen in the near future. The introduction of biomethane will also alter the calorific value of the gas being delivered to customers. Another project is seeking to develop sensors which can be placed in pipes to measure the different types and mixes of gas present at any given time.
'It is really important to know the calorific value for billing,' Memery notes.
Satellite based monitoring of the gas transmission network is also being investigated. At present, monitoring the ground conditions above the network is done either by driving along the route in urban areas like Dublin or by flying over it using helicopters – both quite costly. The use of low earth orbit satellite imagery would both reduce costs and improve monitoring frequency, Memery notes.
Communication with deaf and hard of hearing customers is also under investigation. 'This project explores how technology can be used to enable immediate contact with hard of hearing customers through text messages and so on if there is a potential gas escape,' he says. 'Innovation isn't just about big future ideas. It's about finding better ways to serve customers today and staying ready for tomorrow.' While constant innovation and transformation are hallmarks of Gas Networks Ireland, the organisation is not afraid to look to its past as it seeks to progress into the future. That includes the reintroduction of its apprenticeship programme some 10 years ago.
'We hadn't had an apprenticeship programme since 1982/3 when I joined,' says Memery. 'It's great to have them again. They have brought new energy to the business and almost all of them have stayed with us. We ensure that they get broad experience of the business, and we put them on emergency call outs once they qualify one week a month. That means they are on call 24 hours a day and have to be on site within an hour of receiving the call from the customer. That's blue light standard and we achieved 99.7 per cent performance against that last year with an average response time of 28 minutes for the 14,000 publicly reported gas escapes. Our highest priority is safety, and we are very proud of our performance in that regard.'

Changes witnessed by Memery and his colleagues over the years have been immortalised on Dublin's Sir John Rogerson's Quay with the Gasworks sculpture by artist John Kindness. That heritage is very important to Memery who emphasises the critical role played by people in the continuing evolution and transformation of Ireland's gas network. 'Technology is essential but in the end it's people who respond, repair and reassure. We've modernised everything from our systems to our processes, but what matters most hasn't changed, showing up when people need us and doing the job right.'

Increased demand for gas in transport sector in H1

Gas demand in the first half of this year remained broadly consistent with the second half of 2024, new figures from Gas Networks Ireland show. Gas accounted for 39% of Ireland's electricity generation in the first six months of the year, compared to 33% from wind. The contribution from gas to power generation peaked at 90% and never dropped below 11% in the first half of the year, which Gas Networks Ireland said underscored its "critical" role in maintaining stability and reliability in the electricity system amid fluctuating renewable energy output. Overall gas demand fell by 9% in June compared to May and by 7% compared to June 2024, during what Met Éireann described as the fourth warmest June on record, albeit wetter and duller than average across much of the country. Gas generated 36% of the country's electricity in June, down from 40% in May and 42% in June last year. Its contribution peaked at 90% and never dropped below 14% in June, while wind accounted for 30% of electricity and ranged from less than 1% to a peak of 75%. Gas Networks Ireland said the energy system's reliance on gas during low renewable output was evident between June 9-14, when gas supplied 42% of electricity and wind supplied 23%. A similar pattern occurred from June 29-30, when gas generated 58% and never dipped below 31%, it added. Meanwhile, demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) grew by 26% on last year. Made by compressing natural gas down to less than 1% of its volume, CNG is a more environmentally friendly fuel than petrol or diesel and provides the Irish haulage industry with a cleaner alternative fuel option. Fuelling with CNG can reduce a heavy good vehicle's emissions by up to 22%, and with CNG suppliers now sourcing gas via renewable sources, BioCNG can turn a HGV into a carbon neutral vehicle, providing the Irish haulage industry with a clean alternative fuel option. But demand for gas across most sectors saw annual declines in June, with reductions in the residential (-21%), leisure/sports arenas (-17%) and retail (-14%) sectors, due to the warm weather which reduced heating needs. Gas Networks Ireland's Director of Strategy and Regulation Edwina Nyhan said that June's data again illustrates how gas consistently supports electricity generation during periods of low wind, helping to keep the system secure and balanced. "The steady growth in demand for CNG, including a 26 per cent increase in June year on year, reflects continued momentum in decarbonising the transport sector. This progress is further supported by recent developments such as the opening of a new public CNG station in Dublin and the launch of the GRAZE vehicle grant scheme, which is already generating strong interest from fleet operators," Ms Nyhan said. "At the same time, we are making important strides in supporting the build out of the biomethane industry, including the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with CycleØ to help connect new biomethane production sites to the gas network," she added.

