Fans Celebrate Surprise Lego Pokémon Tease: 'Free From Mega Bloks Hell'

Yahoo18-03-2025

Lego has teased its latest video game mashup and this time it's with Pokémon. There's no release date beyond '2026,' no pricing info or other details at the moment, and it doesn't really matter because whatever this is will probably sell out while it's still in the pre-order phase. Are you ready to give some rando on eBay $200 for a Lego Pikachu come Christmas of next year?
A page on the Lego website simply states, 'Lego Pokémon Coming Soon,' and 'Electrify your imagination in 2026 and get ready to build something we've never built with Lego bricks before!' The timing is appropriate given that next year marks the 30th anniversary of the video game franchise. Here's the short teaser video shared by The Pokémon company:
While a book-sized Pikachu model that's roughly 1,000 pieces and $100 would make the most sense for something like this, I'd love to see Lego go all out and give the iconic electric mouse the 7,500 brick, $850 Millennium Falcon treatment. It's what Ash Ketchum would have wanted.
Where does this leave The Pokémon Company's existing plastic brick partners like Mega Bloks? Seemingly in the dust, and some fans couldn't be more excited. They greeted the news of the Lego Pokémon collaboration by metaphorically dancing on the Mattel competitor's grave:
Mega Bloks has released a bunch of Pokémon sets and they are...fine? They look nice enough and aren't too overpriced, though buying any Mega Blok product always gives extreme 'store brand Fruit Loops' vibes. And existing Lego fans with extensive collections will want sets in which every little circle on each little piece has that world-famous logo emblazoned on it.
What's potentially bad for Mega Bloks could be great news for scalpers who will now have genuine toy world Rolexes to hawk instead of knockoffs, but we still won't know for some time how that all shakes out. Even if we get more information on the Lego Pokémon sets in 2025, they aren't set to launch until next year. The company needs to make room for the other big, branded mashups on its release calendar, including a Lego Game Boy coming this October. In the meantime, a Lego Mario Kart model is shipping in May.

Originally announced as "Project Bloom," Game Freak's upcoming action-adventure game made a formal appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase as Beast of Reincarnation. The studio describes the game as a "one-person, one-dog" RPG and it's supposed to be coming out in 2026. Based on the trailer, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic Japan that's returned to nature due to some kind of beast-born blight. As the main character "Emma the Sealer," you'll travel through the wilderness, engaging in "demanding, technical combat" alongside your dog Koo, all in the hopes of "saving humanity" from the sickness that's plaguing the land. Game Freak is best known for its work on the Pokémon games, but the developer has made an eclectic collection of other projects between mainline entries, including Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! and more recently, Pandoland . "Project Bloom" was originally supposed to be published by Take-Two's Private Division label, but when the label was sold in 2024, Game Freak's game was taken up by a new publisher called Fictions. Beast of Reincarnation is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2026. It'll also be available through Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Scientists Figured Out the Personality Traits of Influencers, and It Could Explain a Lot

More and more young people are gunning to become influencers — but certain personality types appear more likely to pursue it as a career than others, which could explain a lot about the chaotic and outrageous industry. It's a worthwhile line of inquiry. Back in 2019, a Lego-sponsored survey found that among 3,000 kids in the US, UK, and China, a full third said they wanted to be influencers, while only 11 percent indicated an interest in becoming an astronaut. What does that immensely powerful trend mean for society? In a new study published in the journal Telematics and Informatics, researchers from Poland's University of Wrocław and Oxford found that young people who are extraverted, self-involved, and — quelle surprise — dramatic were more likely to aspire to being an influencer than their more introverted and calmer counterparts. After recruiting nearly 800 participants aged 16 and 17 — roughly half of whom were Polish, with the other half based in the United Kingdom — the researchers posed a battery of questions to their teen subjects about their career goals and their dream jobs. The participants were also given questionnaires that measured how strongly they exhibit the "Big Five" personality traits — openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism — as well as how histrionic, or dramatic, they are. As the researchers found, those with heightened extraversion, narcissism, and histrionics — a tendency to be dramatic and expressive about it, basically — were more likely to be interested in the influencer life. Those traits correlate to a desire to be seen and validated by others in much the same way as with theater kids — suggesting, perhaps, that the student thespians of today may be the influencers of tomorrow. Though there's been some research into how audiences perceive the personalities of content creators, this study appears to be the first that looks into the traits the drive people to become influencers — or wannabe influencer, at least, since the career is anything but a slam dunk for most who attempt it.
