Judiciary and the police urged to protect identities of sexual assault victims
Judges and police officers should protect the identities of sexual assault victims and provide them with the support they need, said Madras High Court Judge M. Dhandapani in Coimbatore city on Saturday.
Speaking at an awareness programme on gender sensitisation and the elimination of violence against women, organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA), Coimbatore, Justice Dhandapani said the judiciary and law enforcement must ensure the confidentiality of victims, calling it a social responsibility. He said leaking of victims' identities often makes their future uncertain.
Only about 10% of women-related problems reach the courts in India, as fear of stigma and concerns over their daughters' future discourage many parents from reporting the cases.
Highlighting gaps in justice delivery, he said that only well-established factories, industries, and companies have internal complaints committees under the Vishaka guidelines, leaving domestic workers and others without proper mechanisms. It is the duty of courts and police to ensure that every victim receives justice.
The speakers discussed at the event cyber crimes against women under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (PoSH Act), types of workplace harassment and grievance mechanisms, challenges faced by junior advocates and interns, and the duties of Bar Associations under the Act. They also spoke on the role of men and women in creating a healthy work environment.
An awareness short film produced by the Coimbatore district court staff was released.

Pune: Five minors detained on charges of attempt to murder inmate
Five minors assaulted a 17-year-old boy and attempted to strangulate him with a towel at barrack number 2 of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Industrial Training Centre in Yerawada at around 9.15am on June 10. Santosh Kisan Kumbhar, 49, of Charholi Phata lodged a complaint at the Yerawada Police Station. According to the police, minors involved in criminal offences are housed at the centre. The conflict began when the victim refused to clean bathroom. His defiance led to an argument with other inmates and the physical assault. A security guard at the facility noticed the attack and saved the juvenile. 17-year-old's miscarriage leads to rape case, live-in partner held
Nagpur: A 17-year-old complaining bouts of abdominal pain was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Monday. She was discharged the same evening only to return late evening after complaining the same excruciating pain. Two days later, the GMCH staff was rattled after the teen suffered a miscarriage and evidently it turned out to be case of rape. The incident got the GMCH staff into action and alerted the cops leading to the arrest of 20-year-old labourer Deepak Uikey on Wednesday. The incident once against stoked the debate about the contentious issue of consent and legal accountability in live-in relationships. Police report said the teen was into a lived-in partnership with Uikey from 2023. The medical staff, following protocol, found her age from her Aadhaar card, which confirmed that she was a minor. The matter turned sensitive as the teen got impregnated while being a minor. The duo, both residents of a nearby neighbourhood, reportedly had a consensual relationship. Hudkeshwar police took Uikey into custody on Wednesday following a complaint lodged by the survivor's family. Umesh Pal murder case: NBW against Guddu Muslim, two other accused
A special court established to try cases related to the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, on Thursday issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against Guddu Muslim, Arman and Sabir, the accused in the 2023 murder of advocate Umesh Pal and his two police guards, who are absconding, DCP (city), Prayagraj, Abhishek Bharti. A reward of ₹5 lakh each has also been announced on these three criminals. Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case, was shot dead outside his residence in Prayagraj's Sulem Sarai area on February 24, 2023. The police had filed a chargesheet against the three main accused of Atiq Ahmed's gang, Guddu Muslim, Arman and Sabir earlier. Despite extensive search operations in 14 states by the police and arrest warrants issued in seven states, they have remained out of police reach so far. All three accused are active members of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's IS-227 gang. As per the police, 15 people have been charged in this case so far. Of them, 12 accused, including Atiq Ahmed's sons Umar and Ali, are in jail. Apart from Guddu Muslim, Arman and Sabir, Atiq Ahmed's wife Shaista Parveen and his brother Ashraf's wife Zainab Fatima and sister Ayesha Noori are also absconding. A case was registered in the Dhoomanganj police station in the Umesh Pal murder case. The Airport police station is investigating the case.