Caitríona Redmond: Why is it so hard to change service providers in Ireland?

Summer is a great time to examine our utility bills and service providers. We all want to save money, and while the bills are low, this is our opportunity. Thanks to the advent of rules and regulations around switching, moving from one utility service to another is far easier than before. Signing up to the new utility provider is easy but breaking up with the old one can be hard to do. If you're not outside of your contract's minimum term (check your original contract signed when joining your service provider), an early exit fee may apply. The amount depends on your original contract and is per utility account. If you have signed up for a dual-fuel account, both natural gas and electricity, then there will be separate exit fees applied. This will range from €50 to €100 per account, so if you are moving to save money before the end of your contract, factor in the exit fee. Then there's the final meter reading, which can catch an awful lot of people out. While your account on leaving may be in credit, once the final meter reading has been taken, you can end up with an unexpected, nasty bill. This can be exacerbated by a series of estimated bills. It's always good policy to submit regular meter readings to your utility provider, whether or not you intend to leave. If you find it difficult to log into your account and submit those meters readings with your service provider, you can always log a reading directly with Gas Networks Ireland and ESB Networks on their respective websites. When switching providers, there's a 14-day cooling-off period and any perks or benefits you may have signed up to can be held in this time. Also, bear in mind that if you signed up for a cashback offer, but finish your contract early, you will have to pay back the cashback in full. It's notoriously difficult to say goodbye to an Irish person on the phone, the number of goodbyes can be numerous. Saying goodbye to a telephone or broadband service can require quite a few steps as well. Mobile phone contracts tend to last for 12 to 24 months, and early termination of the contract can result in customers paying the full cost of the remaining months. If you have a contract which includes the cost of your mobile phone, you may have to return it. Those terms and conditions and/or contracts can really catch you out. Most phone companies require at least 30 days notice, but it also depends on the date that your bills is due. I recently got caught out by this and had to give my mobile phone provider 45 days notice, not 30. In general, while you can ring your service provider to cancel, I always recommend putting a cancellation in writing and preferably by post. It's also good practice to request a breakdown of your charges before you leave so that you don't get any unexpected surprises. Sign-up offers that favour new customers but penalise existing customers feel inherently unfair. We'd prefer to be on the most beneficial rate at all times, but that's not sustainable for providers. Technically, Irish consumers are well protected in Ireland when it comes to contracts. If you've signed up for a service remotely — online, over the phone, or even through a sales rep on your doorstep — you're covered by a 14-day cooling-off period. During this time, you can cancel without explanation or charge. Bear in mind you can't move to another new provider during this period, though, as I hear some consumers have been caught out by this rule. All of that said, I've received a considerable number of messages from dissatisfied customers of varying utility and service providers in Ireland. From TV to mobile phone to broadband, it seems that many service providers don't make it as easy as it should be. Take the example of our reader Jenny from Meath, who recently tried to change her TV service. Jenny contacted her existing company by ringing them to ask them to get a better offer. As their offer was not good enough, she turned it down. Within minutes, they sent her an e-mail confirming her new offer and, unbeknownst to her, renewed her contract for another year. This, despite her clearly saying that she wanted to cancel, and she was not agreeing to the new offer. Unfortunately, Jenny's experience is indicative of many other consumers in Ireland, and it's a pity that signing off is not as simple as signing up. The ensuing mess took her more than three weeks to resolve, with many phone calls and emails, and she eventually managed to deal with somebody via WhatsApp chat. She feels very let down by her old provider, especially after being with them for over 12 years. Next week, I'll have an update on a Cork consumer who can't get out of her broadband contract because she has been unable to contact the service provider. Redmond Recommends Whether you use a paper or digital diary, note the date you signed up to a contract and set yourself a reminder for 12 months' time, or whenever your contract expires. I set an alert to receive an email when a contract is up for review. I paste all the information I need into the reminder, saving myself the effort of digging around for it. Remember if you are out of contract with your gas or electricity provider you will be paying the standard rate. You could be paying as much as 30% more on your electricity or your gas on standard rates. Locking yourself into a contract with your utility provider to save a tidy pot of money.
